FOR THE LEADERS

“Bene Merito” HONORARY DISTNICTIONS:
The “Bene merito” honorary distinction is conferred upon the citizens of the Republic of Poland and
foreign nationals in recognition of their merits in promoting Poland abroad.
Upon request of the Hosts of the Polish Voyage for the Heart and Polish cardiologists and cardiac
surgeons, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski decided to honor with “Bene merito” distinction
the following leaders of the Polen Project:
PROF. JAN WALTER STOOP - eminent pediatrician and immunologist, director of the Queen Wilhelmina
Children's Hospital in Utrecht between the years 1973-1992 and co-initiator and implementer of the project
POLEN PROJECT.
For his leadership and oversight of the implementation of the POLEN PROJECT between the years 19831990. With sincere gratitude from the Polish society for performing voluntarily over 400 complex congenital
heart defect operations and training Polish medical and nursing staff at the Queen Wilhelmina Children's
Hospital in Utrecht.
PROF. FRANCOIS HITCHCOCK - prominent pediatric cardiac surgeon, mentor to many Polish cardiac
surgeons and leader of the operative team performing open heart surgery on Polish children with
congenital heart defects at the Queen Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht.
For his personal commitment and participation as the leader of the operative team performing voluntarily
over 400 open heart surgeries on Polish children with complex congenital heart defects and training many
Polish cardiac surgeons.
DR. MARIANNE KARELSE-NIJSEN - outstanding specialist in intensive care and anesthesia for his
meticulous post-operative care in Polish children treated surgically at the Queen Wilhelmina Children's
Hospital in Utrecht.
For her personal participation in the development and growth of the POLEN PROJECT and dedication to
training Polish specialist in intensive care and anesthesiology.

For his leadership in initiating and developing the Poolse Hartpatientjes naar Nederland project in Utrecht in
years 1983-1990.
WILHELMINA KINDERZIEKENHUIS AND UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER UTRECHT
For initiating and developing between the years 1983-1990 the POLEN PROJECT, through which more than
400 Polish children with complex congenital heart defects were voluntarily operated on at the Queen
Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht. For establishing the training program, which had significantly
contributed to the development of Polish modern cardiology and cardiac surgery - thanks to which today
Poland can successfully help and treat children and adults from other countries.
TERRE DES HOMMES NETHERLAND
For the leadership and comprehensive assistance in the development of modern pediatric cardiology and
pediatric cardiac surgery in Poland between the years 1983-1990 through the POLEN PROJECT - through
which more than 400 Polish children with heart defects were voluntarily operated on at the Queen
Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht.
Dla Ambasady Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej w Królestwie Niderlandów
z podziękowaniem za promocję Polski i zaangażowanie w realizację POLEN PROJECT - programu uratowania
ponad 400 polskich dzieci z wrodzonymi wadami serca w Szpitalu Uniwersyteckim im. Królowej Wilhelminy
w Utrechcie w latach 1983-1990.
Dla Instytutu Kardiologii w Warszawie
z podziękowaniem za wiodącą w Polsce rolę w realizacji POLEN PROJECT - programu operowania ponad 400
polskich dzieci z wrodzonymi wadami serca w Szpitalu Uniwersyteckim im. Królowej Wilhelminy w Utrechcie
w latach 1983-1990.
Dla Instytutu „Pomnik - Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka” w Warszawie
z podziękowaniem za wielką rolę w realizacji POLEN PROJECT - programu operowania ponad 400 polskich
dzieci z wrodzonymi wadami serca w Szpitalu Uniwersyteckim im. Królowej Wilhelminy w Utrechcie w latach
1983-1990.
Dla Śląskiego Centrum Chorób Serca w Zabrzu
z podziękowaniem za opiekę nad polskimi dziećmi z wrodzonymi wadami serca leczonymi w ramach POLEN
PROJECT w Szpitalu Uniwersyteckim im. Królowej Wilhelminy w Utrechcie w latach 1983-1990.
Twórca nagród: Tadeusz Bystrzak (ur. 1954 w Słupsku ) - absolwent krakowskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych, wszechstronnie
uzdolniony artysta, zajmujący się wieloma dziedzinami sztuki, między innymi projektowaniem wnętrz i sztuki użytkowej,
designem, malarstwem iluzjonistycznym, rzeźbą (szkło, murale).
