Why study the history of chemistry? The three basic stages in the development of chemistry - before alchemical
period (crafts about chemical), alchemy, modern chemistry. Mutual relations between pure and applied science
during these periods. The search for the components of the universe (matter), or the need for theory and its
influence on the development of chemistry at the appropriate stages. Methodology of chemistry in its historical
development. The legacy of the period before the alchemical period. The legacy of alchemy (practical and
speculative). Social determinants of the development of chemistry. Factors causing transition between the
development of chemistry. Historical development of chemical symbolism. Historical development of chemical
equipment. The role of the requirement to organize knowledge in the development of chemistry. Scientific
societies and their influence on the development of science, including chemistry. Key facts (milestones) in the
development of chemistry. Great chemists. Disciplines within the broad chemical sciences, including technology
and chemical engineering. The positives and negatives of the development of chemistry. Examples of the
negative impact of chemistry on society (wrong evaluation criteria of progress). Social responsibility of chemist
