COURSE DESCRIPTION (OPIS KURSÓW) The aim of the courses: The PG 1-4 courses develop grammar accuracy at an advanced level of language proficiency. LEARNING OUTCOMES (EFEKTY KSZTAŁCENIA) In order to pass the Practical Grammar courses, students: as regards knowledge in Practical Grammar 1 course: understand grammatical rules governing the Verbal Group in English, with special emphasis on linguistic constructions typical of English and either absent or archaic in other languages, such as the subjunctive mode, the concept of Tense and Aspect, etc.; recognize characteristic linguistic features of the formal/ academic vs. informal variety of English; as regards knowledge in Practical Grammar 2 course: identify, analyze and use correct modal verbs in all types of structures; identify and describe the basic features of English nouns; recognize and analyze the features of the noun phrase (articles, modifiers, word order); analyze the subject-verb agreement within sentences; use the right word order of in the noun phrase; produce correct adjective patterns; identify the correct order in groups of adjectives; identify the correct position of adverbs in the sentence; identify and use correct pronouns in all types of structures; as regards knowledge in the Practical Grammar 3 course: understand grammatical rules governing multiclausal structures in English, with special emphasis on linguistic constructions typical of English and either absent or archaic in Polish, such as adjectival and adverbial dependent clauses, the concept of backshift and anteriority, and non-finite verbal complementation; understand the mechanism of Polish syntactic interference in English texts composed by Polish students of English*; as regards knowledge in the Practical Grammar 4 course: understand the principles governing the organization of texts in English, with special emphasis on linguistic constructions typical of English; recognize characteristic linguistic features of the formal/academic vs. informal variety of English; understand the mechanism of Polish syntactic interference in English texts composed by Polish students of English*; as regards skills in Practical Grammar 1 – 4 courses: know how to employ particular grammar rules to achieve the intended result; know how to organize a written message in a cohesive and coherent way, indicative of a good command of English; are able to identify structural units at the basic level of linguistic analysis (including an ability to recognize parts of speech, identify phrases, and classify sentences) in authentic samples of English, leading to a better comprehension of the nature of a given English text from the vantage point of both the user and the learner of the language; are able to employ the theoretical knowledge in practice; are able to identify and eliminate Polish calques in English structures*; are able to employ the criteria of self-observation, and self-evaluation; Obligatory resources: Obowiązkowa literatura: Foley, M. & D.
