Thank you. Page Three Fr. Mariusz along with the altar servers has fashioned Christmas Candles that have a picture of our Church on it. They are very nice and could be used as a centerpiece for your “table”. You can purchase these candles for $10 after all the Sunday masses and in the rectory during the week. The funds will be used to purchase new albs for the altar servers. A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Page Four Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24, 2006 Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish From the Pastor: Today is the last day of Advent, a time of preparation for Christmas and the coming of the Christ Child, a prelude to the event we must all prepare for at the end of time. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped Sr. Hiacynta clean the church and decorate for Christmas. May the baby Jesus bless all of you who have helped in so many ways to make our church and the Christmas celebration be so much more beautiful. Let the external preparation be an inspiration for the internal parts of our lives, the real source of our being, the Mystery of the Incarnation. Please make the Christmas celebration different than what we see in commercial avenues, everything is over, the day after. Rather let it be for us, as Christians, carried through fully until January 8th, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In Polish tradition it is extended until February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Let this Christmas spirit stay with us, along with the beautiful atmosphere of the decorations as long as possible. With that spirit present in us and the Liturgy of the Church and keeping the traditions of Christmas we can show everyone the true meaning of Christmas and how to experience the real living Christ. Merry Christmas to all of You! Fr. Jason Torba Bulletin reminder: All notices for the January 7th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 AM on Thursday, December 28th. You may bring your bulletin notices to the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin”; you may fax them to 622-5903; or you may e-mail them to: [email protected]. John(Baptist) Gideon Isaac Samuel Shem Page Eight Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24, 2006 Fourth Sunday of Advent “BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR WOMB” Luke’s infancy narratives are carefully written to reveal that the child Jesus who was born in Bethlehem is truly the Son of God, the longawaited Messiah of the Jews, and the Savior of all people. In today’s Gospel Elizabeth proclaims the good news to Mary, and to us, that Mary’s child is divine. She says, “Blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:43). As Luke tells it, John the Baptist recognized Jesus before either of them had been born, and announced Jesus’ identity as the anointed Son of God through Elizabeth’s words. The first and second readings for this Sunday highlight Jesus’ identity as Savior of all people. In Micah we hear that “his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth” and in Hebrews we are reminded that his death was an offering “for all.” Today’s scriptures should reveal to us the full significance of the Incarnation, the coming of God in the form of a humble human infant. REAL PRESENCE We may never fully grasp God’s real presence in the human form of the infant Jesus. Just so, we may never fully grasp the real presence of God in the humble form of the Eucharist. The one who came down from heaven and became human at Christmas comes down from heaven at every Eucharist and offers us his body and blood so that all might be consecrated—that is, share in his divine life. As we sing the Lamb of God litany and receive Communion this week, may we welcome the Son of God and Savior of all people, the Messiah and Lamb of God. May we recognize him not only in the infant Jesus and in the Eucharist, but in all of our sisters and brothers. In every Eucharist the Incarnation continues; God takes on human form and dwells among us. Today’s Readings: Micah 5:1–4a; Psalm 80:2–3, 15–16, 18–19; Hebrews 10:5–10; Luke 1:39–45 Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. The Nativity of the Lord: Christmas GOD’S ACTION Why do we celebrate Christmas with such rejoicing? Fun as they are, it’s not the gifts, the parties, the decorations, the carols and songs. What we really celebrate is the birth of our Savior, the one who came as a tiny child two thousand years ago, and will come again at the end of time to deliver us from death and sin forever. Two actions are being celebrated today: God’s and our own. In the gift of Christ Jesus, we recognize the fulfillment of the promise of God. God’s faithfulness fulfills humankind’s hopes through the centuries and down to our own day. Peace is promised to us, and all our hope rests in this promise. This peace is not the peace of the world, the mere absence of war and conflict, but the deep peace that comes with the recognition that Emmanuel, God-with-us, dwells within us waiting to be discovered. This discovery takes place gradually for some, quickly for others, as we are capable. But it is gentle and full of grace for those who believe and hope, trusting in God’s promise. OUR RESPONSE The second action of this day is our response to God’s saving deed: our joy and gratitude. We are so weary and weighed down by the troubles in our world, in our country, in our individual lives. The coming of the Lord at the end of time is the realization of our salvation, and cause for great rejoicing for those who believe. The grace of God dwells within us, waiting to be discovered and embraced by us. Christ our King rules in our hearts, but we must quiet our souls and minds from all the noise and distractions of this season and try to hear him. Christ promises to reveal himself to those who ask, and his promises are true. We rejoice and give thanks today for God’s generous and hopeful gifts, both in the past and in the time to come. Niech sam Nowonarodzony Chrystus obdarzy licznymi łaskami Was wszystkich, którzy poprzez poświęcenie swojego czasu przyczyniliście się do upiększenia celebracji tych świąt w naszym Kościele. Poprzez uczestniczenie w liturgii Kościoła w tym okresie i zachowanie pięknych bożonarodzeniowych tradycji i zwyczajów pokażemy innym prawdziwą istotę przeżywania tych świąt - żywą obecność Chrystusa wśród nas. Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia! ks. Zdzisław Torba Page Ten Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24, 2006 Noworoczne życzenia 9:30 AM 7:00 PM Czego mamy wam życzyć w tym Nowym Roku? Reynolds ([email protected]) Call it an unwelcome manifestation of the season driven by the Hallmarks of the world if you want to, but don’t come complaining to me. I like Christmas cards. I like sending them and I like receiving them. And even if the cards are pre-printed and computer addressed, they are still a tangible connection with those we care about, literally touched by both the sender and the receiver. Yes, I like Christmas cards just fine, thank you, and I’ve got a hunch that lots of other people do, too. Another Christmas communication is a little more controversial, however, with people seeming to either love it or hate it: the Christmas letter. I admit that I had my doubts about it myself until just a few years ago. I found some letters to be pompous and, though personal, cold. Many contained way more information than I needed to know. Gall bladders. Colonoscopies. That sort of thing. And some--the ones that recalled every detail of life in the fast lane--were downright exhausting. But my wife has always defended them, telling me that they are a nice way to keep up with the lives of those we just don’t get to see or visit with very often. With time, I came to see her point, so when she told me a few years back that she wanted to draft our own Christmas letter to send out with our Christmas cards, I told her to have at it. And guess what? Now I’m a fan of Christmas letters, too-receiving them and sending--and for the same reason Gail cites. A recent Foxtrot cartoon series in the Chicago Tribune showed Mrs. Fox at her PC composing the family Christmas letter, and over the course of the week the entire family came to her with input. Made me wonder if the strip’s author had been hanging out at my place not long ago when Gail was composing our own Christmas text. Looking for something letter-worthy herself, she called out to the entire family that night: “You guys have any requests regarding what I should say about you in the Christmas letter?” Only Sarah, our college-age daughter replied: “That I’m awesome!” I can hear Sarah’s comment ringing in today’s Scripture passages. Consider Micah: “Thus says the Lord: ‘You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah--too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel…’ ” If Bethlehem-Ephrathah had written the first Christmas letter millenniums ago, it could have called itself awesome, too. Today’s letter to the Hebrews (“we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”) smacks of awesome-ness, too. And according to Elizabeth in the Gospel: “…how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” The mother of our Lord comes to all of us this day, and tomorrow, the Child himself is in our midst. My daughter is awesome, true, but on an infinitely higher level, each of us is as well, and Jesus is the reason why. Speaking of letter-worthy… Merry Christmas.
