The fire of his love
“Would You not have us call down fire?” —Luke 9:54
J
ames and John asked
Jesus: “ ‘Lord, would
You not have us call
down fire from heaven
to destroy them?’ [Jesus]
turned toward them only
to reprimand them” (Lk
9:54-55). On another occasion, Jesus proclaimed:
“I have come to light a
fire on the earth. How I
wish the blaze were ignited!” (Lk 12:49) Sometimes Jesus wants to call
down fire; at other times,
He doesn’t.
Elijah was the world
champion in calling down
fire from heaven (see 1
Kgs 18:38; 2 Kgs 1:10,
12; Sir 48:3). However,
on at least one occasion
in Elijah’s life, “the Lord
was not in the fire” (1 Kgs
19:12). Why is the Lord in
some fire and not in others?
The Lord is not usually
in the fire of destruction
but in the fire of discipleship. Elijah’s astounding
power to call down fire
surrounded the greatest
ministry of his life, the
calling of Elisha to be
his disciple (see 1 Kgs
19:16ff). After Jesus rebuked John and James
for wanting to call down
fire on the Samaritans, Jesus focused on the call to
discipleship (Lk 9:57-62).
This culminated in the
first Christian Pentecost.
“Tongues as of fire appeared, which parted and
came to rest on” 120 disciples (Acts 2:3). This led
to three thousand people
being baptized into discipleship (Acts 2:41).
The Lord wants us to
call down fire if we call
forth disciples. “Light
a fire on the earth” (Lk
12:49) to “make disciples
of all the nations” (Mt
28:19).

Czas urlopów
i wakacje
W drodze z Jezusem
Zbliżają się wakacje.
Kiedy wielu z nas już
myśli o zasłużonym
odpoczynku, my czytamy fragment Ewangelii
o podroży Jezusa do
Jerozolimy. Nie jest to
zwykła wędrówka do
Świętego Miasta ani
tradycyjna pielgrzymka z
racji święta Paschy, lecz
prawdziwy punkt zwroty
w całej historii zbawienia. Ewangelista używa
mocnych słów, podobnych do proklamacji
publicznej działalności
Jezusa
w
rodzinnym Nazarecie: „Gdy
dopełniły się dni Jego
wzięcia z tego świata,
postanowił udać się do
Jeruzalem”. „Odczuwamy jakiś lęk – wyznaje
kard. Martini – gdy przychodzi nam czytać
drugą część Ewangelii
Łukasza. Są to słowa,
które odbierają dech; to
ostrze ewangelicznego
diamentu, który może
zranić”. Wędrówka do
Świętego Miasta rozpoczyna się od konfrontacji
z wrogo usposobionymi Samarytanami. Nie
przyjęto pielgrzymów
ze względów ideologicznych. Wrogość na tle
religijnym,
fanatyzm,
to i dzisiaj częste powody do nienawiści, terroryzmu i zabijania
wielu niewinnych lud-
zi. Czasem po prostu
zwykłych przechodniów,
turystów, pielgrzymów
zdążających do miejsc świętych. To budzi
gniew, oburzenie, chęć
zemsty – podobne do
reakcji „synów Gromu”
(Jana i Jakuba), którzy
domagają się powtórzenia cudu z czasów
proroka Eliasza, by
spadł „ogień z nieba” i
ukarał winnych (2 Krl
1, 10.14). Jezus zdecydowanie odrzuca zasadę
„oko za oko”, gromi
swoich uczniów i poleca
im iść dalej. Każe szukać
nowych dróg, nowych
ludzi, gotowych pójść
śladami Księcia Pokoju.
Naśladować Chrystusa
oznacza bowiem pójść
za Nim najpierw drogą
krzyża, drogą wyrzeczenia,
posłuszeństwa,
uniżenia, by w końcu
móc
doświadczyć
światła
zmartwychwstania i pełnej radości.
Ewangelista wybiera trzy
znamienne wypowiedzi
Jezusa, które ukazują
trzy różne odpowiedzi
wezwanych do „pójścia
za Nim”. Pierwszy z
kandydatów przypomina
postawę Piotra (Łk 22,
23 i J 13, 36n), którego
Jezus „sprowadza na
ziemię”. Naśladowanie
to nie tyle głoszenie doktryny, co przede wszyst-
kim udział w odrzuceniu
i konaniu Mistrza. W
drugiej scenie Jezusowy
nakaz „pójdź za Mną”
(Łk 5, 27; 8; 9, 23n)
wyraża pragnienie zdecydowanej i heroicznej
postawy naśladowców
i głosicieli królestwa Bożego. „Zostaw
umarłym grzebanie ich
umarłych…”. Prawdziwy uczeń nie zadowala
się opłakiwaniem swych zmarłych, lecz
dąży do nowego życia,
idąc śladem Mistrza.
Wreszcie
postawa
trzeciego kandydata przypomina
powołanie
Elizeusza (1 Krl 19, 19n).
Jezus jednak jest bardziej
wymagający niż prorok
Eliasz, bowiem bliskość
„królestwa” nie pozwala
na ociąganie! Wszelki
kompromis ze światem,
szelka próba ułożenia
sobie życia po swojemu
grozi wykluczeniem z
królestwa Bożego. Podczas wakacji będziemy
zapewne niejednokrotnie
wezwani do wyznania
swojej wiary, do przyznania się do swojego
Pana, Jezusa Chrystusa.
Bycie chrześcijaninem
nie może zamknąć się w
jakiejś ukrytej deklaracji,
ale musi wyrażać się w
codziennym życiu i publicznym
wyznawaniu
wiary (osobista modlit-

wa, niedzielna Eucharystia, miłość bliźniego…).
Chrześcijaństwo
jest
drogą
z
Jezusem,
stąpaniem po śladach
Mistrza z Nazaretu.
Nie jest to droga prosta
i łatwa. Trzeba jednak
zaufać Temu, który
powiedział: Weźcie moje
jarzmo na siebie i uczcie
się ode Mnie, bo jestem
cichy i pokorny sercem,
a znajdziecie ukojenie
dla dusz waszych. Albowiem jarzmo moje jest
słodkie, a moje brzemię
lekkie” (Mt 11, 29n).
Każdy z nas z radością
przeżywa ten czas wakacyjno – urlopowy. By
zregenerować
nasze
nadszarpnięte
siły
całorocznym wysiłkiem.
Dzieci w szkole, rodzice
w pracy. Przeżywajmy
ten czas w radości z
najbliższymi, będąc w miejscach, które pomogą nam
znów „naładować baterie”
na kolejny rok naszych
zajęć i obowiązków. Niech
ten czas relaksu nie będzie
spędzany pogańsko przy
libacjach alkoholowych i
bez Boga. Pamiętajmy, że
jesteśmy chrześcijanami,
ludźmi wiary i to nas
do czegoś zobowiązuje.
Niech przykład codziennej modlitwy, niedzielnej Mszy św., miłość
bliźniego, będzie wzorem,
także dla naszych dzieci i
najbliższej rodziny, bo od
modlitwy i sakramentów
świętych nie ma wakacji!!!
Niech Boża opatrzność
zawsze i wszędzie nam
towarzyszy i czuwa nad
nami. I z pewnością tak
będzie jeśli my również
o tym Bogu będziemy
pamiętać. Życzę Wam
wszystkim miłych, radosnych, pełnych słońca i
relaksu wakacji i urlopów.

weekend as they take
part in their annual pilgrimage to Iona.

cradle of Christianity in
Scotland - from where St
Columba, Patron of Dunkeld, spread the Gospel
message.
