Catholic Talk
LENT (from the Germanic word for Spring) is a period of 40
days (excluding Sundays) to prepare for Easter. It recalls Jesus’
40 days of solitude in the desert and provides a time to refocus
on our relationship with God and others through prayer, fasting
and doing good deeds.
FASTING as explained by the US bishops means partaking of
only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal the
main meal. Catholics in good health between the ages of 18 and
59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
ABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat, but not of eggs, milk
products or condiments made of animal fat. All Catholics 14
years old and older must abstain from eating meat on Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.
EASTER DUTY is the serious obligation binding Roman
Catholics to receive the eucharist sometime during the Easter
season (in the US, this means from the first Sunday of Lent to
and including Trinity Sunday—10 days after the Ascension).

A Thought, Or Two…
Year of Faith – I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth
We continue meditations upon the First Article of the Creed: “I believe in God the Father
almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.” Among “of all that is
seen” also man was created, and today let us look at man’s original state in paradise, especially
on his fall: the original sin, but, after all “You did not allow death to rule over him.”
Dramatic situation of the world, in which it has found itself after the fall of our first parents, “…
while the whole world is under the evil one” (1J 19), makes that the life of man is a constant battle,
as John writes in his First Letter. In the whole Holy Scripture, sin is not a first or the last word.
Yes, it is true that man counterplotted the God’s plans by his disobedience and anger but the saving will of God is
stronger than any sin. The Bible story about the fall of man does not end on the word of punishment but it ends
with the word of the promise of salvation, “protoevangelium” – the first Good News. CCC #410 says: “After his
fall, man was not abandoned by God. On the contrary, God calls him and in a mysterious way heralds the coming
victory over evil and his restoration from his fall. This passage in Genesis is called the Protoevangelium (“first
gospel”): the first announcement of the Messiah and Redeemer, of a battle between the serpent and the Woman,
and of the final victory of a descendant of hers.”
In Genesis we read the words of God to the serpent: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and
between your offspring and hers; he will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” That means that the
human life cannot be suppressed after all. The Fathers of the Church have interpreted these words as being the
promise and referred them to Jesus Christ. He is now that “offspring” who will crush the head of the “serpent” and
will save the humanity from the curse of sin.
The history of the fall of man shows God’s grace. Even though, God threatened a man that he will die because
of his disobedience and yet allows man to continue to live and survive. God gives a man leatherette cloths and
protects him from the rudeness of nature. That means, God wanted from the very beginning, to correct the
disturbed relationships of man with the world or at least make them bearable. After the fratricide done by Cain on
Abel, God announces Himself the protector of human life and from this protection God doesn’t cut off even Cain,
the murderer. So, the life of man, the image of God, is a holy one and inviolable.
CCC #412 asks a question: “But why did God not prevent the first man from sinning?” and gives an answer by
citing St. Leon the Great, Pope: “Christ’s inexpressible grace gave us blessings better than those the demon’s envy
had taken away.” And St. Thomas Aquinas says: “There is nothing to prevent human nature’s being raised up to
something greater, even after sin; God permits evil in order to draw forth some greater good.” And in the Exulted
we will sing: “O happy fault … which gained for us so great a Redeemer!”
Work in the southwest corner of church completed
There are other expenses ahead of us. After taking down the ceiling and floor tiles of asbestos on the choir loft,
the ceiling there is opened up to the roof boards and the choir floor is not covered. I asked the contractor, who is
painting the church, for his estimation of doing only the choir ceiling. His price was over $14,000. I thought it is
too high and I did not accept his offer. I will appreciate if some parishioners would come up with some answers
regarding the choir ceiling and floor!!!
Talking about the renovation in our church, I would like to express my gratitude to the following parishioners for
their donation toward these works last week: Mr. & Mrs. Z. T. Wypych - $100; Mr. & Mrs. C. M. Naglak - $100;

Parish Pastoral Council Corner—2/6/2013
* The FHM Parish Pastoral Council met on Wednesday,
February 6th. Attendance was at 75% for this meeting.
Father Wojciech read the passage from the Sunday
Gospel.
* Final accounting of our New Years Dance party
showed $1539.11 profit for the parish. Attendance for
this event was good per Mrs. Guziak. Mrs. Majka
pointed out how we can always count on our
parishioners to “support our parish events.” Mr. Koziel
pointed out that “increasing attendance” should be one
of our goals for all future events.
* Chairman Valle pointed out that FHM is still lacking
the “one big event” now needed to erase the deficit in
the parish budget.
* Discussion proceeded to repairs on parish facilities.
Father Wojciech informed us the church is repaired for
the most part, with the choir loft area left to be
finished. Larger discussion reviewed possible work to
be one in the Abramowicz Hall, the former convent
and Pope John Paul II School.
* The PPC secretary read a paragraph from page 133
of the FHM Diamond Jubilee yearbook.
* To finance improvements to the parish campus, Mr.
Kwak suggested “leveraging the Niemiec legacy gift”
as part of our long term plans.
* Amid talk of “consolidation” and other options,
Father stated “FHM is stronger now than we were ten
years ago.” Discussion of increasing the weekly
envelope contributions was opened, but not completed
as we concluded with a prayer.
* The next FHM PPC meeting is March 6th, 2013 at
7:00 p.m. in the Rectory.

Pro-Life News
On Saturday, February 2, 2013, SpeakOut Illinois held its 22
annual Pro-Life Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in
Rosemont, Illinois. The „50 Million and Counting: Forty Years of
Roe v. Wade” conference featured a coalition of over 35 ProLife organizations from across the state of all denominationsCatholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Protestant and Jewish- and honored
this year’s outstanding leaders for their work in the Pro-Life
movement. Among those in attanedance was our own Pro-Life
Coordinator, Casey Niedos, along with Bernie Judeikis, Pro-Life
Coordinator from neighboring Immaculate Conception Parish.
While there, the two had the opportunity to speak with Father
Frank Hoffman, JCD, aka Father Rocky from Relevant Radio
950 AM.

Pro-Life Sponsored Essay & Poster Contest
at Pope John Paul II Catholic School
Back in January 2013, the 7th & 8th grade students of Pope
John Paul II School participated in an essay and poster drawing
contest during Respect Life month. The contest was sponsored
by the F.H.M. Parish Pro-Life Group and its purpose was to
create awareness of and foster a Pro-Life attitude among the
youth in the school.
The poster drawings that were submitted are displayed at the
main entrance to the church. Please take a moment to stop by
and see the work of our future Pro-Life leaders. Each poster is
numbered and the numbers correspond to a list with the
student’s name.
First Reconciliation / First Holy Communion Meeting

Confirmandi Commitment Mass
Last Saturday, February 9, the students from our Parish
Religious Education Program and from Pope John Paul II
School who are preparing to receive the sacrament of
Confirmation attended the 4:00 p.m. with their parents. During
the Mass each Confirmation candidate was called forward by
name, and together they pledged to pray daily, to attend Sunday
Mass, to perform service hours, and to study more intensely in
order to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. After the
pledge, each candidate signed their name in the Commitment
Book set up in the sanctuary, and in exchange received a
„WWJD” bracelet. The bracelet is to remind them of the pledge
they made and of „What Would Jesus Do?” in their daily lives.

MYŚLI I SŁOWA PROBOSZCZA, KS. WOJCIECHA BARYSKIEGO
Myśl...Albo Dwie...
Rok Wiary – Wierzę w Jednego Boga, stworzyciela nieba i ziemi...
Z okazji Roku Wiary, kontynuujemy rozważania nad pierwszym Artykułem Credo: „Wierzę w
jednego Boga, Ojca wszechmogącego, stworzyciela nieba i ziemi, wszystkich rzeczy widzialnych i
niewidzialnych”, a dzisiaj popatrzmy na stan pierwotny człowieka i raj, a szczególnie na upadek
człowieka: grzech pierworodny. A jednak, „Nie pozostawiłeś go pod władzą śmierci”.
Dramatyczna sytuacja świata, w jakiej się znalazł po upadku pierwszych rodziców, który
„cały ... leży w mocy Złego, sprawia, że życie człowieka jest walką”, jak pisze św. Jan w swoim 1
Liście. W całym Piśmie św., grzech nie jest pierwszym i ostatnim słowem. Tak, człowiek może
swoim nieposłuszeństwem i złością pokrzyżować Boże plany, jednakże zbawcza wola Boga jest mocniejsza nad
każdy grzech. Biblijna historia upadku człowieka nie kończy się słowem kary, ale obietnicą zbawienia,
protoewangelią – pierwszą Radosną Nowiną. KKK #410 mówi: „Po swoim upadku człowiek nie został opuszczony
przez Boga. Przeciwnie, Bóg wzywa go i zpowiada mu tajemnicze zwycięstwo nad złem oraz podniesienie go z
upadku. Fragment Księgi Rodzaju, który mówi na ten temat, został nazwany ‘Protoewangelią”, będącą pierwszą
zapowiedzią Mesjasza Odkupiciela, walki między wężem i Niewiastą oraz ostatecznego zwycięstwa jej potomka”. W
Księdze Rodzaju czytamy: „Wprowadzam nieprzyjaźń między ciebie a niewiastą, pomiędzy potomstwo twoje a
ptomstwo jej: ono zmiażdży ci głowę, a ty zmiażdżysz mu piętę”. Wynika stąd, że życia ludzkiego nie można
ostatecznie stłumić. Ojcowie Kościoła interpretowali te słowa jako słowa obietnicy i odnosili je do Chrystusa. On
jest teraz tym „potomstwem”, które zmiażdży głowę węża i wyzwoli ludzkość spod przekleństwa grzechu.
Już historia upadku człowieka w raju mówi, że Bóg okazuje łaskę. Jakkolwiek zagroził śmiercią za
nieposłuszeństwo pozwala jednak żyć człowiekowi dalej. Bóg troszczy się, by człowiek żył nadal i przeżył: daje mu
odzienie ze skóry i chroni przed surowością przyrody. Chce więc od początku zakłócone relacje człowieka ze
światem uczynić przynajmniej znośnymi. Po bratobójstwie dokonanym przez Kaina na Ablu Bóg ogłasza się
obrońcą życia ludzkiego, a spod tej obrony nie wyłącza nawet nikczemnego zbrodniarza. A więc życie człowieka,
obrazu Bożego, jest święte i nienaruszalne.
KKK #412 zadaje pytanie: „Dlaczego jednak Bóg nie powstrzymał pierwszego człowieka od grzechu”. I daje
odpowiedż cytując Św. Leona Wielkiego: „Niewypowiedziana łaska Chrytusa dała nam większe dobra, niż te,
których nas pozbawiła zawiść demona”. A Św. Tomasz z Akwinu mówi: „Nic nie sprzeciwia się temu, żeby natura
ludzka po grzechu została przeznaczona do jeszcze wyższego celu. Bóg bowiem dopuszcza zło, aby wyprowadzić z
niego jeszcze większe dobro. W Exsultet z Wielkiej Soboty usłyszymy: „Szczęśliwa wina, skoro ją zgładził tak wielki
Odkupiciel”.
Upiększania zachodniej części kościoła zakończone
Przed nami będą jeszcze dodatkowe wydatki, jako że po usunięciu azbestowych płytek sufitowych i podłogowych
na chórze, został odsłonięty sufit aż do desek dachowych i została nie zakryta podłoga chóru. Poprosiłem
pracującą kompanię o wycenę prac związanych z pokryciem sufitu nad chórem. Ich wycena wynosiła ponad 14 tys.
dolarów. Uważałem to za wysokę cenę i nie zgodziłem się na wykonanie tej pracy. Będę wdzięczny jeśli ktoś z
parafian przyjdzie z odpowiedzią na ten temat!!!
Mówiąc o pracach nad naszym kościelnym sufitem, pragnę podziękować tym wszystkim, którzy w ubiegłym
tygodniu złożyli swoje dary na malowanie kościoła: pp. Z.T. Wypych - $100; pp. C.M. Naglak - $100; pp. W.D.
Bajek - $50; i pp. J.J. Zapolski - $20.
Następna „Niedziela z Błogosławionym Janem Pawłem II”
Na spotkanie marcowe z okazji naszej „Niedzieli z Błogosławionym Janem Pałem II”, to znaczy 3 marca,
zapraszają wszystkich parafian państwo: M.Z. Kołpak, S.J. Mierzwa, P.B. Kępińscy. Oby te nasze pierwsze niedziele
miesiąca pomagały nam czcić i uciekać się do wstawiennictwa naszego Błogosławionego Papieża. Ks. Wojciech

Doroczny Katolicki Apel
Wdzięczny jestem Drogim Parafianom
za odzew na wezwanie Kardynała. Jak do
tej pory 126 rodzin zobowiązało się złożyć
na Katolicki Apel $7,921 a już złożyli
$4,618.24! Zaprawdę dzięki składam Panu Bogu i
Wam, Drodzy Rodacy za podjęcie tej wspaniałej
decyzji: ofiarowania i przyjścia z pomocą innym. Pan
Bóg takiej ofiarności nie zapomni!!!

dochód był $1539.11. Zastanawiano się, jak
zmobilizować parafian do liczniejszego uczestniczenia
w parafialnych wydarzeniach.
* Potrzebne jest jakieś jedno wielkie, dochodowe
wydarzenie, aby zmiejszyć deficyt w bodżcie
parafialnym.
* Dyskusje nad ewentualnymi pracami rementowymi
przy Sali bo Abramowicza, i co z konwentem?
* Projekt finansowego uzdrowienia parafii tzw.
„leveraging the Niemiec legacy gift” będzie
przedstawony podczas następnego zebrania.
* Dyskusja na temat używania kopert parafialnych
podczas składek niedsielnych, nie została zakończona.
* Następne zebranie Rady Parafialnej odbędzie się 6
marca, 2013 o godz 7:00 p.m.
