God of love and compassion, before this season of unrest, we had grown comfortable with thinking of them only as they relate to us - as our parents and spouses, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends. Today, history and circumstance, force us to release them into your care and into our country’s service. We pray for them and bless them in your name. Grant them your protection and a safe return home. Amen. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Your participation in this work of justice and kindness strengthens our parish’s commitment to the poor and needy. May God bless you. Page Four Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 6, 2003 What is Lightning? The action of rising and descending air within a thunderstorm separates positive and negative charges. Water and ice particles also affect the distribution of electrical charge. Lightning results from the buildup and discharge of electrical energy between positively and negatively charged areas. Lightning Myths and Facts MYTH: If it is not raining, then there is no danger from lightning. FACT: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. MYTH: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car will protect you from being struck by lightning. FACT: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside. MYTH: People struck by lightning carry an electrical charge and should not be touched. FACT: Lightning-strike victims carry no electrical charge and should be attended to immediately. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter for information on CPR and first aid classes. MYTH: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat. FACT: What is referred to as "heat lightning" is actually lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard. However, the storm may be moving in your direction! Lightning Safety •If lightning is occurring and a sturdy shelter is not available, get inside a hard top automobile and keep windows up. •Get out of boats and away from water. •Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Use phones ONLY in an emergency. •Do not take a bath or shower. •Turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can overload the compressors. If Caught Outdoors and No Shelter Is Nearby: •Find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles. Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding. •If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shorter trees. •If you feel your skin tingle or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet. Place your hands on your knees with your head between them. Make yourself the smallest target possible, and minimize your contact with the ground. •If you are boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter immediately! Stay safe and informed, Mark Hoekzema WeatherBug Meteorologist TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The American summer is officially underway, and people are on the move. Signs of hospitality are everywhere. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ visit home is hardly marked by hospitality. He goes up to the “bema,” the elevated place for solemn public reading of the Torah, and his message is poorly received. Today, we read from the descendent of the “bema,” the “ambo,” almost an “altar of the Word of God.” Many ancient ambos are preserved in Italy, decorated with marble, ivory, precious metal, and jewels. Six hundred years ago, the pulpit came into use, meant for preaching rather than proclamation of Scripture. Before microphone systems, pulpits were often located halfway down the church, amid the gathered people, and not so clearly associated with the altar. Today, the ambo (the plural is “ambone!”) is an expected feature of our worship spaces because the Word is once again proclaimed to the people. Before 1964, typically the readings were done quietly by the priest at the altar in Latin, and optionally repeated in English from the pulpit. With the restored place of Scripture in our worship, a beautiful and worthy ambo, related in design to the altar table, has once again become a prominent and familiar feature of Catholic architecture. © Copyright, J. Shape a daily rhythm of work as prayer and help children see play as prayer. Be willing to take the example of St. Veronica and be willing to stand up for someone who needs a friend. Life moves too fast. “Here today; gone tomorrow,” seems to be the contemporary motto by which we live. We move through schools, majors, career choices, and jobs. We see friends come and go. We treasure some relationships; mourn others. Many young adult people in their twenties and thirties, single or married, sense that everything develops and grows except their religious heritage. We knew what it meant to be young and Catholic, but we’re not kids anymore. Now what does it mean to be a Catholic young adult? Often that question stays a question, no answer given. This summer Our Lady of Victory is extending an invitation to the young adult people in our parish and surrounding parishes to participate in a very special program: Theology-on-Tap. This four-week speaker program will help young adults focus on the important questions in their lives. Theology-on-Tap will present challenging speakers who will help young adults integrate their religious convictions into their personal lives. This program begins the week of July 13th. It runs for four weeks. Our Lady of Victory is one of fifty parishes around the Archdiocese who will be hosting Theology-on-Tap. The program will end with a special Sunday Mass on August 10th celebrated by Cardinal George in Holy Name Cathedral. It will be a coming together of young adults from all around the Archdiocese. It all begins in mid-July. Plan on it. We invite you to join us on Monday evenings, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the School Hall. July 14—How Catholics Read Scripture Fr. July 6, 2003 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine News from The Women’s Center The Women’s Center is a pregnancy resource center which enables mothers to give birth to their babies. Research shows that 90% of women who have had abortions reported that their emotions are deadened. 28% attempt suicide. Abortion not only kills a human being, it deeply wounds the mother. Each year at The Women’s Center we help about 2,000 mothers bring their babies into the world through our counseling, material assistance and friendship. We also provide post abortion counseling. We have a group of volunteers who have formed a mentoring program for our clients who are new moms. They will provide practical assistance, mothering advice and ongoing support. If you are a mother or grandma and are interested in helping, call Kathy at 773-794-8807 for more information. One way to support our work and get a bargain is by taking a membership in our Family Life Resource Center. We have a variety of items including gift wrap, greeting cards, paper goods, party items, tools, toys, cosmetics, seasonal items, and more. For information and hours call 773794-1313. We have a very rewarding volunteer opportunity at our Cicero Avenue Family Room helping our clients pick up necessities for their families free of charge. We also need people to sort clothes. We are also seeking a volunteer for our North Riverside counseling office. For more information, please call Kathy at 773-794-8807. At the present time we are seeking donations of gently used sleepers, onesies, infant undershirts, receiving and larger crib blankets, girls and boys clothing (sizes 6 and up), maternity clothing and women’s extra large clothing. Also needed are new baby bottles, size 4 diapers and toiletries — shampoo, soap, dish soap and laundry detergent. The following are needed for our moms: port-a-cribs, infant car seats, infant swings, double strollers, foldable high chairs, recent baby cribs, bumper pads and mattresses. If you have or attend a garage sale and buy any of these to donate to our moms, it would be most appreciated. We cannot accept used toys at this time. To help us with any of these items or to have them picked up call 773-794-1313. St. Ferdinand Parish Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L.
