Stewardship Note: Am I my brother’s keeper? All three readings today suggest that for the Christian steward the answer is “Yes!”. Word of life. Yesterday was a dark day in the history of humanity, a terrible affront to human dignity. . . .How is it possible to commit acts of such savage cruelty? The human heart has depths from which schemes of unheard-of ferocity sometimes emerge, capable of destroying in a moment the normal daily life of a people. But faith comes to our aid at these times when words seem to fail. Christ’s word is the only one that can give a response to the questions which trouble our spirit. Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. Christian hope is based on this truth; at this time our prayerful trust draws strength from it. TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 4, 2011 “If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.” A Message of Love. In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Jesus present to us. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dissuade a person from evil, then he, too, will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). The second collection this weekend is for Diocesan Obligations. NOVENA TO THE DIVINE MERCY Today is the first Sunday of the month which has been set aside for special devotions to the Divine Mercy. This afternoon at 3:00p.m. we will sing the chaplet to the Divine Mercy, spend some time in meditation and conclude the service with benediction. MONDAY IS LABOR DAY Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882. Traditionally, Labor Day signifies the end of summer when Americans celebrate with picnics, barbecues and other public events. Labor Day gives us the opportunity to be grateful for our jobs, especially in these difficult economic times. In our work we find peace, fulfillment and holiness if it is done with the love for God and our families. No matter what our task in life is, when we do it with the spirit of joy and honesty we bring dignity to our labor. We wish all a pleasant and safe Labor Day! ENTRANCE TO THE BASILICA The first phase of the work at the entrance to the church is completed. The stairs are sturdy, durable, esthetic and blend well with the surroundings. A lot of time and effort has been dedicated to the bronze doors. It is interesting to note that the doors which were cleaned using a special formula, within days, rapidly changed the color due to oxidation, intensified by the elements, perhaps even strong sunlight. Several layers of lacquer will allow the natural color of bronze to be preserved and enhance the distinct beauty of the doors. At the present time, we have collected $23,053. We are grateful to several families who have already attained their goal of $1,000. PARISH COUNCIL BALLOTS The Parish Council is comprised of elected and appointed members. At every Mass this weekend and next weekend we will place ballots in the pews and kindly ask you to vote as indicated on the ballot. Please deposit your ballot in the collection basket. The RCIA is the process by which persons who were never baptized, or were baptized in another Christian tradition, or never received their First Communion or Confirmation and wish to learn more about the Catholic faith and become members of the Church. If you or you know of someone in these situations, please have them contact the Religious Education Office.
