About the workshop
Questions raised in the workshop
Business is depending on all those products and
services that ecosystems provide. Companies are not
just relying on but also affect ecosystems, including
their resource use, pollution and waste production.
Forward-looking companies across Europe have
already realized the importance of reducing their
negative impact on the ecosystems. However,
ecosystems mean not just a risk but also
opportunities. The demand for environmentally
friendly products is increasing, whilst the market for
green business innovations is growing. Besides,
efficient resource use can bring competitive
advantage. Research has shown that 87% of the
consumers expect companies to take conservation
measures.
 How much are European companies
dependent on natural capital?
 How can companies reduce the use of
resources and connected costs?
 How do international and national
regulatory framework regarding
biodiversity and resource use affect
companies in Europe? What are the best
ways to comply with?
 How can sustainable operation yield higher
consumer confidence and better
reputation?
 What CEE best practices regarding resource
use, biodiversity conservation and NGObusiness cooperation exist?
 What do CEE regional business need to
grow more resource efficient and more
sustainable?
About CEEweb for Biodiversity
CEEweb for Biodiversity is a network of 62 non-governmental conservation organizations in the Central and
Eastern European region established in 1994. Our mission is the conservation of biodiversity through the
promotion of sustainable development.
CEEweb started to work with firms and companies in 2007. In 2013, we developed Guidelines for strengthening
the cooperation between companies and NGOs. Our network of Central and Eastern European companies and
NGOs is continuously expanding. CEEweb is the only Central and Eastern-European member of the European
Commission’s Business & Biodiversity Platform initiative, which includes the biggest European companies,
NGOs and EU institutions.
CEEweb would like to help companies in making strategic decisions that are both environmentally friendly and
ensure long term competitiveness. We believe that cooperation between companies and green NGOs can help
both sides to conserve natural capital more efficiently.

Business game:
Homoresponsabilis
Time: 6 Nov 2014, 15.30 – 18.30
Place : Faculty of Management, room 115
University of Łódź
Scenario Game
The game relies on the interaction between different teams playing the role of companies active on
the international market for cotton. The product traded is cotton long-sleeved shirts. The different
actors are: manufacturers located in Pakistan, retailers located in Poland, consumers in Karachi and
Poland. These companies need to acquire their raw materials (cotton), produce shirts, trade
agreements with customers, sell shirts (or buy), with a profit motive (to face their fixed charges and
to pay back a bank loan). They are subject to various constraints (market, legislation, social pressure,
etc..) and face different economic, social and environmental events (competition, pollution,
workers’ claims, etc.) that lead them to make decisions and take informed action, that are more or
less sustainable and consistent with the principles of social responsibility and environmental
responsibility. Besides the actors met throughout the game, “life-event cards” reveal other
“stakeholders”, including NGOs, media workers, local communities, consumers sensitive for the
environment and working conditions, auditors, certification bodies, etc. Moreover, companies are
faced with the choice of labelling or not their products (ethical label and / or ‘sustainable cotton’
label) and have to put up with their suppliers the various steps necessary to “chain of custody”
certification process. The turns are punctuated by the game facilitator who guides the teams
through the “schedule of activities”, broken down into six phases: planning, negotiation, payments,
purchase of raw materials, manufacturing and sales. The final turn of play sees the teams paying
back their bank loans and make the final report of their activities (net benefit, quality and number of
units sold, environmental and social actions).
Project
„Homoresponsabilis in the globalized World” is Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation Project
(2011-1-PL1-LEO05-19895).
Our project deals with such issues as corporate social resonsibility, global education, north-south
trade relations, responsibility of managers and ethical aspects of decision making process. Within
the project Homoresponsabilis in the Globalized World we transferred a successful simulation game
developed by Groupe One (Belgium) which is one of the core partner in the Project. The transfer
was done to Poland, Bulgaria and Austria (the respective parters are: University of Łódź
(coordinator), TIME-Ekoprojects Foundation and BEST Institut für berufsbezogene Weiterbildung
und Personaltraining GmbH).
