HEART WEDNESDAY, January 29th 9:00 LOST AND FOUND In Loving Memory of Peter Wojcik Donated by Joan Wojcik CARRY THE LOAD The chief thing is to take the burden on one’s shoulders. As you press forward, it soon shakes down and the load DIVISION It is a situation that plays itself out in more and less significant ways: Christians divided. A CYO basketball game between two neighboring parishes. Parents of the young players scream insults and threats at one another and assert their “superiority.” A Protestant and a Catholic church sit on adjoining properties. Each is vigilant about having parking violators removed from its own “private” parking lot. An old pastor retires but continues to reside at the parish. A new pastor arrives and quickly finds his faith “community” choosing sides against him. Saint Paul addresses similar disagreements in the early church at Corinth. He encourages the church there to make up their differences and to be united again in their belief and practice. Today’s first reading from Isaiah speaks of a people weighed down by the yoke of sin and darkness. Certainly the bickering and differences among us can be classified as such. The Gospel tells of the beginning ministry of Jesus. The Light has come, encouraging us to “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. SEEKING THE LIGHT FEAST OF FAITH In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes, “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom. Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish - when he realizes who is in the boat with him - he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison - Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiving love of Christ. I rzekł do nich: Pójdźcie za Mną, a uczynię was rybakami ludzi. I obchodził Jezus całą Galileę, nauczając w tamtejszych synagogach, głosząc Ewangelię o królestwie i lecząc wszelkie choroby i wszelkie słabości wśród ludu.
