The stereometry is determined at the design stage using dedicated software, individually for the mining machine’s specific working conditions. Inspecting the conformity of pickboxes’ arrangement and setting to the working documentation plays an important part in the manufacturing process of working units for mining machines. The inspection generally consists of measuring the stereometric parameters being a set of values determining a position on the side surface and spatial arrangement of each pickbox. The methods currently in use are very time- and work-consuming and feature poor accuracy, especially when measuring angles determining the spatial arrangement of individual pickboxes. The design and operation of the instruments used for this purpose is often complicated. The measurement method and mathematical measurement model established allow to determine, relatively easily, the spatial arrangement and setting of pickboxes at the side surface of working units in mining machines equipped with conical picks (tangential rotary) with the required measuring accuracy using typical measuring instruments used commonly in the metrology of geometric values and in the coordination measuring technique. It is an indirect method based on the measurement of translation coordinates of three non-collinear characteristic measuring points for the pickbox in the three-dimensional space of the measuring station. Opracowana metoda stanowi wygodne narzędzie zwłaszcza w zakresie pomiaru kątów determinujących ustawienie uchwytów nożowych bez konieczności stosowania skomplikowanych, uciążliwych w obsłudze i najczęściej mało dokładnych przyrządów pomiarowych wyposażonych w kątomierze. Wyniki tych badań przedstawione zostaną w artykule zamieszczonym w zeszycie 1 kwartalnika Archives of Mining Science w roku 2011. Introduction The working process of mining machines used in the underground and stripping mining industry and in tunnel construction is generally performed in connection with rock mining. According to the type and properties of rocks deposited within the area of the face of operating workings, opening workings and development workings or tunnels, it can be achieved using different techniques and methods. The mining process using mining machines in the underground mining and tunnel construction industries is generally performed by: cutting, static pressure or stroke. The basic mechanical mining method carried out by roadheaders/longwall shearers, however, is mining by cutting with rotary tangential picks (conical picks), radial picks or optionally – with disc tools (Jonak, 2002; Kotwica & Gospodarczyk, 2007; Krauze, 2000; Krauze & Kotwica, 2007; Krauze et al., 2009; Rostami et al., 1995; Sikora et al., 2000). The efficiency of rock mining with roadheaders/shearers is substantially determined with the stereometry of their working units – cutting heads – for roadheaders and cutting drums – for longwall shearers. The stereometric parameters of cutting heads and drums of mining machines characterising the method of arranging and setting in the space the pickboxes welded to the side surface and the geometry of the picks seated in them have, therefore, a significant effect on the progress of the rock mining process. The stereometry of cutting heads (drums) is decisive to a large extent for process efficiency, its energy consumption and pick wear rate. It also influences the load applied on the pick, as well as the value and character of dynamic load on the main components of the roadheader (shearer), including in particular the drive in the cutting system 750 and its load-carrying structure, decisive – to a large degree – for the durability and reliability of such machine’s operation. The system of picks at the side surface of mining machines’ working units in mining machines, hence the number and method of arranging and setting the pickboxes in the space are determined at the design stage, on a case-to-case basis for the specific conditions of the roadheader’s (shearer’s) application. Dedicated software for supporting and optimising the design process of working units in mining machines is used for that purpose (Dolipski et al., 2007; Hurt & Morris, 1985; Jonak, 2001; Rostami et al., 1994; Speight, 1997; Tiryaki et al., 2001). The control of pickbox arrangement and setting conformity to technical documentation at each stage of mining machines working units’ production is, therefore, important for the manufacturing process, in particular during joining and after final welding. Assembly errors or improper welding technology for pickboxes may cause even substantial deviations for their actual and nominal placement. It may result in the incorrect operation of working units, which in turn will lead to the mining machine’s low operating efficiency, overloads for its drives and undesired vibrations, excessive consumption of energy and the wear of consumables and finally an increased failure rate. The control of pickboxes’ correct position consists of measuring the stereometric parameters of working units being a set of values determining a position on the side surface and spatial arrangement of each pickbox. The stereometric parameters of a mining machine’s working unit are thus measured by determining the values of at least six geometric parameters for each pickbox attached to it. Due to often a large number of pickboxes of mining machines working units, a measuring procedure for their position has been complex so far and has been very time- and work-consuming. The issue of designing and producing mining machines working units, including also the measurement of their stereometry, steps beyond the manufacturing of machines for the mining industry. Mining machines or the working accessories of other machines (for example excavators) equipped with working units with their design and operating method similar to roadheaders/shearers are also used in construction and road works for mining rock, concrete, asphalt or other materials with similar properties. 2. Formulation of metrological task The position of pickboxes at the side surface of a mining machine’s working unit is defined with spatial coordinates in the cylindrical system representing the position of the pick tip seated in the considered pickbox (Dolipski & Cheluszka, 1999). The parameters for each pickbox are, therefore (Fig. 1): − the distance of pick tip (point S) from the axis of rotation of the working unit measured in the plane of rotation, i.e. the plane crossing the point S perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the working unit (axis Z of the local XYZ reference system) – r, − the distance of pick tip S from the base plane XY – z, − the angle between the line going through the tip S of the pick and point T and the line parallel to the axis X lying in the plane of rotation of the considered pick – ϑ. The distance of the tip of the considered pick r is the diameter of the circle lying in the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the working unit (rotation plane) where the pick tip 751 Fig. 1. Parameters describing the spatial arrangement of pick tips is arranged (point S). The plane is away from the base plane XY connected with the base of the mining machine’s working unit base by value z. The setting of pickboxes is a result of the spatial position of the pick’s longitudinal axis determining the position of pickbox socket’s axis, in which its mandrel is seated and a result of the shape of the mining machine working unit’s side surface in the surrounding of the pickbox base’s contact with such side surface. The issue of describing pickboxes spatial arrangement at their side surface is complicated for the working units of mining machines equipped with tangential rotary picks (Jonak, 2002; Menzel & Frenyo, 1995). The different methods of defining the parameters describing such setting are employed. The local reference system where the situation of each of the pickboxes is determined, may be connected with the pick tip and with the diameter of the circle onto which it is arranged, optionally with the pickbox base. In order to determine unequivocally the spatial position of pickboxes, when the position of the tip of the related pick is known, it is therefore enough to give the values of three angles characterising the spatial position of the pick axis (seat axis in the pickbox) and the plane of symmetry of the pickbox going through the axis. It was assumed that the angles describing pickbox setting will be defined in the reference system determined for each pickbox with three mutually perpendicular planes (Dolipski & Cheluszka, 2002), i.e. (Fig. 2): − plane of rotation (ABCS) – perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the working unit (axis Z), − plane of incidence (ADES) – defined by the axis of rotation of the working unit and the — — tip S of the pick related to the considered pickbox (sections: AD and SE are parallel to axis Z), − the plane of application (CFES) – transiting through the tip S of the pick. 752 The angles in such defined reference system include (Fig. 2): − pick axis setting angle (δ) – being the pick axis inclination angle to the plane of application (CFES) measured in the agreed plane of symmetry of the pick (AQFS), − pick axis inclination angle (ε) – determining the deflection of the agreed pick symmetry plane (AQFS) to the plane of rotation (ABCS), − pickbox deflection angle (Θ) – defined as the angle of rotation of the plane of pickbox symmetry around the pick axis (SQ) measured from the agreed pick symmetry plane (AQFS). The agreed plane of symmetry of the pick is understood here as the plane going through the longitudinal axis of the pick (pickbox seat) that coincides with the plane of rotation (ABCS) when the pick axis inclination angle ε = 0. If angle ε is different than zero, than the plane is rotated around radius r (straight SA) by the value of such angle. Fig. 2. Parameters characterising the arrangement of pickboxes in the space The adopted definition of angles describing the spatial arrangement of pickboxes is clearly detailing the method of their arrangement at the side surface of a mining machine’s working unit. A pickbox is first rotated around the axis going through the point representing the position of the pick tip by angle δ, whereas the pickbox’s plane of symmetry is lying in the plane of rotation and thus determines the agreed plane of symmetry of the related pick. Next, the pickbox is rotated 753 around radius r (SA straight) by angle ε, thus the pickbox’s plane of symmetry still coinciding with the agreed plane of symmetry of the pick is deflected from the plane of rotation by the value of this angle. At the end, the pickbox is rotated around the axis of the socket made inside the pickbox by angle Θ. As a result, the pickbox’s plane of symmetry is rotated in relation to the agreed plane of symmetry of the pick by the value of angle Θ. The right or left working units of mining machines are distinguished considering the method of arranging pickboxes at the side surface. The left working unit is the mirror reflection of the right working unit with respect to the plane going though its axis of rotation (axis Z). The right and left working unit is differentiated according to the twisting direction of helixes along which pickboxes are arranged at its side surface. It does not change the method of defining the abovementioned angles. The values of mining machine working units’ stereometric parameters have been determined so far by measuring spatial coordinates (in a cylindrical system or Cartesian system) of the position reference point of the pick tip related to the considered pickbox and by measuring immediately the three characteristic angles describing the spatial position of the pickbox. The measurement of coordinate values of the pick tip in the space with the assumed, even high accuracy, is not a problem. Different measuring instruments can be used for this purpose, including also coordinate machines (Fig. 3). Fig. 3. A station for measuring the stereometry of mining machines working units (Source: Komotzki Bergbaubedarf GmbH) The determination of the angles describing the position of pickboxes by measuring them directly is difficult. This applies in particular to roadheader’s cutting heads that are relatively small items often provided with multiple pickboxes located close to one another. The large con- 754 centration of pickboxes on a small area of the cutting head’s side surface and their complicated spatial positioning makes it very difficult to measure the values with the required accuracy using traditional measuring instruments (protractor). The instruments have also frequently complicated design and operation (Fig. 4). Fig. 4. An instrument for measuring the angles of pickboxes setting (Kleinert, 1989) The measurement of the mining machine working unit’s stereometric parameters is therefore consisting in defining, through measurements, for all or chosen pickboxes they are provided with, a set of six parameters – the distance of the point representing the location of the pick tip to the axis of the reference system XYZ (radius of the circle on which it is situated and the distance of the plane of rotation to the base plane XY) and four angles (ϑ, δ, ε, Θ). The article presents a solution of the metrological task defined this way that allows to determine, relatively simply, the spatial arrangement and setting of pickboxes at the side surface of mining machines’ working units with the required measuring accuracy, using typical measuring instruments used for the metrology of geometric values and for the coordination measuring technique. 3. Mathematical model of measuring the stereometric parameters An indirect measuring method based on the measurement of the basic values covered by the definition of the values measured (Jakubiec & Malinowski, 2004) was adopted for implementing the metrological task adopted above. The values sought for (mining machine working unit’s stereometric parameters) are determined by measuring the geometric values that are easy to measure. In this case, such values will be the translational coordinates of three non-collinear 755 characteristic pickbox points in the three-dimension space of the measuring station determined by the axes of the global reference system X0Y0 Z0 (Fig. 5). It was assumed that such points are arranged in the plane of symmetry of the pickbox as follows: − point S – represents the position of the pick’s tip related to the considered pickbox, − point S1 – lies at the extension of the pick’s longitudinal axis (socket axis in the pickbox), − point S2 – lies at the line perpendicular to the pick’s longitudinal axis. Fig. 5. Spatial orientation of the local system of coordinates XYZ in the global system X0Y0 Z0 and the method of arranging pickbox measuring points The distance of point S to the face of the pickbox is equal to the pick’s extension from the pickbox ln. Point R (Fig. 6), being the intersection point of the pick’s longitudinal axis and of the line perpendicular to it, going through point S2, lies at the distance of bU from point S. For practical reasons, the distance may be slightly smaller than the pick’s extension from the pickbox ln. On the other hand the distance of point S1 from point S and of point S2 from R – are identified as: aU and cU. A measurement procedure for the stereometric parameters of a mining machine’s working unit consists, therefore, of measuring, for each of its pickbox, the translation coordinates of characteristic three measuring points: S(xS, yS, zS), S1(xS1, yS1, zS1) and S2(xS2, yS2, zS2) towards the axis of the X0Y0 Z0 global system of coordinates of the measuring station. It is also assumed that the position of the working unit’s axis of rotation (axis Z) and the base plane XY in the measuring space is known. The beginning of the local coordinate system XYZ related to the working 756 unit for which measurement is taken is located at the distance of x0, y0, z0, from the beginning of the system of coordinates X0Y0 Z0. It is also assumed that that plane XY is parallel to plane X0Y0. The values of coordinates for such points are then representing the input data allowing to determine the values of the stereometric parameters searched using the appropriate transition functions. The functions have the following form: r = (xS - x0 )2 + ( yS - y0 )2 (1) z = z 0 - zS (2) ì2p - jST - J1 , J=í , îjST + J1 for right working unit (3) for left working unit é a 2 + ( z - z )2 × tg2d ù S1 1ú d = arccos ê U 2 S ê ú a U × (1 + tg2d1) ë û (4) æ z - z S1 æ çç e = arcsin çç S è aU × cos d è (5) ì ésin e 1 × sin e × cosa1 - sin 2 e 1 × cos d 1 ù é sin e 1 ù ïarctg ê ú + arctg ê ú , when e ¹ 0 ï ëtg (d 1 - a 2 )û ëêtga1 × (cos d1 - sin e 1 × sin e × cosa1) ûú Q=í é yS - yS 2 - bU × cos (d1 + J1) ù ï , when e = 0 ú ïarccos ê cU × sin (d 1 + J1) ë û î (6) The distance between individual measuring points are equal here: aU = (xS1 - xS ) 2 + ( yS1 - yS ) 2 + (z S1 - zS ) 2 bU = cU = yS 2 - yS y S1 - y S zS 2 - zS z S1 - z S 2 + (7) dU2 - cU2 - aU zS 2 - zS z S1 - z S xS 2 - xS xS1 - xS (8) 2 + xS 2 - x S x S1 - xS yS 2 - y S yS1 - y S aU 2 (9) whereas: dU = (xS1 - xS 2) 2 + ( yS1 - yS 2) 2 + (z S1 - z S 2) 2 (10) Fig. 6. Conclusions The method and mathematic model of measurement presented in this article enables to determine the values of stereometric parameters of working units for mining machines equipped with conical picks (tangential rotary). The method established is a convenient tool, especially for measuring the angles determining the arrangement of pickboxes without having to use complicated measuring instruments with protractors that are difficult to operate and frequently have poor accuracy. The indirect measurement method used here based on determining, through measurements, the values of translation coordinates values for three characteristic measuring points of pickboxes, allows to use any measuring techniques for this purpose – contact or non-contact techniques – used commonly for machinery construction in the metrology of geometric values. An indicator verifying the suitability of the method established for the purpose of mining machine working units’ metrology, will be the attainable measuring accuracy of their stereometric parameters. A measurement uncertainty analysis for the values describing the stereometry of the working units considered here will have to be performed to determine such accuracy. The results of this research will be presented in the article printed in the first book of Archives of Mining Science in 2011. References Dolipski M., Cheluszka P., 1999.
