IDEA
For the first time, but – as the organizers cautioned – not the last, the Institute of
Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University (JU), national conference was organized in
collaboration with the Higher School of Public and Individual Security “Apeiron” (WSBPiL).
The title of the conference was: “The way the fight. Self-improvement and safety”. This
special meeting was held in a special place – the room of M. Bobrański, Collegium Maius.
In those medieval walls at Jagiellonian 15, in atmosphere created by tapestries and
paintings on the walls, proceedings were opened by principals – the organizers of the
conference – dr. Julius Piwowarski (Rector of WSBPiL “Apeiron”) and Assoc. Prof. Leszek
Sosnowski (representing the Institute of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University). They
greeted all the participants. They included members of the Scientific Committee, and Assoc.
Prof. Marta Kudelska (JU), Dr. Wojciech J. Cynarski, prof. UR, Prof. Stanisław Sterkowicz
(AWF Kraków), Prof. Stanisław Tokarski (Department of Non-European countries, PAN),
and Prof. Andrzej Szyszko-Bhusz, Dr. Joanna Hańderek, Dr. Anna I. Wójcik (Kraków), Dr.
Edward Skibiński (Poznań) and Prof. Roman Maciej Kalina (AWF Katowice).
J. Piwowarki poited out that it is not a philosopher-theorists opposition – practice
martial arts. But on the contrary, it ia a mutual inspiration. He noted that some of the
participants (who are also martial art/combat sports experts and humanists, scientists would
have to be divided into two. However, he pointed out that there are three titular professors
present in the courtroom, who are masters of martial arts – S. Tokarski (judoka), S.
Sterkowicz (hapkidoka and jujutsuka), and R. M. Kalina (judoka).
W. J. Cynarski added that A. Szyszko-Bohusz also has got a black belt in karate. The he
gave orders to outstanding humanist Nobilis Homo Creator knights, bestowed by the Chapter
of the Club of the European Nobility in 2010.

PROCEEDINGS
The first plenary session was led by W. J. Cynarski (who directly represented the
Department of Human Sciences Faculty of the PE Faculty, UR), as the leader of the
IMACSSS and the IPA - two specialized scientific societies. Scientific fest was began by
lecture of M. Kudelska titled: “Free self-knowledge in the heat of the battle”. Theoretical
considerations were based on classical Indian texts. There was discussion concentrated on
ethical, self-centered and existential problems of “Bhagavatgita” warriors; to what extent they
are still valid?
The second referent -A. Szyszko-Bohusz, founder of a holistic pedagogy, dished out his
original theories concerning self-improvement and personal security. His speech met with a
great interest of participants.
The third referent – S. Tokarski – undertook translation rules of ju-nori (softness,
flexibility, regression) as a universal strategy of martial arts. If the principle of tactics straight
from old man jujutsu can be used today, in the era of modern civilization?
After a short coffee break, the second session called management session, was taken
over by S. Tokarski. That session also presented three papers: Zbigniew Karolus – “Ninja –
Myths and Facts”, Chrispher Jankowiak - “Budo as a martial art, combat sport and
defence” as well as J. Piwowarski – “Japanese concept of safety culture”. Mr. Ch. Jankowiak

SUMMARY
In the end of deliberations of the conference, conclusions were made by L. Sosnowski,
editor-in-chief of “Aesthetics and Criticism” journal. The journal is written to publish selected
works from presented ones at the conference. Moreover, the interdisciplinary quarterly “Ido
Movement for Culture. Journal of Martial Arts Anthropology” is open to scientific
publications of philosophical and cultural, sociological and anthropological-cultural issues.
Theorists explain the meaning of practice, which in turn allows researchers to better
contact with reality – a kind of training ground and laboratory. Many participants draw their
knowledge from their many years’ observations. Due to it, cooperation (on the fringe of
philosophy, oriental and teaching physical education) should result in subsequent valuable
initiatives.
The next scientific meeting of experts in martial arts and humanities will be held in June
in Genoa, where the first IMACSSS conference is to be held. Incidentally, professors listed
above have several IMACSSS memberships and J. Piwowarski is also a member of the
Idokan Poland Association. Both societies assist in the integration and coordination of
research community interested in a cultural phenomenon of martial arts.

is the successor (soke) and the main champion of the late school master Toshimichi Takeuchi.
The goal of the session was to get to know the tradition of martial arts, a categorical
breakdown of humanistic theory of applied arts. Mr. Brewing developed conceptual issues of
provenance Japanese with reference to his original concept of the theory of security. Does the
public service (administration, safety culture) can be tested on Japanese efficiency as well as
applied in today’s Poland?
After lunch, the third session was continued in select groups of philosophers and
martial arts specialists, chaired by Dr. J. Piwowarski. The author presented Budo Kensho –
“Charter of Budo”. It is a set of rules and description of meaning of practising martial arts
roads in Japanese tradition. The content of the instrument was analyzed from the author’s
perspective, i.e. humanistic theory of martial arts.
The second lecture in that session was presented by Prof. S. Sterkowicz. It concerned
empirical Free Impact of programme activities and martial arts of judo on changing students’
risk of injury. The author used methodology that was developed by Prof. R. M. Kalina. It was
a practical exercise of physical dimension, slightly contrasting with strictly philosophical
reflection.
J. Hańderek had a very interesting speech titled in a very original and intriguing way:
“Way of the Samurai”. It was a reflection connected with film titled: “Ghost Dog” by Jim
Jarmush, routed efficiently from philosophy of culture perspective.
Prof. R. M. Kalina analyzed similarities between judo by Jigoro Kano and praxeology
by Kotarbiński. According to Prof. R. M. Kalina, judo pursues the same rules as praxeology
but also has a practical application in the form of physical exercises.
The fourth session was also led by Rector J. Piwowarski. In that session participants
listened to the lecture of Dr. Rafał Mazur (JU), who showed the audience the idea of “wise
mind”, for instance – chen taiji quan style. This is one of the oldest known styles as well as an
internal kung-fu.
A.
I. Wójcik considered place imperfections in Chinese philosophy with reference
to perfect systems such as martial arts. Then, the employee of the same Institute – L.
Sosnowski, discussed and interpreted the Platonic ideal of self-improvement. They provoked
an interesting discussion of merits.
Anyway, there were great debates held in accordance with the programme of the
conference at the end of each session. There were also the participants (Dr. E. Skibiński, Dr.
T. Ambroży, Prof. of the Academy of Physical Education in Kraków and others) who had no
instances of abstract.
