SPIE Student Chapter, Wroclaw University of Technology Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology Wybrzeze Wyspianskiego 27 50-370 Wroclaw Internet: http://www.if.pwr.wroc.pl/spie Report on the activities of SPIE Student Chapter at Wroclaw University of Technology for the period 12.2004 – 05.2005 We are expanding our numbers. We have currently 24 members and new members will join our ranks in the nearest future. 1. Promotion of Science • We are taking part in the celebrations of the International Year of Physics. • We were present at the educational fair TARED in Wroclaw. Our members hosted the presentation of our Faculty where they encouraged young people to study physics and optics at our University. We also presented two times a speech on Nanotechnology for the visitors of the fair, mainly people finishing high school, to show them the marvels of present technology and its applications. • We are trying to start the series of presentations for the pupils at high schools to persuade them that there is more to physics than they are taught and that physics in general and particularly optics may be fun and is extremely interesting and important in modern world. We do this to encourage good pupils to study in these fields. • We are starting to be involved in the organization of the Student Scientific Conference held at our University. This year its official language was Polish but we try to change into English and make it more international. 2. Contacts with other SPIE Chapters • We have guests from other Polish Chapters in Warsaw and Torun and also Mexico and Romania. They stayed in Wroclaw for two days. 3. Scientific Activities • The members of our chapter prepared several papers: Marcin Szpulak, Gabriela Statkiewicz, Jacek Olszewski, Tadeusz Martynkien, Waclaw Urbanczyk, Jan Wójcik, Mariusz Makara, Jacek Klimek, Tomasz Nasilowski, Francis Berghmans, Hugo Thienpont ,”Experimental and theoretical investigations of birefringent holey fiber with a triple defect”, Appl. Opt. 44, (2005) 2652-2658. Marcin Szpulak, Tadeusz Martynkien, Jacek Olszewski, Wacław Urbańczyk, Tomasz Nasiłowski, Rafał Kotyński, Francis Berghmans, and Hugo Thienpont, “Sensitivity of highly birefringent photonic bandgap fibers to temperature and strain”, Optical Fiber Sensors 2005, 319-322, Bruges, Belgium. Marcin Szpulak, Tadeusz Martynkien, Jacek Olszewski, Wacław Urbańczyk , “Sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure of birefringent photonic crystal fibers”, Optical Waveguide Theory and Numerical Modeling 2005, Grenoble, France, 2005. Wojciech Rudno-Rudzinski, G. Sek, K. Ryczko and J. Misiewicz, A. Somers, R. Schwertberger, J. P. Reithmaier and A Forchel, „Optically probed wetting laser in InAs/InGaAlAs/InP Quantum Dash structures.”, Applied Physics Letters 86 101904 (2005), J. Misiewicz, R. Kudrawiec, M. Motyka, J. Andrzejewski, D. Golub, A. Forchel, „Photo and contactless electroreflectance spectroscopy of step-like GaInAs/Ga(In)Nas/GaAs Quantum Wells”, Microelectronic Journal (2005) 4. Future plans - to make the program of lectures exchange more regular, to take part in activities of the International Year of Physics and Festival of Science, to visit optical fiber facility at UMCS in Lublin (maybe this time we will manage), to have more members. Our Chapter obtained 900 USD donation from SPIE. The money, together with the support obtained from Wroclaw University of Technology, was used to buy the computer data projector for our Chapter. Together with the notebook we purchased last year they constitute the base for our activities allowing us to prepare and show presentations both during our meetings and for external events.
