Our school needs your financial help. Your support of our school is greatly appreciated. MONDAY: May devotions in the English language with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be conducted at 6:30PM on Mondays followed by Mass and Novena. Tuesday through Friday May Devotions in Polish will be conducted after the 7:00PM Mass. NEXT SUNDAY: Next Sunday, May 30 at 9:00am a special Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by Fr. Edmund Gutowski, CM to commemorate his 50th Anniversary in the Priesthood. We encourage everyone to participate in this special Anniversary Mass of a Priest who is a member of the Congregation of the Mission, who spent many years ministering at this parish, and is a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish since birth. We extend to Fr. Ed our best wishes and assure him of our prayerful support. May the Good Lord grant him many more years in ministry and his priestly mission. The second collection next Sunday is for the Annual Catholic Appeal 2010. To date we have collected $13,472 of our goal of $55,000 goal assigned to our parishioners by the Bishop. Please help us to collect the balance of $41,528 as soon as possible. INFORMATION: The repairs to the lightning rods on the tallest steeple of the the church have been completed. During the most recent electrical storms the lightning rods were so severely damaged that they needed to be replaced. This was a very dangerous and difficult job technically. Thank God that everything went well, and we are again protected from the possibility of this natural disaster. Unfortunately, the cost of this replacement was very expensive. The total cost of the project cost over $20,000. In the special collection designated for this purpose, we collected $4,700 (i.e., an average of about $1.60 per person attending Sunday Mass on that day). Anyone still interested in making a donation can do so at the rectory office. As always, thank you for your generosity for the good of the parish. June 6 is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. As in the past years, we will exit the church onto the street to manifest our faith in the true and real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. We request that those organizations and families who prepared altars in past years, honor Christ in a similar manner this year. We encourage parents to bring their children to participate in the procession on that day. Let our presence express our gratitude to Christ for being with us always in such a mysterious way, as is the Eucharist. 23 maja 2010 3 NIEDZIELA: Druga składka w przyszłą niedzielę będzie przeznaczona na naszą szkołę parafialną. Bardzo prosimy o ofiarność. PONIEDZIAŁEK: Nowenna i Msza św. do Matki Bożej od Cudownego Medalika o godz. 9:00. 18:30 do 20:00 wieczorem. Zapraszamy. WTOREK: Nabożeństwo Majowe połączone z adoracją Najświętszego Sakramentu odprawiamy we wtorek, środę, czwartek i piątek po Mszy św. o godz. 19:00 w. j. polskim. Do zebrania pozostało $41,528. 4 MAY 23, 2010 Trochę o kapłaństwie przez pryzmat lat…. Będzie pracował z ubogimi duchowo i materialnie tam, gdzie pośle go Chrystus, Najwyższy Kapłan. Ojcu Albertowi składamy nasze najlepsze gratulacje z okazji święceń kapłańskich i zapewniamy go o naszym modlitewnym wsparciu. Niech dobry Bóg go chroni i prowadzi trudną drogą kapłańskiej misji. Składamy księdzu Edmundowi nasze najlepsze życzenia i zapewniamy go o naszym modlitewnym wsparciu. Niech dobry Bóg darzy go dalszymi latami w posłudze i kapłańskiej misji. Ks. Ks. Ks. John, był nauczycielem i dyrektorem w Kolegium Św. Jana Kantego w Erie, Pensylwania, oraz w katolickiej szkole średniej w Concord, New Hampshire. Obecnie pracuje on w diecezji Manchester, New Hampshire, gdzie jest odpowiedzialny za duchowe kształtowanie seminarzystów tej diecezji. Ks. Ks. Ks. Tomasz był szefem Zjednoczenia Kapłanów Polsko-Amerykańskich na całe Stany Zjednoczone i pełni mnóstwo innych obowiązków. 25 lat temu ks. PATRON 5 A little about priesthood through many years . . . The mass media, writes or speaks about priests, only when they discover in him a human weakness. And then, not only does the priest and his infractions get unreasonably publicized, but also the church and priesthood are unduly criticized as well. This is done because someone is not comfortable with priesthood as a result of his own battle with Christ. If someone cannot find fault with the Savior, they try to destroy the Church by emphasizing the human weakness of those who serve the Savior. During the past Year of the Priest, however, we bowed our heads before the Majestic Lord and thanked Him for the beautiful gift of Christ's Priesthood given to ordinary people. In this gift bestowed upon His servants is included God’s Love of people, His caring for their souls and great strength. Thanks to this Strength, priests are able to dedicate their lives for the glory of God and for the salvation of the people. Here are some examples of this dedicated service: On Sunday, May 30 at 3:00pm we will have a rare opportunity in our church to experience a wonderful celebration, the "First Mass" celebrated by Fr. Albert Karol Osewski. Fr. Albert, after arriving here from Poland, prayed in our church and joined the youth prayer group Oaza. As a talented young person, he could have chosen any career and money, like many other young people who come to the USA. He, however, decided to enter the seminary. After many years of studying, Fr. Albert, a Franciscan, was ordained to the Priesthood on May 15, 2010 by the Archbishop of the New York Diocese, Timothy Dolan in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. He will be working with the spiritually and materially poor wherever Christ, the Great High Priest, directs him. We extend our sincere congratulations on the occasion of his ordination and assure him of our prayerful support. May the Good Lord protect him and lead him along this difficult path of his priestly mission. We encourage all the faithful to participate in this First Mass, after which Fr. Albert will bestow upon us a special blessing, which only a newly ordained priest can share with the faithful. Also, there will be an opportunity to greet him in the school auditorium and enjoy some refreshments. Sunday, May 30 will also be a special day for us as we will have the unique opportunity to celebrate the golden jubilee of priesthood of our parishioner, Fr. Edmund Gutowski. On this day, Fr. Edmund Gutowski, CM, will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 9:00am for the graces received during the 50 years since his ordination into priestly life and ministry. After his ordination he worked in the missions where he was sent by the Savior because it was there that he was needed. Some of us may not know him but he is always part of us, since he is a member of this parish since birth. I am sure he prays for all of us who have made this our place of worship. We extend to Fr. Ed our best wishes and assure him of our prayerful support. May the Good Lord grant him many more years in ministry and carrying out his priestly mission. In this beautiful Year of the Priest, God has bestowed upon us many special graces, and among them the gift of time to give thanks to God for good priests. In our missionary family of St. Vincent DePaul, and in particular the Province of New England, there are many anniversaries of priesthood which must also be recognized. One such anniversary is that of 60 years in priesthood (yes, sixty years!) which will be celebrated by Fr. Julian Szumilo, CM who at some point ministered in this parish, who was also Provincial Superior in our Congregation. Fr. Julian is currently living in St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Enfield, CT, where until last year he was still carrying out the duties of chaplain, and even today he assists the Sisters and the new chaplain. Fr. Julian, being a faithful priest devoted to Christ and the Blessed Mother, spends much time in deep prayer. For the 60 years of wonderful and total devotion to priesthood, we thank him and God the Almighty. 55 years of priesthood is being celebrated this year by Fr. Wacław Hlond, CM who served in this parish at one time and was a Provincial Superior in our Congregation. Fr. Wacław, even at age 81, continues his active ministry and for years has been responsible for the pastoral care of Polish-speaking and assists with the English-speaking parishioners at St. Joseph's Parish in Ansonia, CT. For the extensive and active 55 years of pastoral life, and for total dedication to the priesthood, we thank God and Fr. Wacław. 45 years in priesthood is being celebrated this year by Fr. Joseph Wisniewski, CM, who also ministered in our parish for a period of time. For many years he ministered in the mission group of the Congregation, preaching at missions and retreats, listening to confessions, and administering sacraments in many parishes. Fr. Wiśniewski is currently a vicar in the St. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Greenpoint and frequently comes to our parish for pastoral assistance. Thank God for 45 years of active pastoral work, for his faithful priesthood and kind heart. A 40th Anniversary of Priesthood is being celebrated this year by Fr. John Sledziona, CM, who often visited our parish and conducted retreats. He was a former Provincial Superior of the Congregation. Fr. Sledziona, was a teacher and director of St. John Canty University in Erie, PA and the Catholic high school in Concord, NH. Presently he works in the Diocese of Manchester, NH where he is responsible for spiritual training at the seminaries in the diocese. Fr. John is responsible for the program which prepares men for permanent deacon ordination and is responsible for those already ordained deacons. Fr. John helps with pastoral work at the parish in Concord where he helps our priests from Poland adjust to working in the local church. For his priesthood we thank God, and for Fr. John we wish an abundance of God's graces and strength to fulfill his many duties. 25 years in priesthood is being celebrated this year by Fr. Canon Thomas Machalski, a priest in the Brooklyn diocese who is well known by our parishioners. He is a friend of the Missionaries and a friend of our parish. He cares for Polonia. Even though he is a third generation American, he speaks the Polish language well and travels to Poland for various functions. For his anniversary Mass on May 16, Bishop Karpinski from Lublin, Poland was here in appreciation for Fr. Tom's service to Poland and Polonia. Fr. Tom is the pastor of St. Josaphat's Parish in Bayside, NY, and he is the vice-judge of the Metropolitan Court or Tribunal. Fr. Tom was head of the Polish-American Priests Association in the United States and performs a number of other duties. 25 years ago Fr. Tom started his work in Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Greenpoint. For his priesthood we are grateful to God, and we wish him an abundance of God's blessings and strength in future service to God and people. In speaking about jubilarians, it is important to mention other anniversaries connected with priesthood, especially missionaries and religious. Our entrance into religious life begins on the Day of Calling, or when a seminarian makes his first official vow to remain in the Congregation of the Mission and is accepted by the Congregation. Such anniversaries are being celebrated this year by Fr. Joseph Szpilski, C.M. currently working in our parish-60 years. Fr. Anthony Kuzia, CM, pastor of two parishes in Concord, NH joined the Congregation 40 years ago. Fr. Roman Kmiec, CM, presently the pastor of St. Stanislaus B&M Parish in New Haven, CT and worked in our parish at one time, is celebrating 30 years in our Congregation now. Fr. Marek Sadowski, CM, also known to us through his service in our parish and is currently the Treasurer of the New England Province, dedicated his life to Christ 25 years ago. We commend them all to our prayers, so that their priestly life continues to bear abundant fruits in gaining souls for God. Conversions. In prayer, let us remember Fr. George Dabrowski, CM, who will turn 80 in July. In contemplating or speaking about priesthood, let us be fair. Let us notice the good ones and their devotion for the glory of God and salvation of man. Let us look with favor on those who choose service to Christ, the High Priest. And for the weak, for whom it is difficult to always avoid temptation - let us support them with our prayers. 6 MAY 23, 2010 Diocese of Brooklyn - - Christ Jesus, Our Hope Planning Questionnaire During a meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, trustees, parish staff and pastor on May 3, 2010, we came up with the following answers to the suggested questions. The whole document will be available to all parishioners soon and they will be invited to make comments and suggestions in regards to all topics. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF VIBRANCY IN YOUR PARISH? Over the past few years the Parish has revitalized itself as it focused on the significant pastoral services that it provides to the Catholic community of St. Stanislaus Kostka, as well as, to the Greenpoint community as a whole. Additionally, our Parish is not restricted to its immediate congregation, but maintains its significant relevancy to all the faithful who celebrate their Polish Language and Heritage. There are also people of all backgrounds, ethnicity, and concerns who attend St. Stanislaus Kostka liturgical services that are based on the true love of God and under the prayerful stewardship of the Pope. Our traditional parish draws many people who come to worship together as one family of God. Pastoral services include: Thirty-three (33) Masses weekly celebrated by five (5) dedicated Vincentian Priests; daily opportunities for confessions; First Fridays confessions and adorations; many traditional devotions on the occasion of the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Mother; adorations of the Blessed Sacrament; Lenten and Advent parish retreats; weekly children’s masses; Advent and Lenten devotions for children, etc. A CCD Program in Polish and English with over 300 children, Faith Formation program for young adults (8-12+ grades), Faith Formation programs for Adults A vibrant parochial school with over two-hundred sixty (260) students which employs the services of a lay staff with a complement of religious from the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Multiple Children’s and Adult organizations, which include the Krakowianki and Gorale Folk Dance Group, Polish Supplementary School, the vibrant Altar Server Society, The Living Rosary Society, St. Stan’s Athletic League, St. Aloysius Young Men Catholic Club, Our Lady of Fatima Society, Nazareth’s Family Formation Group as well as many others. WHAT IS THE GREATEST STRENGTH OF YOUR PARISH? St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish enjoys the prestige of being a spiritual destination for heads of state and Catholic Church dignitaries, like Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, Governor George Pataki, etc. The notoriety provided a platform to share the Word of God with all who attend the Mass in the presence of these very public figures. The Parish is also the center of many historic celebrations which are important for Poles and those of Polish descent. This is the place where people come to express their joy, to mourn tragedies, to commemorate memorable events, and to find strength during difficult times. St. Stanislaus Kostka is also well known for making the sacrament of Penance available to all. Greenpoint residents as well as Polish-speaking people from the entire New York City area which includes suburban New York come to our church to make regular confession. WHAT ARE THE GREATEST CONCERNS OR CHALLENGES FACING YOUR PARISH NOW AND IN THE PROJECTED FUTURE? The downturn of the economy is a significant concern to our mainly working class congregation. Consequently, the loss of jobs has impacted the contributions to the weekly collections, which in turn impacts the regular maintenance of the parish facilities. The maintenance is limited to critical repairs which are required for effective and safe delivery of our pastoral services. Furthermore, the Parish School is being converted to an academy, however, maintenance of the building and facilities will remain the financial responsibility of the Parish unless the current conversion strategy is reconsidered. After the economy, the other major concern is the changing demographics of the Greenpoint area. An influx of young people who work in Manhattan has not created an increase in those who want to get involved in the spiritual aspects of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish. As a result, the displacement of parishioner residents has contributed to the reduced attendance at daily and weekend Masses. Additionally, the parish has enjoyed the immense benefits of having several energetic religious who are beginning to age. Unfortunately, vocations are at a minimum and, if not addressed, the satisfaction of having a choice of Masses and a selection of Celebrants at St. Stanislaus Kostka will be a thing of the past. WHICH OF THESE CHALLENGES DO YOU FEEL THE PARISH CAN ADDRESS OR HAS BEEN ADDRESSING? HOW? The economy is in a down cycle and will eventually rebound. The parish needs to be in the position to take advantage of the imminent upturn by investing time and resources to adjust its approach to the community which is now in proven demographic transition. The main thrust should be on raising the count of the faithful at all Masses. Masses should be supplemented with choral ensembles and liturgical enhancements to further involve prospective parishioners in our church. Assess the possibility of introducing the Tridentine Latin Mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka to tap into the young adults who are moving toward the Church’s two-thousand year old traditional solemn celebration. The Parish regularly reviews its commitment to the local community. It is critical that St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish be an active part of the Greenpoint community. Regular discussions of the changing demographics have helped to address some of the long-term issues that face the parish. We are open to accommodate the needs of the local residents, specifically, when it comes to their spiritual growth through the liturgy of the Word and pastoral works of the Church. Once the Parish School is converted to an academy, the financial logistics need to be addressed. The expenses incurred by St. Stanislaus Kostka School need to be reviewed and as appropriate need to be equitably reassigned across the aligned Parishes. An ongoing challenge for our parish is to figure out ways to keep younger parishioners engaged in the life of the parish. WHICH CHALLENGES SEEM BEYOND THE ABILITY OF THE PARISH TO ADEQUATELY ADDRESS WITH YOUR CURRENT RESOURCES? The challenge that seems most insurmountable is the worsening state of vocations. A new approach needs to be considered and implemented to ensure robust leadership in our parish and the church in general. Even though we try to encourage the youth to think about the priesthood, or we encourage them to attend Catholic High Schools, or we invite them to participate in the Vocation directed programs sponsored by the diocese and PATRON 7 our religious community, or we give them opportunity to be closer to the altar of Christ and be in the presence of priests on many occasions in nonchurch environment – there are so few youth who respond. In recent years we have had just two vocations to the priesthood from our parish and presently there is one seminarian. All of them will be joining different religious orders. Other challenges are the deteriorating buildings. Some of them are over 100 years old and soon will need considerable attention; consequently, any future upgrades or renovations of any of the century-old structures are very costly. The state of buildings will not draw many lessees. Lack of necessary income will create a pronounced deterioration of the buildings. Another challenge beyond the ability of the parish to adequately address, with the current resources, is to find more volunteers that are needed to run parish programs and administer the needs of the parish. There are many barriers beyond our reach which prevent people from joining in and volunteering their time and talents. People spend more time in their work places because they are afraid of losing their job; computers and cable TV, and different time-wasting gadgets are other factors causing people to have less time to offer our church or other charitable organizations. WHAT ARE YOUR PASTORAL PRIORITIES FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS? The points in question no. 5 provide an overall outline of the parishes pastoral priorities. In summary, the objective is to apply the Parish’s pastoral mandate to the need of the new demographics in the community. The living church should consider all liturgical options to further proclaim Christ’s Word. WHAT MINISTRIES NEED TO DEVELOP OR BE STRENGTHENED IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? The parish has to reach out to all the faithful, especially those in most need of feeling God’s love. The parish needs to foster a faith based ministry for the youth and the aged of our community. This initiative should involve clergy and parishioners, specifically parents, who would provide the positive inspiration of our faith and the benefits of participating in the Holy Eucharist. For example, the expansion of participation in existing choirs as well as investing resources to create new choral societies with the specific goal of promoting the faith through song. For the aged and the sick, provide peace of mind to the affected elderly with a society that would engage the family and provide spiritual support during this time of stress and emotional turmoil. A Liturgical Ministry is being considered to assess the current requirements of the faithful and to ensure that the Church is making every possible effort to reach all the faithful with the appropriate level of effort and resources. We also hope to start new ministries which exist and are successful in other parish communities such as Bible study, Religious Classes for Adults, Bereavement Ministry, Charity groups, and Adult choir. BASED ON YOUR REVIEW OF THE PARISH FINANCIALS, DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE PARISH IS FINANCIALLY SOUND AND SUSTAINABLE FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS? WHAT FACTORS LEAD YOU TO THIS DETERMINATION? The Parish is definitely sustainable for the next five years despite low weekly collections. This opinion is based on a financial review which maintains that moving the Parish School to an Academy would release resources to focus on Parish concerns which includes building up the required reserves that were primarily depleted to maintain the school. We also believe that the process of moving people out of Greenpoint has come to the final point and those who remain will continue to support the parish and build an even stronger community. We also hope that sooner or later our parish will draw more people from the neighborhood with its openness, hospitality and 110-plus year tradition of service. HOW DOES THE PARISH PLAN TO ADDRESS ANY FINANCIAL CHALLENGES THAT EXIST OR MAY EMERGE? The plan is to educate the faithful on the expenses incurred by the Parish, which in turn would promote the responsibility for increased giving. Effectively executing this plan would be critical in order to maintain the buildings that would still fall under the Parish’s responsibility. We also look for possibilities to lease some space in the old building of our school or run some programs there which would bring income to the parish and/or the school. WHAT IS THE STATUS OF ALL PARISH BUILDINGS? The Parish buildings are in use and are in good condition. Regular maintenance is needed and is being performed as needed. Minor repairs are performed instantly when the issue occurs. On many occasions our parishioners are willing to donate their time, strength and material for the needed maintenance or required improvements. ARE THERE ANY CAPITAL REPAIRS TO ANY BUILDINGS THAT YOU ANTICIPATE IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? The main capital improvement is replacing the heating system in the Church and related buildings. The current system is irreparable and needs a capital improvement. Studies are done and talks with different groups of specialized companies are continuing. Some funds are available and secured thanks to donations made toward this project a few years ago. DO YOU HAVE ANY BUILDINGS WHICH HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE RENTED OR USED IN AN ADAPTIVE MANNER? IF SO, HOW MANY AND IN WHAT FASHION CAN THEY BE USED? We have total of seven (7) buildings – the church, rectory, convent, old convent, old school, “new” school, and a three family residential building. Two floors in the annex building (old school) are currently being considered as rental space but all other space is currently allocated. HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR PARISH COLLABORATING WITH OTHER PARISHES IN THE FUTURE? With the conversion of our Parish School to an Academy, the Parish will work with the other Parishes aligned with St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy. This would not be the first time our Parish has worked with other Parishes or groups within the community. Collaborating with others is part of community outreach. WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR YOUR FAITH COMMUNITY IN THE COMING YEARS? The hope for St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Greenpoint is to celebrate it One Hundred Twenty-Fifth Anniversary and many, many more anniversaries thereafter of ministering to the Faith Community.
