30 opening out of season and without major publicity or marketing, MUSA attracted over 5000 visitors in its first two months and on visitor satisfaction it has received very encouraging feedback so far. Because admission is free, its success will not be measured commercially through direct income, but it is hoped that the museum will be popular, both with the public and with the critics. It may become the University’s most visited public space; it therefore has a key role in marketing, both directly, in attracting students, and indirectly, in projecting a good image of the University12. With the 600th anniversary approaching MUSA may also be important in the University fundraising exercise that is being planned to run alongside the celebrations. However, MUSA is intended as a permanent, but changing, museum. It is hoped that it will long outlive the 600th anniversary, but to do this, and to justify the support it has received, both from the University and external funders, it must have a wide appeal. Hence, it presents the heritage of the University in the broadest context: as part of the heritage of St Andrews, the heritage of higher education, the heritage of Scotland and the heritage of humanity. STRESZCZENIE Muzeum uniwersyteckie (MUSA): dziedzictwo czego? Niniejszy artykuł rozważa problem „czyje to dziedzictwo”, ukazując proces tworzenia nowego muzeum dla starego, historycznego uniwersytetu. Przedstawia wiele istotnych czynników tego procesu, m.in. problemy związane z lokalizacją i budową, oraz to, w jaki sposób historia i eksponaty będą zaprezentowane przyszłej publiczności muzealnej. Projekt zatytułowany The Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA) jest ważną inwestycją uniwersytetu. Te i inne pytania, wszystkie powiązane z sobą, weszły do procesu planowania muzeum. 12 On this subject: Z.
