Spiritual Reflection
“I want!” “I have to do everything and s/he
doesn’t have to do anything!” “I’m going to be first!”
If we have children, these kinds of words can be very
disturbing to us. We like them to share what they
have with their brothers and sisters. We know that in
the long run, they’ll be the happiest when they share.
We’re called to set the example for them to follow!
How difficult it is for us to succeed in the world. We can
find us working longer and harder in order to get the things we
consider important. One income sometimes isn’t enough.
Sometimes what we want requires two people to work harder
than they should. The relationship between husband and wife isn’t
given the time and attention that’s needed for it to grow. Children
are relegated to babysitters too often and don’t get the attention
they need from their parents either.
Sometimes, too, we can get more if we’re not entirely
honest. Our children can hear of this dishonesty and become
involved in our quest for more things to the extent that they see
our behavior as the way things need to be done. As we
compromise people, even our own family members, to get what
we want, they learn to do the same.
When we’re deeply involved in our quest to succeed, we
really don’t want others to tell us about the values we are
compromising. We sometimes discredit those who live more
simply and give more time to their children and families. We find
that our quest for success doesn’t lead to happiness or fulfillment.
Our competitive nature can often lead to conflict, hurt feelings,
and broken relationships. In the midst of all this, God speaks.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks His disciples what they
were discussing while they were walking down the road. The
disciples didn’t want to tell Jesus because they were ashamed
about discussing who was the greatest.
The advice Jesus have to His disciples is just as valid for
all of us. Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the
last of all and the servant of all.” Jesus goes on: “Taking a child,
He placed it in their midst, and putting His arms around it, He
said to them, ‘Whoever receives one child such as this in my
name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but
the One who sent me.”
The secret to importance, happiness, and peace lies in
serving the needs of those around us. It’s no secret that the most
important people in our lives are the ones who spend time with
us, listen to us, and help us when we need help. The secret to
close relationships also leads to the happiness, peace, and
importance we’d like to have. It’s rare to see someone near death
saying s/he wishes they’d spent more hours working. Our
importance lies in the time we’re willing to spend with those we
love.
It’s not too late. This week we can look at how we spend
our time and evaluate whether we devote enough time to those
things that are really important. We can look, too, at how often
we try to get our own way.
We can also look at the example we set for the children
around us. If they imitated our aspirations, relationships and work
ethic, would they be happy, fulfilled, and important? Have a good
week!

BALI SIĘ GO PYTAĆ
Często ludzie przychodzą do Boga, by Go prosić—
rzadziej, by Mu dziękować, a jeszcze rzadziej, by
Go pytać. Święty Marek w swojej Ewangelii
zaznacza, że uczniowie gdy słyszeli niezrozumiałe
dla nie wypowiedzi na temat męki, śmierci
i zmartwychwstania Chrystusa—bali się Go pytać.
On ukazuje człowiekowi
prześladowanie—to życie w takiej perspektywie
wydawało się im zbyt ciężkie.
Może byli nawet gotowi zrezygnować z dalszej pracy
Apostolskiej. To wcale nie jest takie proste postawić
pytanie Bogu. Niejednokrotnie gdybyśmy usłyszeli
odpowiedź Chrystusa—ona ścięłaby nas z nóg.
Szczególnie pytanie, które narzuca się w chwilach
bolesnych doświadczeń: „dlaczego?”...
Dlaczego młoda matka umiera na raka zostawiając małe
dzieci; dlaczego niewinne dzieci muszą cierpieć;
dlaczego wojny, niezgody, obozy zagłady, itp. ...? Tylko
wielcy ludzie mają odwagę stawiać pytania Bogu
i usłyszeć Jego odpowiedzi, które często zaskakują
i stanowią szok dla pytającego.
W świetle dzisiejszych czytań mszalnych zastanowię się
czy miałbym odwagę postawić Bogu pytanie—czego ON
odemnie naprawdę żąda?. Czy bez szemrania
zgodziłbym się z Jego odpowiedzią?
