Preface
For the forty second time young scientists and Ph.D. students had the opportunity to present their work, to exchange their experience and to discuss the
scientific problems with experienced lecturers during International Symposium
“Breaking Frontiers: Submicron Structures in Physics and Biology”, XLII Zakopane School of Physics, which was held in Zakopane from May 19th to 25th,
2008. The Symposium was dedicated to physics and biology issues studied by
nuclear physics and ion beam methods. It covered four main topics: structure
and properties of low-dimensional materials, physics for medicine and biology, protection of natural environment, and recent technical achievements in
submicron structure investigations.
High scientific quality together with a pedagogical scope presentations of all
invited speakers made the School very successful and useful to young students
and scientists. The School provided both a forum to explore and discuss new
scientific initiatives and possibility to create friendships. The special atmosphere along with tradition and local environment made this event unforgettable for all 70 participants who have represented 11 countries from Japan
across Europe to the United States of America.
This volume covers the current topics related to physics of low-dimensional
systems. All the introductory invited talks and contributions made by young
scientists and Ph.D. students presented in this volume made great contribution
to science. The organizers wish to thank all speakers and authors who made
the effort to present excellent talks and papers. Special acknowledgements are
for students who kept very warm atmosphere during social events giving their
fantastic spirit to the Symposium which has been staying almost the same
since 1963 when the School was organized for the first time.
The generous support of the Symposium by the Polish Academy of Sciences
is highly appreciated.
