The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading that God has chosen the world’s poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God’s kingdom. TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 9, 2012 Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom? - James 2:5 THE MESSIAH FORETOLD Today’s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech impediment is a good example of how much is contained in a simple miracle story. The Greek work mogilalos appears only here in all of the New Testament. It is a technical term referring to someone with a stammer. It is also used only once in the entire Jewish scriptures, in the passage that we read today as our first reading from Isaiah. Clearly, by his choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is doing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had predicted centuries earlier. In fact, Mark wants us to recognize that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, “be opened,” used to describe the restoration of the man’s speech, is another example of a subtle allusion to an earlier prophecy. This time the prophecy in question is from Ezekiel, when he foretells that in the messianic age, “your mouth shall be opened to speak”. The sophistication of Mark’s narrative is further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference. Mark not only draws our attention back to Israel’s prophetic past, he also points to the initiatory practice of his contemporaries by his mention of such things as spittle, touching of ears, and the use of the word ephphatha, all of which were practices incorporated into the early Church’s baptismal ritual. This weeks second collection is for Utilities and Energy. Next weekends second collection is designated for Religious Education Offering. REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 A special program in remembrance of 9/11/01 will be presented in our school cafeteria on Tues., Sept. 11 at 8:45am. Our students, faculty and staff will be joined by members of the military to commemorate this tragic event. The students will offer prayers, read poems and you may view a display recalling the events of that day created by Mr. Charles Walley. Parents and parishioners are invited to attend this patriotic event which will be permanently etched into the history of our country. We thank Sr. Mary Ann and Sr. Jeanne for assisting our students in the presentation of this program. CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION On Thursday, September 13, the candlelight procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima will take place at 7:00pm. We invite parishioners and friends to join in this public display of our faith in the Blessed Mother by praying the rosary. Page 3 ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB The first meeting of the club year will take place on Tues., Sept. 11th in the school cafeteria. This organization was established for the benefit of St. Joseph School students and faculty. The club sponsors and supports class trips, social activities, the school library and the computer technology program. It awards three college scholarships and one scholarship towards tuition for a student attending St. Joseph School whose parent is an active member of the club. Parents of St. Joseph School students are invited and encouraged to join. The club holds monthly business meetings that include a social program and refreshments. We are looking forward to seeing you on Sept. 29th for another fun day! HOLY ROSARY SODALITY The Holy Rosary Sodality has a devotion to the Blessed Mother of praying the rosary every day. Pope John Paul II said that, “by reciting the rosary, we enter into the memories of Mary.” Groups of 20 people say a decade of the rosary every day at their convenience. In this way a full rosary is said every day for a special intention. We need to fill in some decades at the present time. If you would like to become part of the rosary exchange, please call Betty Sabaj (508-943-8570) Lynn Marsh (1-508-963-6608), Sylvia Kitka (508-943-0201) of Sheri Bergeron (508-943-2277. You will receive a card with the decade you are to reflect on for that month. On the first weekend of every month, you will have the opportunity to exchange the card with someone in your group either at Church, at an agreed upon place, or just keep the decade that you have. We will renew this devotion on the first weekend in October when you will be given a card with a mystery of the Rosary and a prayer. MEMORIAL ORGAN CONCERT A complimentary Memorial Organ Concert sponsored by the Holy Rosary Society will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 3:00pm in our Basilica as part of our 125th Jubilee Celebration. Following the concert a light supper buffet will be served in the school cafeteria. All are welcome. Thank you to all who have supported the Knight’s. WORTH TO NOTE A few months ago, a young person in his thirties died in Worcester and did not prepare a last will. This situation complicated his assets and the long arm of the government took over his bank accounts, real estate holdings, 401k’s to try to determine who should benefit from his inheritance. If he had designated his beneficiaries in a will it would be a simple procedure and his family would be the heirs of his estate. Every person who is over the age of 18 should make a last will and it should be placed in a safe location—your home, bank deposit box or in the probate registry in Worcester. A lost will is equal to not having a will. In addition, if you already have a last will it should be updated due to any new circumstances, e.g. have children from a second marriage, or you want to distribute your assets differently. This Jubilee Year presents an opportunity, not only to live out the legacy of our forefathers but to leave a legacy for the Basilica. Regardless of your finances, ten percent of your assets which you usually give to the Church in your lifetime and according to Scripture belongs to God, could be willed to the Church. At the end of life, no one regrets that he/she missed a particular financial gain but a lot of people regret that they left God and the Church out of their life. Let’s leave this world without regrets. 100th ANNIVERSARY OF CHURCH BUILDING The 125th Jubilee Celebration also includes the 100th anniversary of the Church building. It is a great tribute to the small number of immigrants who so generously donated their resources to the Church. When we walk through the Church we learn a lot from that generation. The stained glass window above the redoux, depicting the Ascension, is a donation from the children who collected their pennies for many years to leave us such an ornamental work of art. Many other stained glass windows are donations of various parish organizations which no longer exist. If you look into various anniversary books each one lists a multitude of names of people who supported the Church not only on a daily basis but made visible donations for a particular purpose. On the 150th anniversary, the succeeding generation will notice the names of individuals on various articles in the Church. They will study the Anniversary Book and see the names of dedicated individuals, read the collated bulletins and learn of our accomplishments. Many of us will be gone by then, but the good things given to the Church will live on for eternity. Pope John Paul II stated that a Jubilee celebration should be an unending hymn of gratitude to God who reveals to us the fullness of His mercy and goodness through many dedicated and talented people who were able to translate their faith into good deeds. Page 4 DONATIONS 125th Jubilee Fund -We gratefully acknowledge a most generous gift of $1,000 from Rev. Charles Borowski in memory of his parents and grandparents. St. Stanislaw Kostka was born at the end of December 1550 in the part of Poland known as Mazowsze. His family was affluent and held high positions in church hierarchy and the government. Stanislaw had three brothers and two sisters. His brother Paul characterized his family life by saying we had discipline at home. Our parents emphasized humility and honesty so servants could not complain about our behavior. To be continued next week. ALTAR SERVERS We are now accepting new candidates for altar servers. Boys and girls must have received the sacrament of Holy Eucharist and possess certain qualities of character, self-discipline, sense of duty and commitment to serve. If you would like to register, please contact Fr. Gregory at (508)943-0467 ext. 115. OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We will begin our 2012-2013 religious education classes on Monday, Sept. 10 with a student/parent gathering in our Basilica at 5:30-6:30pm. If your son or daughter has not registered as yet, please do so as soon as possible. Fee is $30 which includes a handbook. Registration forms are available at the entrances to the Basilica or at the rectory. We need volunteers to promote a successful program. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact the rectory. Training will be provided. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS In October we will begin special instructions those who are baptized and would like to join the Catholic Church and those who left the Catholic Church and want to return home. This program is called Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This program consists of several sessions of instructions, most likely on Sundays, in the rectory. In the beginning of Christianity the program was called Catechumenate, where those who were seeking admittance to the Church through baptism were participating in gatherings for instructions. They were admitted only to the first part of the Mass and Liturgy of the Word and after the Creed they had to leave the church. If you wish to be fully admitted to the Catholic Church, please call the rectory for details. Every year thousands of people join the Catholic Church through RCIA. (Jk 2, 5) Bóg jakby ukrywa swoją sprawiedliwość, a eksponuje dobroć – „sam przychodzi, by nas zbawić” (por. Iz 35,4). PAMIĘTAJĄC 11 WRZEŚNIA 2001 Specjalny program upamiętniający wydarzenia z 11 września 2001r. zostanie zaprezentowany we wtorek 11 września w szkolnej kafeterii o godz. 8:45. Do uczniów i nauczycieli dołączą wojskowi, aby wspólnie wspominać tragiczny atak terrorystyczny. Uczniowie zaprezentują przygotowaną z tej okazji akademię. Do udziału w uroczystym i patriotycznym zgromadzeniu zapraszamy rodziców i parafian. Stanisławowi Kostce, którego wspominamy we wtorek 18 września. Jest on patronem dzieci i młodzieży KONCERT ORGANOWY W niedzielę 23 września o godz. Webster. Zapewniamy szkolenie. Osoby dorosłe chcące przyłączyć się do Kościoła Katolickiego prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym.
