Chromodynamika kwantowa: grupa SU(3) Co trzyma kwarki związane w hadronach? Teoria z symetrią cechowania oparta na grupie SU(3) (lub SU(Nc)): ur u = ug ub każdy ui jest czteorokomponentowym bispinorem Diraka. Lokalna symetria SU(3): q(x) → q 0(x) = U (x)q(x) gdzie U (x) jest macierzą unitarną 3×3 o wyznaczniku 1. Jest sparametryzowana Nc2 −1 = 8 rzeczywistymi parametrami.
