Jewish Culture Festival Poster Exhibition
20 years of Festival history captured in posters, year by year. The posters are the
work of artists like Rafał Olbiński, Lech Majewski, Ryszard Horowitz, Marta Gołąb, Agnieszka Winciorek, and Andrzej Dudziński – for the first time, you can see
them all in one place, in a public space – the kind of space they were designed for.

Workshops
Yiddish Language
Yiddish is the key to the world of the shtetl. Przemek Piekarski and Julia Makosz
introduce the basics of the language, and teach basic expressions and the elements of written Yiddish for six days. After this short but intensive course, you
will be able to hold simple conversations and sing popular songs as taught by
Urszula Makosz.
Hebrew Language
A course in modern Hebrew for beginners. The goal is to introduce students to
the basics of the language used by today’s Israelis.
Hebrew Calligraphy
An encounter with the fine art of making letters, but also with the origins of
specific words, the 22 letters of the alphabet, and finally words and phrases that
possess both a real and a mystical significance. The calligraphy workshops are
a lesson in the secrets of copying the black letters of the Torah…
21
Jewish Paper-Cutting
A series of workshops that give you a chance to learn about the history, types,
decorative motifs, and techniques of paper cutting – an art that was very popular
among Jews. Everyone can take part. All you need is a dash of manual dexterity
and a touch of patience.
Discovering Kazimierz. Towards Israel – artistic workshops
This year’s artistic workshops introduce participants to the diversity of Israel’s
culture through the visual arts. Participants will make postcards, an installation
titled The Tower of Babel, and a Portrait Gallery. The works will be shown at the
Kupa Synagogue after the Festival.
Workshops for Children: Israel
This year’s workshops for the youngest Festivalgoers will be dedicated to Israel
– a trip to that colorful country, presenting not only its most important historical
landmarks, but also its history. The children will share what they learn in the
workshops in a performance on the last Sunday of the Festival.
Klezmer Basic – Klezmer workshops for beginners
An introduction by musicians to the melodies, styles, rhythms, and varieties of
Jewish instrumental music. Participants should be able to play simple melodies
by ear.
Drumming Workshops
For everyone who wants to delve into sounds and rhythms with roots in the
Middle East, Morocco, and India. The workshops are hosted by Shlomo Bar, the
leader of Habrera Hativeet, and his friends from the group, santurist Menashe Sasoon and guitarist Ilan Ben Ami. For beginners and advanced players. Participants
must bring their own instrument.
Jewish Dance
The workshop teaches dance steps for all types of klezmer music, and improvisation to a range of contemporary varieties. After these workshops, names like
freylich, hora, and sher will no longer be unknown, but instead will take the form
of specific combinations of steps.
Hasidic Dance
Lessons in Hasidic dance – the key to understanding the essence of the authentic
joy (simche) that flows from the harmony of music, words, and bodily movement.
A Klyamke Mit A Tir – Yiddish Singing
Yiddish music offers exceptional possibilities for the expression of deeply hidden
emotions, artistic ambitions, joy and wit, and spiritual and political convictions.
Participants will learn splendid songs and melodies, while at the same time exploring ways to express the full force of the music in group and individual performance.
Hasidic Song
Another series of meetings with the eminent Cantor Benzion Miller, who presents the difficult art of cantorial singing and shows how to sing Hasidic nigunim,
and what they express.
Jewish Cooking
In everyday life, Hanna Kossowska is a mashgiach [kashrut supervisor] in Warsaw.
She explains the detailed principles of kashrut, while also sharing her favorite
recipes. Each workshop session concludes with the tasting of the dishes that
have been prepared.
22
Genealogy Workshops
Our family histories are a treasury of self-knowledge – which is what makes
learning about the basic techniques of genealogical research rewarding: the principles that apply, and the places to search for information about one’s own family
history.
Free Jazz Workshops
“My workshops are about Eastern European Jewish music. During the sessions,
I will try to present my own personal version of this music, transposed for the
electric guitar. Together with the participants, I would like to reflect upon the
place of Jewish music in the contemporary world.” – Raphael Rogiński
Sightseeing
The Synagogues of Kazimierz
The Kazimierz urban complex, the only one of its kind in the world, was entered
in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978. Its genius loci stems in part from the
fact that 7 of the 8 synagogues now standing in Kazimierz are situated practically
next door to each other. We invite you to visit them and see some of the most
precious Jewish prayer buildings anywhere.
In the Footsteps of the Cracow Rabbis
A new way to explore Kazimierz – not from one landmark to another, but in
the footsteps of the great rabbis who lived here and shaped Diaspora Jewish
spirituality.
A Walk Around the Site of the Cracow Ghetto
On the 65th anniversary of the liquidation of the Cracow ghetto, we invite you
to see the places in the Podgórze district that were the scene of the tragedy that
befell one in four prewar Cracow residents, and people from many nearby towns
and shtetls.
A Tour of the Remuh Cemetery
The Remuh Cemetery is one of the most important necropolises of Jewish Galicia and all Europe – not only a unique architectural landmark, but also the resting place of outstanding Cracow Jews who lived, created, and loved over the
centuries.
A Tour of the New Cemetery
The largest Jewish cemetery in Cracow is also one of the most important necropolises in the city – the resting place of the people who were the pride not only
of local Jewry, but also of Cracow and Poland.
In the Footsteps of Balaban
In his prewar guidebook to Jewish Cracow, Majer Bałaban described the most
important and significant places – the majority of which survived the war and,
while they may now serve different functions, continue to highlight the greatness
and significance of our city’s Jewish history.
Touring the Cracow Jewish Cemeteries
The two Cracow cemeteries bear witness to the changes wrought by time. They
share deep roots in tradition – and it is specifically the traditional meaning of the
gravestone symbolism, and the lives of the people resting beneath them, that
Monika Krajewska will talk about.
Other Cyclical Events
Jazz Klez Sessions
Nocturnal music-making in Alchemia has become a Festival tradition. As always,
the master of ceremonies is Paul Brody, accompanied this year by Oy Division
from Israel, with different Festival musicians sitting in each night to create nonpareil improvisation.
23
Please Respond
“Please Respond” is a community artistic project by Erica Lehrer, Hannah Smotrich, and Stephanie Rowden. We invite you to stop by the café in the Landau
House and share your feelings, opinions, memories, and reflections connected
with the Festival, and also with the Polish-Jewish heritage of today’s Cracow. In
this way, you will make a mark of your own presence in Kazimierz, at the Festival, and it will become part of a great installation of memories. It will also be an
image of the Jewish Culture Festival – not the Festival that follows the schedule
of events, but the real Festival – that one that all of you create.
Theater
The Cinnamon Shops
A production based on the stories that Bruno Schulz published in the book of the
same title. It is the story of Father – his fascinations, oddities, and eccentricities.
A story seen through the eyes of the Son – the Son as little boy, but also the Son
as an adult man, writing his reminiscences of Father.
Chi Chi Bunichi
Each of us remembers some songs from childhood. What does it mean when we
can no longer understand those songs? Is it a sign that we are out of touch with
our own past? Daphna Attias finds a recording of songs, made at intervals of many
years by her grandmother and her father. Because she does not know Ladino, the
language in which the songs are sung, she cannot tell what they are about. This is
what spurs her to try to recreate a language that nobody speaks anymore. The
result is a performance in which various genres intersect, from theater through
dance, to music.
