Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. May God keep you safe! Daniel Guziec SPC Jeffrey Foerster Bryan Callan Robert Peregrino Roses to those on the Way of the Cross It remains our sincere hope that through word and deed, education and example, we young and old one heritage or another, would all come to know that our care for Our Church — His really, is done through small and not so small gestures of help and support. As a source of hope and inspiration it is our intention to publish those names in print who have done outstanding work in the course of the week to “plant a rose” so to speak along the way as we carry the cross in the glory of the victory “He” won. Our part though small can and does grow. We might need to see the proof. The names are both a thank you and attempt to have lots of roses where ever “the cross” is. The Midnight Mass tomorrow will begin our celebrations of Christmas. We have prepared ourselves spiritually and we also made sure that our church is decorated and ready, so we may have a deeper experience of this great mystery of our faith—the Word becoming flesh, God incarnating His love for humanity by sending down His Son to redeem the world. I wish to thank all the volunteers who came to clean our church and the chapel and to get the decorations ready for Christmas. May the Newborn Child bestow many graces on you and your family. The time you have given to our parish is a donation of your love for the Church. Thanks to your dedicated contribution, Christmas will ‘shine’ and become more meaningful to all of us, allowing us to see God’s grace in each face as our spirituality grows and deepens during the Christmas season. Please don’t be like the rest of commercial society and finish celebrating Christmas the day after, which happens so often in stores, streets and even in some homes, where Christmas decorations are quickly taken down. For Christians, Christmas Liturgy and cycle starts on Christmas day and ends on a day of Baptism of the Lord, which this year falls on January 13. In the Polish tradition the Christmas cycle ends on February 2, the Presentation of the Lord. By participation in the Church Liturgy and preservation of the beautiful Christmas traditions and customs we will demonstrate the true meaning of Christmas the living presence of Christ Jesus among us. Dear Parishioners and visiting guests, along with my fellow priests, the Missionary sisters working in our parish and the Parish Council, I wish that your heart would be a welcoming place for a newborn Child. May he radiate his joy and blessing on your life so it can become better, more beautiful and happy and the Christmas spirit of kindness, goodness and integrity fulfill your everyday life. Merry Christmas! Fr. Jason Torba Pastor December 23, 2007 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page Five WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO ME …. Ashley Litalien, Grade 3, Holy Name School, Welland, Canada: "We celebrate Christmas because Jesus, Our Lord and Saviour was born! Because he was born he made a sacrifice of death so we could live forever. So Christmas is a time to remember Jesus' love for us. It is a time that we can show our love for one another. We get together with family and friends. Even though I like the food and gifts, Jesus is the reason for the season." Diana Conidi, Grade 8, Notre Dame School, Niagara Falls: "From as far back as I can remember Christmas was one of the happiest celebrations. Decorating the tree, wrapping the presents and setting up the nativity set under the tree remind us that this is a special time and that the real reason to celebrate is the birth of Christ. As I got older and became a teenager I realized that the true meaning of Christmas is about love and coming together with your friends and family as Jesus often celebrated with his family and friends. If this is like your Christmas then you are lucky because many teenagers don't see the difference between the religious holiday and the commercial holiday. We celebrate with my aunts, uncles and cousins by going to church, eating special food and spending time together as a family. That helps us to be in the Christmas spirit which means we should be grateful for all the things God has given us." Heather Crole, OAC, Notre Dame High School, Welland: "To me Christmas is about gathering with family and friends to relax during the break and revel in the spirit of giving and sharing. It's the perfect time to step back from study, work and other activities to enjoy a peaceful snowfall, a favourite Christmas carol, all the traditional foods especially the homemade cookies, and listening to the fascinating stories told by older relatives of family experiences in the old days. Most important is the awareness that Christmas is about giving and definitely not about receiving. Jesus was born and died for us, and we give of ourselves for others out of the goodness of our hearts not because it's the right thing to do but because as human beings we are compassionate and sympathetic towards one another. When we share ourselves we really receive the things that are more important than any gift we open on Christmas morning." Tim and Janet Nohara: (parents of 3 young children Adelaine, Paul and Evan) " As parents of a young and growing family, we try to impress upon our children the tremendous meaning of Christmas how incredibly blessed we are to receive the gift of the Incarnation, Jesus, Himself. We have tried to make this Jubilee year of celebrating Christ's birth one of special significance for our family by rekindling some old traditions of praying the rosary together and joining the children for their weekly school Mass. This has strengthened our relationships with each other and with God. A new activity which we expect will become a tradition is to join with close friends and family to put on a Christmas concert at a retirement home. We try to impress upon our little ones that sharing these God-given gifts of voices, music and time with the elderly is really doing what God wants us to do, and that all of these acts of charity offered to family and others are gifts we can give back to Jesus for His birthday." "The Golden Compass" Many of the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago have called or e-mailed our offices to ask for information on the recently released movie, "The Golden Compass," as well as the series of books on which the film is based, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Both the movie and the books contain aspects that are deeply troubling to those who profess the Catholic faith. Consequently, a number of Catholic websites have offered in-depth reviews of both the books and the film. In order to better inform Catholic parents on whether the books and film are suitable subject matter for Catholic children or young adults, we offer two judicious evaluations from the Diocese of LaCrosse and Zenit news service. To read the documents, please log onto Archdiocesan web site at www.archchicago.org and click on FAQ about "The Golden Compass" Diocese of La Crosse and What Every Parent Should Know About "The Golden Compass" - Zenit News Service . Niech sam Nowonarodzony Chrystus obdarzy licznymi łaskami Was wszystkich, którzy poprzez poświecenie swojego czasu przyczyniliście się do upiększenia celebracji tych świąt w naszym Kościele. Poprzez uczestniczenie w liturgii Kościoła w tym okresie i zachowanie pięknych bożonarodzeniowych tradycji i zwyczajów pokażemy innym prawdziwą istotę przeżywania tych świąt - żywą obecność Chrystusa wśród nas. Drodzy Parafianie i Goście, życzę Wam wraz księżmi wikariuszami, siostrami i całym zarządem, niech serce każdego z Was będzie miejscem, w którym zatrzyma się i spotka z przyjęciem Nowonarodzony Syn Boży. Niech to Boże dziecię opromieni Wasze życie blaskiem swego błogosławieństwa czyniąc je bardziej doskonalszym – lepszym, piękniejszym i szczęśliwszym. A ten nastrój świąteczny oraz atmosfera wzajemnej życzliwości i dobroci wypełnia Waszą codzienność. Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia! Ks. Ileż to pięknych wspomnień niesie ta uroczystość. Ile z tych kolęd my współcześni potrafimy zaśpiewać, w ilu z nich potrafimy wyrazić Dziecięciu stan naszego ducha? A to przecież także część naszej polskiej tożsamości, wartość, którą powinniśmy przekazać następnym pokoleniom. Krótkie grudniowe dni mijają szybko. W podobnym tempie miną kolejne święta Bożego Narodzenia. Kolejne w naszym życiu i w życiu przyszłych pokoleń niech rodzą w naszych sercach ciepłe uczucia: bezpieczeństwa, miłości i pokoju. Ks. Reynolds ([email protected]) I didn’t realize it at the time, but I got a taste of Christmas several months ago at the Lake View Presbyterian Church in Chicago . It was a hot day without a snowflake, Christmas tree, or Salvation Army bell-ringer in sight. That’s probably why I missed the whole Christmas thing. Per usual, I just wasn’t paying attention. But now that there are snowflakes, Christmas trees and bell-ringers at every turn, I can better make the connection between the birth of Light and Love that we celebrate in a couple of days and what transpired all those months ago. I was there that day for a memorial service in honor of Dennis Dilno, who had died in New York City several months earlier. I never knew Dennis--had never even met him--but I know his partner Jeff, and I wanted to pay my respects. Leaving the church a few hours later, I understood that with Dennis’ passing, another good man was down, and that a glimmer of light and love had gone out of the world. The guy was an amateur photographer, and much of his work was on display throughout Lake View Presbyterian. Impressive. I know a little bit about photography, and I can tell you this: the camera captures the moment, but it’s the shooter who tells the story. Several people in church told their own stories with artistic performances of song and dance in celebration of the life now gone, like one person’s rendition of a Sweeney Todd favorite: "Nothing’s gonna harm you/ Not while I’m around…" and I got the clear message throughout it all that Dennis will be missed by many. As one who often gets caught up in the sweep of minutia of everyday life, I was taken to learn that Dennis made a point of staying in touch with those he cared about. One person said that her time with Dennis was every Sunday night by phone from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. For somebody else, it was every Tuesday morning at 10:00. Constancy is rare these days; Dennis seems to have embodied it. At least that’s the impression I got over the course of the afternoon, with the pastor bringing the message home clearest to me. She said that we hear often in the psalms the word "steadfast" in reference to God. She said that the idea of absolute faithfulness--of steadfastness--which the psalmists experienced with God, many people had experienced with Dennis. Then she said something that’s really stayed with me: "In a world that is consumed with consumables… to be up next to someone who is enduring is holy… sacred…a gift from God." Today is the fourth Sunday of Advent. Amidst all the snow and lighted trees and bell-ringers, we’ve been waiting upon the Lord for nearly a month now, and Bethlehem is just around the corner. "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’" God can be with us in our relationships as well, for we are called to see Jesus in--and to be Jesus for--one another. In a world that is consumed with consumables, may we be ever steadfast in Love. Merry Christmas.
