TEENAGERS magazine interviewed young people from different countries and asked them
about interesting beliefs and superstitions popular in their countries.
‘If you drop a coin into a fountain, you can ask for three wishes to come true. But, if you pick
up any coins from the fountain, you`ll have bad luck … forever. I wonder if you can stop
thieves in this way.’
Pablo, 16, from Italy
‘The red colour is a symbol of luck and happiness. So, during the Chinese New Year, we
decorate everything in our houses in red. It`s the same for weddings. The bride must wear red
shoes, and the bridegroom also needs to have something red, for instance a red belt or a red
tie.’
Lu – Chen, 15, from China
‘ In Ireland, there are several superstitions connected with luck. They divide days into lucky
days and the days when you have to be really careful to avoid bad luck. According to a popular
superstition, the first day of the year and the first day of the week are considered to be the
luckiest. The unluckiest days are Fridays. For that reason it`s not advisable to start a journey, or
take any important exams, or do anything important on a Friday.’
Sheila, 17, from Dublin
‘For the Japanese number four is an unlucky number because of its pronunciation. It is
pronounced the same as the word “death”. In fact, it is really hard to find any ‘fours” in Japan.
There are no number four houses or flats, not even floors number four.’
Mia, 14, from Tokio
‘In Russia, we are superstitious about mirrors. For example, people say that if you forget about
something and leave it at home when you go out and then you have to go back it means you`ll
have bad luck. The situation changes if you look
in the mirror when you go back, then you`ll have good luck. People also say that it`s not a good
thing to break a mirror or look in a broken mirror.’
Viera, 16, from Moscow
