Its monuments are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The exhibition presents photos of excavation works conducted by the Jagiellonian University archaeological team since 2011. Locating an agora from the 4th century B.C. is one of the greatest achievements of the Polish scientists. Exhibition creators: prof. dr hab. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka, Robert Słaboński Exhibition curator in Muzeum Śląskie: dr Renata Abłamowicz Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice is a cultural institution of the Self-Government of the Silesian Voivodeship and the Ministry of Culture and the National Heritage Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 PHOTOPLASTICON MIASTO – MASA – MASZYNA (METROPOLIS – MASS – MACHINE), THAT IS, KATOWICE AS THE MOST FUTURISTIC CITY IN PRE-WAR POLAND october– december 2016 3.10–31.12.2016 For many visionaries coming to Silesia from various regions of Poland in the 20th century, it was Katowice which was to become the embodiment of the new image of the epoch – the time when experimentation in all spheres was a must. Words were released from the pressure of meaning, convention was fought against on principle, the dictates of movement and multiplication techniques inspired creative pursuits both in architecture and in daily life, the limits of imagination were pushed ever further by means of the photographic medium. Thus, the seance composed of 48 stereopairs will present not only the city, but also the region as a semi-futuristic symphony in honour of modernity, where a machine line, a building volume, or even work of human hands itself became an aesthetic determinant. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 EXHIBITIONS MONUMENTAL BEAUTY STANISŁAW HILARY POPŁAWSKI (1886–1959) DANI KARAVAN VIVAT INSITA REFLECTION / ODBICIE / ָאּפשּפיגלונג WŁADYSŁAW GRYGNY UNKNOWN 17.09.2016–17.09.2017 17.12.2016–26.03.2017 The presentation of Stanisław Hilary Popławski’s creation is not only a monographic exhibition, but also a reminder of an artist somewhat forgotten today, representing the trend of new classicism. The exhibition of works by Popławski, who was highly esteemed for his technical mastery, is also an attempt to show how important tradition is in shaping what is defined as avant-garde. For the contemporary viewer, a new interpretation of his art may be an inspiring experience, but also a return to traditional, non-avant-garde art. Exhibition curator: Andrzej Holeczko-Kiehl Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 PAINTED WITH LIGHT ICONS FROM THE COLLECTION OF MUZEUM ŚLĄSKIE IN KATOWICE AND MUZEUM ŚLĄSKA CIESZYŃSKIEGO IN CIESZYN 17.06–31.12.2016 Art brut is a mysterious phenomenon, in which creation becomes a duty rather than the meaning of life. The artist may lose touch with reality, but never with his urge to create, which determines his life. Władysław Grygny is an example of such creative personality. Weird, isolating himself from the society, on the verge of subsistence, he has created expressive and colourful images for a few dozen years, never showing them to anyone, with the idée fixe of a message he is obliged to convey to the world. The fact that his paintings find their way to museum and private collections in Poland and abroad is outside his awareness. Exhibition curator: Anda Rottenberg Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. Dobrowolskiego 1 Single Artwork Gallery LIVE NATURE ALBUM EXHIBITION OF WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEMBERS OF THE KATOWICE CHAPTER OF THE POLISH WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION 5.11.2016–29.01.2017 On exhibition in the rooms in al. W. Korfantego will be the most interesting icons, arranged thematically. As Orthodox Christian art enjoys great popularity, it is the second time the icons – which became part of the museums’ collections following confiscation by customs authorities to prevent their being smuggled abroad – have been exhibited. Together, the two museums have the largest collection of Orthodox Christian religious objects in Silesia. The 110 photographs presented here portray the uniquely colourful and rich world of flora, imposing landscapes and animals in their natural habitats, in places very distant and hardly accessible for us, but also in ones we pass by every day. The works by members of the Silesian Chapter of the Polish Wildlife Photographers Association, created within the last 20 years and presented in the exhibition, have been awarded and displayed at numerous national and international photography competitions. W. Korfantego 3 21.11.2015–31.12.2016 From September 2016, the central hall space is at the disposal of Dani Karavan, an Israeli sculptor, who, inspired with Hamlet and Silesian history, has created a monumental installation combining themes of poetry, philosophy and hard miner’s labour. Muzeum Śląskie became a place of reflection on human nature and the literal entering the installation created by the artist, foster self-reflection and gaining insight into oneself. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. Dobrowolskiego 1 level -4 Exhibition curator: Sonia Wilk CANON AND REMIX OF SPACE IN THE POLISH THEATRE OF THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURY. JÓZEF SZAJNA 19.11.2016–26.02.2017 The exhibition Canon and Remix is a part of a wider project realised by the Centre for Polish Scenography. One of its elements is a series of exhibitions presenting the ”canonic” output, comprising original projects selected by the demiurges of the 20th century theatre, together with a remix of their works created by an invited artist of a younger generation. The selection may be conducted based on the cohesion resulting from direct inspiration, personal contacts, master-disciple relationship or conscious rejection and negation. The current exhibition presents Józef Szajna’s painterly works and an installation by Olga Warabida – an artist pursuing animation, graphics and multimedia scenography design. Dobrowolskiego 1 GALERY OF DEPOSITS – WOJCIECH KOSSAK, JACEK MALCZEWSKI 28.10.2016–22.01.2017 The presented works by Wojciech Kossak and Jacek Malczewski, artists who left behind an enormous output, are kept in the style characteristic for each of the artists, but at the same time allow the public to familiarise themselves with the part of the artists’ creation which has not been exhibited in museum rooms yet. Both painters created large sized works, renowned in history, but also less known and nevertheless interesting paintings such as commissioned portraits. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T.
