I AM NO LONGER A DOG 31.03–10.09.2017 Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. Dobrowolskiego 1 / 40-205 Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 / 40-005 Katowice tel. 32 779 93 00 / fax 32 779 93 67 e-mail: [email protected] www.muzeumslaskie.pl Opening hours Tuesday–Sunday: 10.00–20.00 Monday closed Tuesday admission free The exhibition confronts the works by the most uncompromising outsiders, treating art as a form of protest, with the works of counterculture artists, representing the punk scene and other alternatives to mainstream creativity. The exhibition shows the wealth of links between outsider art and the alternative culture achieved by various media i.e. painting, video, poster, photography or music. Works by selected artists from the collection of Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej are complemented by works belonging to Muzeum Śląskie (Włodzimierz Czerwa, Maria Wnęk) and works by independent artists (Zbigniew Libera, Robert Brylewski and others). A screening of films made for amateur film clubs, created by workers belonging to hippie and punk subcultures, enriches the exhibition. The Academy starts with a presentation of the initial fascination of artists with the new medium, perceived as experimental at the time. Subsequent meetings will be devoted to its development up to modern times, when video or multimedia installations have become a common form of artistic expression, they are now treated the same as other media. A short outline of video-art history, including its most significant artists and events essential to its development, will be presented by experts in the field: leading artists, art historians and theoreticians. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. When there were more marriageable girls at home, fathers vied with one another in ideas for an evening devoted to dancing and making acquaintances. In the arena of carnival leniency, under the watchful eye of guardians, the young were supposed to strike a chord with each other, which significantly contributed to the marriage arrangements made in middle-class circles. The scene presented in Kaiserpanorama reveals the background of the time of carnival heart magnetism, beginning with the New Year. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 CREATIVE SHIFT. Dobrowolskiego 1 EXHIBITIONS PIOTR SZYMON PHOTOGRAPHY 22.01–25.06.2017 A man shown in his everyday life, joy and sorrow, on the verge of the sacred and the profane, at a moment existentially significant for him – this is the main theme of Piotr Szymon’s works. The exhibition of his pictures presents three basic thematic and formal threads in the artist’s output, that is pilgrims, the Roma people, a portrait and an artistic experiment. Such circles of interest determine the manner in which he presents mankind – always in the centre of the photographic stories he creates. Systematic returns to selected themes are interpreted here as a creative attempt to solve the puzzle that is human life and to understand the values sought by human beings. MONUMENTAL BEAUTY STANISŁAW HILARY POPŁAWSKI 17.12.2016–26.03.2017 The presentation of Stanisław Hilary Popławski’s creations is not only a monographic exhibition, but also a reminder of an artist who has been somewhat neglected in recent times, represents the trend of new classicism. The exhibition of works by Popławski, who was at the time already highly esteemed for his technical mastery, is also an attempt to show how important tradition is in shaping what is defined as avant-garde. For the contemporary viewer, a new interpretation of his art may be an inspiring experience, but also a return to traditional, non-avant-garde art. Exhibition curator: Andrzej Holeczko-Kiehl Exhibition curator: Ada Grzelewska Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice al. W. Korfantego 3 VLADIMÍR BIRGUS PHOTOGRAPHY 25.03–3.09.2017 This exhibition of one of the most widely recognized Czech photographers, journalists and curators comprises works from the years 1986–2016. The exhibition sums up the artistic oeuvre of Birgus, it also shows the evolution of his output from documenting reality to divergent thinking. In the 1970s and 1980s, he created a collection of black-and-white photos depicting Czechoslovakian society. The works were generated on a foundation of the tradition of socially oriented art, drawing on the practice of the photographic essay. The formula of subjective photography was adopted at a later stage, this allowed him to introduce his own creative elements to documentary forms. In his joyful multicoloured paintings he depicts genre scenes set in the Silesian landscape, in which the characteristic conical slag heaps, high stacks, pithead towers and red familoki buildings dominate. His expressive personality and characteristic painting put him at the same level as Teofil Ociepka and Erwin Sówka. During his life, he has painted hundreds of paintings and received awards in many competitions. He has also been the subject of press articles and documentaries. Paweł Wróbel’s paintings have found their way into both museum and private collections. Exhibition curator: Sonia Wilk Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. Muzeum Śląskie becomes a place of reflection on human nature and the literal upon entering the installation created by the artist, to foster self-reflection and gain an insight into oneself. Dobrowolskiego 1 level -4 WOJCIECH KOSSAK, JACEK MALCZEWSKI 28.10.2016–22.01.2017 The presented works by Wojciech Kossak and Jacek Malczewski, artists who left behind an enormous output, are in a style characteristic for each of the artists, but at the same time they allow the public to familiarise themselves with the part of the artists’ creation which has not yet been exhibited in museum rooms. Both painters created large sized works, renowned in history, but also less well known and nevertheless interesting paintings such as commissioned portraits. Muzeum Śląskie, Katowice ul. T. JÓZEF SZAJNA 19.11.2016–26.02.2017 The exhibition Canon and Remix is part of a wider project realised by the Centre for Polish Scenography. One of its elements is a series of exhibitions presenting the classical output, comprising original projects selected by the creators of the 20th century theatre, together with a remix of their works made by an invited artist of the younger generation. The selection may be conducted based on the cohesion resulting from direct inspiration, personal contacts, the master-disciple relationship or conscious rejection and negation. The current exhibition presents Józef Szajna’s painterly works and an installation by Olga Warabida – an artist pursuing animation, graphics and multimedia scenography design.
