ASCENSION THURSDAY
This coming Thursday, June 2nd 2011, the Roman
Catholic Church celebrates a Solemnity of the Ascension
of Our Lord. It is part of our belief that Christ after His
resurrection has ascended into heaven from where He
shall come again on the last day to judge the living and
the dead. The Ascension Thursday is a holy day of obligation. Masses on that day are as follows: 9:00 am in the
lower church (in English) and 7:30 pm in the lower
church in English, Polish & Spanish.
OUR FIRST PARISH DEACON: FRANCIS PITTIE
We are happy as a parish community to welcome
in our midst Mr. Rev. Francis Pittie and his wife
Mrs. Sylvia Holder-Pittie. Deacon Francis has received
the Sacrament of the Holy Orders from bishop DiMarzio on Saturday, May 28th, 2011, at OL of the
Angles Church in Bay Ridge. Deacon Francis will
serve & preach at the Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 29th, at 10:45AM. Social at St. Joseph
Center will follow. All are welcome to attend.
CONGRATULATIONS
On Thursday, May 19th, Mrs. Ana Watanabe was
commissioned by Bishop Daily as a lay minister for
our parish. Ana completed a three-year program of
study and prayer sponsored by the Pastoral Institute
of the Diocese of Brooklyn. As a parish community,
we congratulate Ana who will continue to be involved in various ministries of our parish.
CONFIRMATION
The following students, who attend our Religious
Education Program, will receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation on Monday, June 6th: Wendy AquinoGonzaga, Christopher Badillo, Luis Cadena, James
Campbell, Cecilia Cisneros, Marco Gonzaga, Gabriel
Lopez, Edwin Martinez, Jimmy Martinez, Aldo
Salas, Michael Torres-Membreno, and Anayeli
Vasquez. The Mass will take place at Our Lady of
Refuge Church (Foster and Ocean Aves.) at 7:30PM.
All parishioners are invited to attend.
Due to a new mandate by Bishop DiMarzio, parishes with fewer than 35 candidates for Confirmation
must join with a neighboring parish to celebrate the
Sacrament. Both St. Rose and O. L. of Refuge Parishes did not have 35 candidates and that is the reason we will celebrate together.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading - The people of Samaria accepted the word
of God preached by Philip; they received the Holy Spirit
(Acts 8:5-8, 14-17).
Psalm - Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm
66).
Second Reading -Act with gentleness and reverence
toward all, so that when you are maligned those who
defame you will be the ones put to shame (1 Peter 3:1518) or 1 Peter 4:13-16.
Gospel - I will not leave you orphans, but will come to
you (John 14:15-21) or John 17:1-11a.
FEAST OF FAITH
The Collection: A Privilege
As the altar is prepared for the celebration of the
Eucharist, the collection is taken up. In the early church,
this part of the Mass must have been something to behold,
as the people suddenly began to move, bringing forward
to the deacons and priests freshly-baked bread and fine
wine. Then, after the Eucharistic Prayer, that same
community came forward again in the Communion
procession, and they received back the very gifts they had
given, now transformed into something infinitely more
precious than bread and wine: the very Body and Blood
of Christ.
Beginning around the eleventh century, it became the
custom for people to present money instead of bread and
wine, and the procession of the faithful gradually
disappeared (it survives in the liturgy of Holy Thursday).
But the meaning is the same. We continue to bring the
fruit of our labors and to offer them freely to God. And
God continues to transform them into Christ. It is through
our generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure that our
parishes can preach the gospel, reach out to the sick and
the imprisoned, and celebrate the sacraments.
THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE
“What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine
somebody coming up to you and asking you that question.
Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping
to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or
aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today
tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this
question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time
thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today
give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for
us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because
we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another
Advocate through Christ to remain with us always. No
matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope
to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason
for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us
through the power of the Spirit.

6 NIEDZIELA WIELKANOCNA
Filip przybył do miasta Samarii i głosił im
Chrystusa. Tłumy słuchały z uwagą i skupieniem
słów Filipa, ponieważ widziały znaki, które czynił. Z
wielu bowiem opętanych wychodziły z donośnym
krzykiem
duchy
nieczyste,
wielu
też
sparaliżowanych i chromych zostało uzdrowionych.
Wielka radość zapanowała w tym mieście. Kiedy
Apostołowie w Jerozolimie dowiedzieli się, że
Samaria przyjęła słowo Boże, wysłali do niej Piotra i
Jana, którzy przyszli i modlili się za nich, aby mogli
otrzymać Ducha Świętego. Bo na żadnego z nich
jeszcze nie zstąpił. Byli jedynie ochrzczeni w imię
Pana Jezusa. Wtedy więc wkładali Apostołowie na
nich ręce, a oni otrzymywali Ducha Świętego.
Dz 8,5-8.14-17
Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: Jeżeli Mnie
miłujecie, będziecie zachowywać moje przykazania.
Ja zaś będę prosił Ojca, a innego Pocieszyciela da
wam, aby z wami był na zawsze - Ducha Prawdy,
którego świat przyjąć nie może, ponieważ Go nie
widzi ani nie zna. Ale wy Go znacie, ponieważ u was
przebywa i w was będzie. Nie zostawię was
sierotami: Przyjdę do was. Jeszcze chwila, a świat
nie będzie już Mnie oglądał. Ale wy Mnie widzicie,
ponieważ Ja żyję i wy żyć będziecie. W owym dniu
poznacie, że Ja jestem w Ojcu moim, a wy we Mnie i
Ja w was. Kto ma przykazania moje i zachowuje je,
ten Mnie miłuje. Kto zaś Mnie miłuje, ten będzie
umiłowany przez Ojca mego, a również Ja będę go
miłował i objawię mu siebie. J 14,1-12
REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ NIEDZIELNYCH
W Samarii, gdzie Filip głosił Dobrą Nowinę,
z opętanych wychodziły duchy nieczyste, a wielu
sparaliżowanych i chromych zostało uzdrowionych.
Ewangelia ma moc przemiany – dlatego dziś
modlimy się, żeby misterium paschalne przemieniało
także nasze życie. Przyjmowanie sakramentów,
słuchanie słowa Bożego – to wszystko otwiera
człowieka na moc Najwyższego. Tak rodzi się w nas
wiara, nadzieja, miłość – dobro, którym można się
dzielić z innymi.

RAZÓN DE NUESTRA ESPERANZA
“¿Cuál es la razón de tu esperanza?”. Imagina que
alguien se te acerca y te hace esa pregunta. No “¿qué es lo
que esperas?” o ¿qué esperas hacer?”. No; no se trata de
los deseos de poseer cosas o de aspiraciones en la vida,
sino “¿por qué tienes esperanza?”. Hoy Pedro nos dice
que debemos estar dispuestos a responder esta pregunta.
A decir verdad, pocos son los que se dedican a pensar por
qué tenemos esperanza. Por suerte, las Escrituras de hoy
nos ofrecen la respuesta. Esperamos porque Cristo sufrió
por nosotros, a fin de que podamos venir a Dios.
Esperamos porque sabemos que, en el Espíritu, Dios nos
concede otro Defensor en Cristo que permanecerá con
nosotros por siempre. Sin importar lo que podamos
esperar, o lo que esperamos poder hacer, siempre
debemos saber y proclamar la razón de nuestra esperanza:
la presencia de Dios en Cristo con nosotros por el poder
del Espíritu.

FIESTA DE LA FE
La profesión de fe
Toda persona cree en algo de manera profunda. Como
cristianos, manifestamos el conjunto de nuestras creencias
en un escrito que se desarrolló durante el Siglo III de la
historia humana. En el año 325, doce años después de que
se dejó de perseguir a los cristianos, se convocó a una
reunión de los obispos en la ciudad de Nicea, actual
Turquía, reunion a la que se le llamó Concilio de Nicea.
Algunos de los obispos asistentes aún llevaban en sus
cuerpos las marcas dejadas a causa de la tortura por haber
proclamado con valentía su fe en Cristo, por haber vivido
de manera heroica su fe cristiana. Durante esta reunión
escribieron el “Signo”, que ahora llamamos Credo Niceno,
es buena parte del Credo que proclamamos durante los
domingos y las solemnidades. La segunda parte, por
decirlo así, se escribió en otro Concilio, el de
Constantinopla (actual Estambul, en Turquía, en el año
381). El texto escrito a partir de estos dos concilios es
nuestro Credo o “Símbolo niceno-constantinopolitano”, en
honor a los dos Concilios. Este símbolo o profesión de fe,
puede hacerse también mediante la renovación de las
