the Oklahoma Tornado Disaster/2013 Disaster Recovery.
All funds collected will be forwarded to Catholic Charities

HOPE AND LIFE
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The
first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom
the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the
widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had
died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was
the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the
family name by the son was equal to immortality. A
widow whose only son has died could lose all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring
the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised
from the dead when he experienced the conversion and
call from God that he describes in today’s second reading.
What are Christians called to do today? We may not
be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle
hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a
persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly
and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the
Good News.
Today we return to using the green vestments of
Ordinary Time on Sundays. Changing colors give a sense
of the progress of faith through the seasons of life. For
centuries, the number of colors and the reasons
underlying them were left to local custom.
Over time, we settled on six colors to express the
character of a day or season: white, red, green, violet,
black, and rose. Black is seldom seen these days, replaced
by white or violet. Rose, really a dusty pink shade,
appears at most twice a year. What does the color green
suggest to you? Green is new growth, olives, evergreens,
glistening emeralds, ripening pears, and fields at high
summer. It suggests renewal, healing, fertility, peace, and
harmony. In medieval Europe, green was the favorite
color for brides! Did you know that drivers of green cars
are the least likely to be stopped for speeding? Is it
because of their own feelings of harmony and well being,
or because law enforcement officers are filled with
serenity when they see a green car whiz by? Take out a
paint chart today and marvel at the many hues and names
of green.
The Church figured it out centuries ago: color really
matters.

10 NIEDZIELA OKRESU ZWYKŁEGO
Po tych wydarzeniach zachorował syn tej kobiety,
będącej głową rodziny. Niebawem jego choroba tak
bardzo się wzmogła, że przestał oddychać. Wówczas
powiedziała ona Eliaszowi: Czego ty, mężu Boży, chcesz
ode mnie? Czy po to przyszedłeś do mnie, aby mi
przypomnieć moją winę i przyprawić o śmierć mego
syna? Na to Eliasz jej odpowiedział: Daj mi twego syna!
Następnie, wziąwszy go z jej łona, zaniósł go do górnej
izby, gdzie sam mieszkał, i położył go na swoim łóżku.
Potem wzywając Pana, rzekł: O Panie, Boże mój! Czy
nawet na wdowę, u której zamieszkałem, sprowadzasz
nieszczęście, dopuszczając śmierć jej syna? Później
trzykrotnie rozciągnął się nad dzieckiem i znów
wzywając Pana rzekł: O Panie, Boże mój! Błagam cię,
niech dusza tego dziecka wróci do niego! Pan zaś
wysłuchał wołania Eliasza, gdyż dusza dziecka
powróciła do niego, a ono ożyło. Wówczas Eliasz wziął
dziecko i zniósł z górnej izby tego domu, i zaraz oddał je
matce. Następnie Eliasz rzekł: Patrz, syn twój żyje! A
wtedy ta kobieta powiedziała do Eliasza: Teraz już
wiem, że naprawdę jesteś mężem Bożym i słowo Pańskie
w twoich ustach jest prawdą.
1 Krl 17,17-24
Jezus udał się do pewnego miasta, zwanego Nain; a
szli z Nim Jego uczniowie i tłum wielki. Gdy zbliżył się
do bramy miejskiej, właśnie wynoszono umarłego jedynego syna matki, a ta była wdową. Towarzyszył jej
spory tłum z miasta. Na jej widok Pan użalił się nad nią i
rzekł do niej: Nie płacz! Potem przystąpił, dotknął się
mar - a ci, którzy je nieśli, stanęli - i rzekł: Młodzieńcze,
tobie mówię wstań! Zmarły usiadł i zaczął mówić; i
oddał go jego matce. A wszystkich ogarnął strach;
wielbili Boga i mówili: Wielki prorok powstał wśród
nas, i Bóg łaskawie nawiedził lud swój. I rozeszła się ta
wieść o Nim po całej Judei i po całej okolicznej krainie.

REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
By być uznanym za proroka, potrzeba czegoś więcej
niż pięknych i porywających słów. Eliasz przekonał o
swym prorockim powołaniu wdowę z pogańskiej
Sarepty, wskrzeszając jej syna; Jezusa nazwano
„wielkim prorokiem” również po wskrzeszeniu – gdy
przywrócił do życia młodzieńca z Nain. W momencie
chrztu także my otrzymaliśmy udział w prorockiej misji.
Aby ją wypełnić, nie musimy dokonywać wielkich
cudów - wystarczy, że będziemy świadczyć o Bogu i
Jego obecności w naszym życiu. Tam, gdzie jest
prawdziwy prorok, z pewnością zrodzi się w ludzkich
sercach wiara w Boga żywego.

de la iglesia en Newkirk Avenue. El precio es $40 por
persona, pero Bally dará 20 dólares a la llegada (por favor,
no traiga niños). Por favor traiga una identificación con foto.
ESPERANZA Y VIDA
Las Escrituras del hoy nos cuentan la historia de dos
viudas. La primera lectura relata la difícil situación en la
que vivía la viuda con la que el profeta Elías se quedó y el
Evangelio cuenta la historia de la viuda de Naín, en cada
una de estas historias cada viuda el hijo único de ellas
murió. En la cultura de esos países en ese tiempo, el hijo
era el sustento para la viuda y quien además continuaba la
descendencia familiar que era igual a la inmortalidad. La
viuda cuyo único hijo hubiera muerto perdía toda
esperanza.
Elías y Jesús son los restauradores de esperanza; ellos
devuelven la vida a sus hijos. San Pablo, metafóricamente
hablando, revivió de la muerte a la vida cuando él se
convirtió después de la llamada de Dios de la que él habla
en la segunda lectura.
¿A qué están llamados los cristianos hoy en día?
Quizá no podemos revivir de la muerte, pero quizá
podemos reanimar la esperanza de un padre o una madre
soltera. Quizá no podemos convertir a un perseguidor
como Pablo, pero si abiertamente hacemos vida el
Evangelio en nuestras vidas, podríamos tocar una vida
con la Buena Nueva.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El día 9 de junio del año 1597, falleció el jesuita José
de Anchieta proveniente de las Islas Canarias, España.
Este santo “apóstol de Brasil” fue beatificado en 1980
gracias a sus grandes esfuerzos humanitarios, literarios y
evangelizadores en Brasil. Llegó a Brasil en 1553 donde
aprendió Tupí, el idioma de los nativos. Enseñaba a los
indígenas, evangelizándolos con la doctrina cristiana y
educándolos en historia, filosofía y medicina.
Eventualmente fundó el Colegio Jesuita de São Paulo de
Piratininga donde tuvo la audacia de educar, junto a los
hijos de los nativos, los hijos de los portugueses. Para este
esfuerzo escribió muchos libros y manuales, cosa que le
mereció ser el primer escritor en Brasil.
Además de ser un escritor prolífico, este misionero
dedicó su vida a predicar el Evangelio en Brasil, país que
cruzó a pie, fundando pueblos y escuelas para los
indígenas cristianos. Estos le llamaban el “santo volador”
por la velocidad con que caminaba. Su celo por el
Evangelio lo motivaba a seguir caminando. Como dice el
profeta Isaías: “Que hermosos son los pies del que trae
buena nuevas” (Isaías 52:7).
