GIVING TREE
Our annual "Giving Tree" Advent project will begin
next weekend, November 19th & 20th. We invite you to
take a tag from the tree and purchase the gift indicated. We ask that all gifts be left unwrapped. Attach the
tag to the outside of the package and place the gift near
the tree by Sunday, December 4th. The gifts will be distributed to homebound members of the parish, Catholic
residents of Belsky House (UCP), homeless people served
through CHIPS, and children whose mothers are in
prison. All gifts should be new and unused. This project
has been most successful in the past and we are confident
that our generous parishioners will again respond with
love and enthusiasm.

PERSEVERE IN OUR DAILY WORK
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In our world and culture, where hard work is valued so
much (we even give over a whole day on the civic
calendar to celebrate labor) and our “busyness” seems to
escalate continually, Paul’s admonitions to the
Thessalonians seem a bit obvious. But even in our lives
today, when we have more and more devices to save time,
and still seem to have less and less of it, people yet find
ways to be busybodies in the midst of all their busy-ness.
In Paul’s day, some members of the Christian community
were being idle because they knew the Lord was returning
in glory very soon. Why bother to work? So they turned
their attention to meddling in the lives of others. Theirs
was a rather complacent “I’ve been saved” attitude in the
face of the great tumult of the end times described by
Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel. These days, we have no
such potent notion of the Lord’s imminent return, but
Paul’s message, which has an echo both in Malachi and
Luke, is still pertinent for us. We must keep on doing our
daily work, and persevere in it, consecrate it all to the
Lord, and tend to being faithful until the time of his
return.
With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the
quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from
their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of
England, they were religious dissenters who suffered
penalties for not participating in the worship life of the
established
church.
The
Catholics
established
monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to
assure the vigor of their faith’s intellectual and spiritual
life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with
similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were
unable to adapt to Dutch ways.
There were Catholics who made a similar colonial
journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord
Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a
Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a
proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named
Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta
Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of
this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his
father’s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom
for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the
poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship.
From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and
Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom
so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first
colonists in 1634.

Gdy niektórzy mówili o świątyni, że jest przyozdobiona
pięknymi kamieniami i darami, powiedział: Przyjdzie
czas, kiedy z tego, na co patrzycie, nie zostanie kamień
na kamieniu, który by nie był zwalony. Zapytali Go:
Nauczycielu, kiedy to nastąpi? I jaki będzie znak, gdy
się to dziać zacznie? Jezus odpowiedział: Strzeżcie się,
żeby was nie zwiedziono. Wielu bowiem przyjdzie pod
moim imieniem i będą mówić: Ja jestem oraz: Nadszedł
czas. Nie chodźcie za nimi. I nie trwóżcie się, gdy
posłyszycie o wojnach i przewrotach. To najpierw musi
się stać, ale nie zaraz nastąpi koniec. Wtedy mówił do
nich: Powstanie naród przeciw narodowi i królestwo
przeciw królestwu. Będą silne trzęsienia ziemi, a
miejscami głód i zaraza; ukażą się straszne zjawiska i
wielkie znaki na niebie. Lecz przed tym wszystkim
podniosą na was ręce i będą was prześladować.
Wydadzą was do synagog i do więzień oraz z powodu
mojego imienia wlec was będą do królów i
namiestników. Będzie to dla was sposobność do
składania świadectwa. Postanówcie sobie w sercu nie
obmyślać naprzód swej obrony. Ja bowiem dam wam
wymowę i mądrość, której żaden z waszych
prześladowców nie będzie się mógł oprzeć ani się
sprzeciwić. A wydawać was będą nawet rodzice i
bracia, krewni i przyjaciele i niektórych z was o śmierć
przyprawią. I z powodu mojego imienia będziecie w
nienawiści u wszystkich. Ale włos z głowy wam nie
zginie. Przez swoją wytrwałość ocalicie wasze życie.

Zawsze jest za co Bogu dziękować. Może dlatego własnie
amerykańskie Święto Dziękczynienia (Thanksgiving) z
łatwościa jest akceptowane przez rzesze emigrantów. Z
powyższym, zapraszamy Państwa na uroczystą Mszę w
czwartek, 24-go listopada, o godz. 9:00 rano. Podczas
Mszy poświecimy bochennki chleba, które w sposób
symboliczny przypomną nam o bożej opaczności dla
przybyszów i tułaczy w trudnym, Nowym Świecie…
We Mszy świętej, w aklamacji po przeistoczeniu,
powtarzamy słowa: „I oczekujemy Twego przyjścia
w chwale”. Pod koniec roku kościelnego teksty
liturgiczne akcentują perspektywę ostatecznego
przyjścia Chrystusa na końcu czasów. Perspektywa
„końca świata” nie jest dla chrześcijan niczym
strasznym, przeciwnie, oznacza spełnienie naszych
najgłębszych pragnień. Przyjście Pana będzie natomiast
bolesne dla tych wszystkich, którzy pokładają nadzieję
w sobie samych i w tym, co zewnętrzne. Bóg nie patrzy
na świątynie przyozdobione pięknymi kamieniami
i darami, ale na świątynie naszych serc, w których
pragnie uczynić sobie mieszkanie.

LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura - Para ellos que temen al Señor, brillará
el sol de justicia con sus rayos de salud (Malaquías 3:1920a).

Segunda Lectura - Pablo habla de su trabajo duro entre
los tesalonicenses (2 Tesalonicenses 3:7-12).
Evangelio - Pero su perseverancia será su salvación
(Lucas 21:5-19).
LA JUSTICIA SANADORA DE DIOS
Una antigua expresión sostiene que las piedras
calentadas por el sol curan. Tal vez. Pero el profeta
Malaquías explica que a aquellos que no encuentran un
lugar para Dios en sus vidas sólo le esperan días oscuros,
sin sol. El profeta nos dice que, a la inversa, el afecto y la
luz de la justicia sanadora de Dios aguardan a aquellos
que temen al Señor. Esa es una noción bastante
consoladora – especialmente ahora durante los días
breves, cada vez más breves, de noviembre. Es la piedra
calentada por el sol, y mucho más.
Pablo, igualmente, nos habla de justicia pero señala
que esta no es algo pasivo. Para ser tratados con justicia,
debemos aportar nuestra parte. Si somos diligentes y
perseveramos, seremos recompensados con y por los
frutos de nuestra labor. Finalmente, Lucas también nos
llama a perseverar – en la fe, esta vez – y nos dice que
nuestras vidas estarán aseguradas en Dios no importa
cómo nos traten nuestros enemigos.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1769 los franciscanos bajo la dirección de fray
Junípero Serra alzaron una cruz en Alta California,
dedicando la primera misión en la zona a san Diego de
Alcalá. Diego, cuya fiesta es el 13 de noviembre, fue un
franciscano del siglo XV. Este santo español nunca fue
sacerdote, prefiriendo servir a Dios como hermano lego
(laico) ayudando a los pobres y cuidando a los enfermos.
Siempre fue un humilde servidor de los demás. Aun
cuando lo hicieron guardián (líder franciscano) nunca
dejo de servir a los pobres, los enfermos y a sus hermanos
franciscanos. Su afán por dar a los pobres las cosas del
convento lo llevaba a esconder sus donaciones en su
manto. Una vez un hermano le preguntó que escondía y el
mintiendo respondió: “rosas”. El hermano insistió verlas
y en lugar de la comida que llevaba a los pobres,
aparecieron rosas y más rosas. La santidad del patrón de
San Diego, California se apoya sobre tres pilares: 1)
solidaridad con los más necesitados, 2) devoción a Cristo
crucificado y 3) evangelizar en unión con la Iglesia.
