Henryk Melcer Hall STAGE I 31 January – 1 February 2010 STAGE II 2–3 February 2010 auditions begin at 10.00 and at 16.00 Rehearsals with the orchestra 4 February 2010 The Concert Hall THE FINAL 5–6 February 2010 auditions begin at 18.00 The Finalists will be accompanied by the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Monika Wolińska THE PRIZE WINNERS’ CONCERT Sunday, 7 January 2010 at 18.00 RULES OF THE COMPETITION I 1. The Polish National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, organised by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, will be held in Warsaw from 31 January to 7 February 2010. 2. Auditions will be open to the public and will be held in three stages. The finalists (Stage III) will be accompanied by the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music Symphony Orchestra. II The Competition is open to pianists born between 1980-1993 who are Polish nationals or foreigners who are / were studying at Polish musical universities. III 1. The participation application form, enclosed with these Rules, should be completed legibly in block letters and mailed (postmarked) no later than 4 January 2010 to: Biuro Konkursów Chopinowskich Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina Pl. Piłsudskiego 9 00-078 Warszawa Poland Supplementary documents will include: a) short biographical note b) reference from the music school / department head (for students) or copy of the music school degree (for graduates) c) copy of document bearing the applicant’s date of birth d) document certifying that a foreign national is / was studying at a Polish musical university (for foreigners) e) record of entrance fee payment The entrance fee of 200 PLN should be paid into the bank account no. 84 1750 0009 0000 0000 0627 9139, indicating the Institute’s name and address (Narodowy Instytut Fryderyka Chopina, Pl. Piłsudskiego 9, 00-078 Warszawa), the applicant’s name and purpose of payment. 2. Applications sent after 4 January 2010 will not be accepted. 3. Applicants will be notified by phone or e-mail of their acceptance or rejection no later than 18 January 2010. The Competition Office will notify applicants of the audition dates during the week preceding the start of the Competition. 4. In the event of the applicant’s resignation the entrance fee will not be refunded. IV 1. Participants are required to register with the Competition Office at the set date. 2. Participants who are not Warsaw residents will not be reimbursed for the cost of their travel and stay in Warsaw. 3. Participants will make their own accommodation arrangements. The Competition Office will not be responsible for the booking of hotel or private accommodation in Warsaw. V 1. Auditions will be held in the alphabetical order of the participants’ names, beginning with the drawn letter. This order will in principle be followed throughout the Competition. 2. In principle not more than fifteen participants will be passed into the second stage and not more than eight into the Final. 3. For organisation and programme related reasons the Competition Office will have the right to change the sequence of a day’s auditions. A contestant may be allowed to perform outside the established sequence, at the end of the auditions, only in the event of his/her illness confirmed in writing by a doctor. Such altered order of auditions will be irrevocable until the end of the Competition. VI The Competition Programme will include the following works to be played from memory: Stage I a) A sonata by Joseph Haydn (a cyclic form in three movements) Two etudes by Fryderyk Chopin, one from each (a, b) group: C major op. 10 no. 1 C sharp minor op. 10 no. 4 G flat major op. 10 no. 5 F major op. 10 no. 8 C minor op. 10 no. 12 A minor op. 25 no. 11 b) A minor op. 10 no. 2 C major op. 10 no. 7 A flat major op. 10 no. 10 E flat major op. 10 no. 11 A minor op. 25 no. 4 E minor op. 25 no. 5 G sharp minor op. 25 no. 6 B minor op. 25 no. 10 One virtuoso etude by any composer (excluding Chopin) Performing time under 30 minutes Stage II Robert Schumann – a piece or pieces of the contestant’s own choosing Fryderyk Chopin – pieces of the contestant’s own choosing (other than those performed in stage I), including an obligatory Scherzo or Ballade Total performing time: 45–50 minutes Stage III – The Final A piano concerto chosen from the following: Fryderyk Chopin: I Piano Concerto E minor op. 11 II Piano Concerto F minor op. 21 Ludwig van Beethoven III Piano Concerto C minor op. 37 IV Piano Concerto G major op. 58 V Piano Concerto E flat major 73 Robert Schumann Piano Concerto A minor op. 54 In the application form the applicant will indicate the exact time of performing each piece. The pieces may be performed in any sequence except the etudes (stage I point 2) which have to be played one after the other. VII 1. The Director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute will appoint Chairman and Members of the Jury as proposed by the Competition Director. 2. The names of the Jurors will be made public. 3. The Jury will work in accordance with the rules approved by the Director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. VIII 1. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute will make available pianos for all contestants to practise. 2. Participants will have the opportunity to test the piano in the Musical University’s concert hall. Participants will receive the date, time and place of test-playing the concert hall piano and of practising on other pianos in the week preceding the start of the Competition. 3. Contestants passed into the Final will have two rehearsals with the orchestra. IX 1. The Jury will submit the list of prize winners to the Competition Director for approval. 2. The Institute will arrange for the laureates to appear in: śelazowa Wola – Chopin’s birthplace The Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź Geneva The United States 3. The list of prize winners including the awarded prizes will be made public. X 1. The Jury will have the right to change by a 2/3 majority the prize category with the proviso that individual cash prizes will be neither lower nor higher than those specified in the Rules. 2. All decisions made by the Jury will be final and incontestable. XI 1. All winners will appear free-of-charge in the prize winner’s concert closing the Competition. The concert will be held on 7 February 2010 in the Musical University’s Concert Hall. An unexcused absence from the above concert will be tantamount to giving up the prize money. 2. The programme of the prize winners’ concert will be established by the Jury Chairman in consultation with the performers. XII The Director of the Competition will make all decisions on organisationrelated matters exceeding the powers of the Jury. His decisions will be final and incontestable.
