Treść modułu zajęć (program wykładów i pozostałych zajęć)
Zajęcia seminaryjne
E-Economy
The transformation from industrial to post-industrial economy influenced all spheres of
social and cultural life, including the spheres of management and business practices.
The new economy, based on the knowledge is strongly mediated by the new
technologies. The aim of the seminar is to understand the role of ICT in the process of
transformation of the economy and provision of necessary tools and skills to
understand and to analyze those changes.
Technology & Society. Problems of the Digital Age
The Internet and related political and social technologies, such as “e-democracy”, “ecommerce” or even “e-education”, are said to undermine traditional hierarchies, class
divisions and disadvantages of distance. Network metaphors, social media and new
communication platforms became the signatures of a new age beyond the hardware
of dictatorship and exploitation. Some cyber-utopians even proposed “the internet” for
the Nobel Peace Price. Nevertheless, in recent time some downsides came into view:
the dangers of cyber-crime, cyber-terrorism and even cyber-war moved up on the
political agenda.
The course will check and demystify some of the most popular illusions about the
Internet and related tech companies. And it will analyse how far the attempts by
states and corporations to control the Internet threaten the much cherished “Internet
freedom” – not only in authoritarian states like China and Saudi Arabia but also in
Western Democracies.
The Social History of Technology
The seminar is devoted to the social history of new media. It focus on the use of
technologies. The new versions of the certain cultural myths (i.e. freedom and eternal
life) that function in the context of virtual reality are going to be discussed.
The order of the classes corresponds the historical narration on the technological
progress in Europe, between the latter half of the 19th century until our times.
The purpose of this seminar is to make the participants familiar with key issues from
the field of media archeology, as well as to widen their historical outlook towards the
practices which came into being in Europe as a consequence of The Second Industrial
Revolution.
