Classes in this module are lectures only (30 hours).
Lectures
1. Introduction to the aspects of information society and information technologies – 2
hours
The importance and role of IT engineers in society. Information Society. Fundamentals of health
and safety while working with a computer and on the campus. Copyrights and patents. Searching
for information in order to self-educate and problem solving. Ethical principles in the academic
community and among the engineers. Different types of word processors. The principles of good
multimedia presentation.
2. Introduction to information storage and processing – 4 hours
Fundamentals of information theory (bit, entropy, measure of information, byte and word). Basic
methods and formats of data in a computer (text, numbers, sounds and images, including colour
ones). Analogue, digital, discrete signals and their conversion. Sampling, quantization, Nyquist
frequency, spectrum, bandwidth, Shannon-Kotielnikov theory and aliasing. Number systems,
representations of real and negative numbers in computers. Fundamentals of the Boolean theory,
logic gates and De Morgan's laws.
3. Introduction to computer hardware - 4 hours
History and expectations of the development of electronic devices (such as Moore's law, the first
computing devices, the Turing machine, von Neumann architecture, the development of personal
computers). Computer memory types and their characteristics. Elements of a computer and its
peripherals.
4. Introduction to computational and programming techniques - 8 hours
Types of operating systems. Time efficiency of algorithms and methods for its measurement. Big O
notation. The types of problems complexity. Travelling salesman problem. Amdahl law. Issues of
parallelisation of calculations, super-linear speedup, flops. Supercomputers in Poland and
worldwide. Clusters, grids, clouds. The basic data structures. Types of databases. Basic principles of
designing user interfaces, including GUI. Different computing and programming environments.
Programming techniques (dynamic memory allocation, object-oriented programming, garbage
collector, code optimisation, testing, work with several computers, teamwork with one computer
and other agile methods). Procedures for the production system. Version control systems. Group
work in IT. Dining philosophers problem. Preparation and implementation schedules. Gantt charts.
Scrum.
5. Introduction to telecommunications, multimedia, human - computer interaction
and IT in finances - 8 hours
IT in stock markets (including Forex) and the analysis of rates and insurances (risk calculation).
CAD. Types of telecommunication networks and protocols (LAN, WAN, client-server, P2P, sharing
resources, Intranet, Extranet, Internet, www, http, ftp, ssh, VPN, ISDN, ADSL, mobile networks,
TDMA, FDMA, EDGE). Network and data security. Methods of hacking. E-commerce. Technology and
multimedia systems (development trends, MPEG, DCT, image coding, 3D video). Multi-microphone
systems. Principles of a successful human-computer interaction. Speech Technology. Touch screens.
RFID and GPS applications in HCI. EEG. Autonomous cars, the trends of HCI development.
6. Test and student presentations - 4 hours
Students will present own multimedia presentations on selected IT topics and will sit a test.
Sposób obliczania oceny końcowej
In order to obtain a positive grade, presence on the lectures is expected (20%), passing final test (50%),
preparing own document in LaTeX (10%) and a presentation (20%).
