FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
There is a Polish adage that states „After Corpus Christi, there is no priest in church.” Naturally, it sounds better in
Polish because it rhymes, and some things just don’t translate well, but that is the gist of the adage. Anyway, this
saying isn’t entirely true, because there will be a priest in church and the also the faithful will be there….This saying can mean that after a strictly-lived, long season of Lent and a not much shorter season of Easter, we rightfully
so think and plan about a period of time, a little longer time of rest than just a long weekend - a vacation. It is
understood, of course, that we are not speaking of a vacation from Sunday Mass or daily prayers…
It has become a custom in America to think that the 4th of July begins the season of vacation. Perhaps it is so,
because after the 4th of July factories are shut down to be repaired, offices cleaned and remodeled, schools
cleaned and remodeled, etc… In any case, many parishioners will take their vacation about this time and let’s hope
their rest will be in the natural environment…
During this year’s vacation let us try to rediscover the analogies between the place we will spend our vacation in –
nature/the world and between the method by which Christ teaches us the Good News –the Gospel… Of course, it’s
not like homework from Religion class, but it may help us to relax and be at peace with nature in prayer. For example, let’s say we look at the sky full of stars… What is so beautiful about this…? That the stars, thousands of
them, seem to be scattered in the sky in artistic disarray? This is what throws us into awe… What if the stars were
placed in straight lines or in some geometric shapes? Wouldn’t we grow tired looking at them? How boring...
Wouldn’t we enjoy the wild forest more than the forest with trees planted in the straight lines? Wouldn’t it be more
pleasant to sit on the grassy shore of a river running in its natural bed than to sit by a river with cemented shores?
But, what has all of this to do with the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel?
Throughout the entire liturgical year we listen to the Gospel…Gospel passages that contain parables, parables
which are scattered throughout the pages of the Gospel - in artistic disarray - and yet they draw our attention because of their simplicity…
Maybe whilst looking at the miraculous world and nature around them, by God’s grace someone will discover that
it is the doing of the same hand which brought the Gospels to life.
Vacation Prayer
Loving and merciful God, watch over me during my vacation and travels. May your angels protect me from all
harm. Help me to see with the eyes of faith your goodness and beauty reflected in all of Your creation. May I
experience your love in those I meet and share with them your message of peace and love. Keep my family and
those I love safe from all harm. And may I return from these days of vacation refreshed and renewed in mind,
spirit and body. Amen.

A Musical Treat This Weekend – “Faustynki” Choir
Please welcome at all our Masses this weekend the young adult choir from St. Faustina Parish in Helenowie,
Poland, called the “Faustynki”. The choir, under the direction of Fr. Jan Smigasiewicz, will sing at all our weekend
Masses, English and Polish.
Living Rosary Circle
Today, as on every first Sunday of the month, the members of the Living Rosary Circle will exchange the mysteries
of the Rosary. You can find your assigned mystery of the Rosary for this month on the sheets at the entrances to
the church. We will pray the Rosary in the following intentions desired by our Holy Father:
Rosary Intentions for the month of July
1/. General Intention: During this month of June, we pray with all our hearts that Christians may contribute to
alleviating the material and spiritual suffering of AIDS patients, especially in the poorest countries. And we also
pray that the World Youth Day taking place in Madrid, Spain this August encourage the youth from around the
world to fashion their lives in Christ.
2/. Missionary Intention: We also pray for the religious who work in mission territories, that they may be
witnesses of the joy of the Gospel and living signs of the love of Christ. And may Christians in the Western
Hemisphere be truly receptive to the action of the Holy Spirita nd re-encounter the freshness and enthusiasm of
their faith in Jesus Christ.

Independence Day
Independence Day reminds us that some years ago there was a struggle in our country situation, that there was a
period of time fought for independence. Every country that is free and independent, logically thinking, knows that
victory was not won without God’s intervention. Hence, every Independence Day, in every free country, calls for
prayers of thanksgiving: first to God and then also to those who gave up their lives so that so that we may now
live in a free and independent country.
It shouldn’t be any different attitude here this 4th of July - it is not only a day of joy and happiness, it is not only a
day that marks “vacation season”, it is, above all, a day of thanksgiving to God from the hearts of all citizens for
the 235 years of independence the United States of America has had and enjoyed.
Probably not many of you know how the people in Poland honored the 150th anniversary of American Independence Day…In 1926, 5 million signatures in Poland were gathered from its citizens to congratulate Americans on the
150th anniversary of their independence. These signatures were combined in 112 volumes and each volume had a
special dedication. The best artists of Poland were invited to make covers for each of these books. The artistic covers were made in different colors of leather, linens and of other local materials.
All 112 volumes were brought to the United States by Leopold Kotnowski, the President of the Polish-American
Treasury Department in Warsaw and the Chairperson of the Committee for the Celebrations of the American Independence Day in Poland in the year of 1926. On one of the volume covers, the dedication reads: “AS A TOKEN TO
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FROM THE SCHOOLS OF POLAND ON THE OCCASION OF THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES”.

Second Collection To Defray Energy Costs
During a meeting with the Parish Financial Committee on June 27th, we have come to the conclusion
that there should be a second collection in our parish taken up every second Sunday of month to
defray energy costs: the cost of electricity and gas being used in our parish buildings every month.
The parish monthly cost for energy use is $4314.32 – this does not include what we pay for on behalf of the school, which is reimbursed to the parish on a monthly basis.
Looking over the weekly collections for January through June of this year, I have come to realize that just a little
more than half the time the collection was over $3000, all the other Sunday collections were below $3000. The
calculations are simple: it takes almost 2 entire Sunday collections to pay for the parish monthly energy costs!!
And what money are we to use in order to pay the rest of our parish bills…?
Dear Parishioners, we realize that your family, if it offers anything at all, gives as much as possible, but at the
same time, each family must also realize that a $1, or even $5, donated to the church 15-20 years ago doesn’t
have the same value today…
We will begin taking up these second collections on the second Sunday of the month beginning with next Sunday,
July 10th. Please be generous during these second collections and maybe, just maybe, you will come to make a
decision to add $5 or $10 more to your weekly offering…? May God bless each of you always!!!

whom a funeral mass was celebrated on June 27th,
2011 in our church. We express our deepest sympathy
to the family of the deceased and pray that the Risen
Lord will bless and strengthen them during their time

grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine

Take A Break
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to come to Him when
we’re burdedned and He’ll give us rest. But even when
we take a break from our work and our everyday
cares, we still need to turn to Him and learn from Him
in order to lighten our loads, to ease our concerns.
Psalm 145 teaches, „The Lord lifts up all who are
falling and raises up all who are bowed down.”
Many of us will celebrate this holiday weekend at the
beach, at a barbeque, or at a gathering with family or
friends. Even in the golden days of summer—or maybe
especially then! - we need to remember the Lord who
comes to us and who gives us the gift of life.
Dear Lord, help me slow down and focus
on what really matters: YOU!

Taste of the Southside
Five Holy Martyrs Parish is planning its first-ever „Taste
of the Southside”. This event will take place on
Sunday, July 24, 2011 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. in the
parish parking lot. All proceeds from this event will go
towards the parish church roof fund.
At this time we are seeking restaurant/food vendors to
be a part of this event. There are many good
restaurants in our area that not everyone knows
about. We would like to provide them with the
opportunity to be a part of our “Taste of the
Southside” to come and present a taste of a few of
their most popular menu items to our parishioners and
our community for nominal prices. At the same time,
the taste-testers will vote on the best dish served from
all the restaurant vendors. The restaurant with the
most votes will be crowned our “Taste of the
Southside” winner, and our Parish will recognize that
restaurant in an ad in our local newspaper. Hopefully,
this will generate more business and notoriety for the
restaurant. The entry fee for a spot in this event is
$110.

interested in participating, or if you would like to help

Jak z tym urlopem?...

Z BIURKA PROBOSZCZA
Polskie przysłowie mówi: „Po Bożym Ciele, nie ma księdza w kościele”. Nie jest to aż tak do końca prawdziwe…, bo
ksiądz w kościele będzie i wierni będą… Ale to przysłowie można również odczytać tak: po dobrze przeżytym
długim okresie Wielkiego Postu i wcale nie krótszego Okresu Wielkanocnego, można zacząć myśleć o urlopie,
wakacjach…. Oczywiście tu nie ma mowy o urlopie ze Mszy św., czy wakacjach bez modlitwy…
W cyklicznym rytmie każdego roku jest też czas na dłuższy odpoczynek, który popularnie nazywamy urlopem lub
wakacjami, czasami feriami… W tym układzie, jest prawdą, że ksiądz ma też prawo do urlopu… ale nie urlopu od
kościoła…
W Ameryce przyjęło się, że dzień 4 lipca, jest jakby dniem rozpoczynającym urlopy…, chyba dlatego, że wtedy
zakłady pracy są remontowane, biura malowane, czyszczone, itd.
Tak, czy owak, wielu naszych parafian będzie prędzej, czy później odpoczywać i daj Boże, na łonie natury.
Chciejmy wtedy, podczas tego urlopu, dostrzegać analogie – podobieństwa zachodzące między Ewangelią, a
naturą, wśród której będziecie odpoczywać. Nie powinno to być jakieś „zadanie z lekcji religii”, ale skutecznym
przeżywaniem urlopu, po prostu dostrzec podobieństwo, jakie zachodzi między światem, w którym spędzać
będziemy wakacje, a metodą Chrystusowego nauczania Dobrej Nowiny – Ewangelią…
Będziemy, na przykład, oglądać niebo gwiaździste i w czym odkryjemy, między innymi, jego piękno? A mianowicie
w tym, że tysiące gwiazd zostało, jakby w jakimś artystycznym nieładzie rozrzuconych na niebieskim sklepieniu
wywołując w nas zachwyt i kojąc naszą psychikę…
Pomyślmy, gdyby tak te gwiazdy tworzyły może jakieś regularne linie lub figury geometryczne, wtedy niechybnie
wywoływałyby mniej zachwytu, a powodowałyby raczej zmęczenie…
Zapewne prawdą jest i to, że lepiej jest wypoczywać na łonie dzikiej natury, w puszczy, kniei lub na leśnych
polanach, gdzie wszystko jest niespodziewaną zagadką niż w lesie, gdzie drzewa są posadzone „pod linijkę”. I na
pewno, chętniej się będzie siedziało nad brzegiem potoku, czy rzeki, której nurt płynie naturalnej oprawie, a nie
nad rzeką, której brzegi są uregulowane betonem…
No właśnie, ale co to ma wspólnego z Ewangelią…? Bo właśnie w niej też, jak gwiazdy na niebie, tak przypowieści i
nauki porozrzucane są w jakimś artystycznym nieładzie i zachwycają nas swoją prostotą, zwyczajnością,
naturalnością i przystępnością.
Może, dzięki łasce Boże, patrząc na te i inne cuda natury, uda się komuś odkryć, że ta sama ręka, która uczyniła
świat i jego cuda, równie napisała Ewangelię. Odczytując cuda przyrody, poznawajmy Ewangelię. Oby tak było!!!
Spoczywajmy w Bogu i z Bogiem.
Chór z Polski u nas
Dzisiaj będziemy gościć z Polski chór “Faustynki”. Chórzystki będą śpiewały podczas każdej Mszy św. zarówno
podczas polskiej jak i angielskiej. „Faustynki” – jest to chór przy parafii św. Faustyny w Helenowie, Polska i jest on
prowadzony przez Księdza Jana Śmigasiewicza. Życzymy chórzystkom i ich Opiekunowi Ks. Janowi pomyślnego
pobytu w Ameryce. Zachęcamy do zakupienia ich wspaniałe nagrania, które można nabyć przy wyjściu z kościoła.
Zmiana tajemnic różańcowych
Trzeciego lipca jest pierwszą niedzielą miesiąca, a więc czas na nowe tajemnice różańcowe. Są one podane przy
wejściach do kościoła. Proszę członków Żywego Różańca o zaznajomienie się nimi przed Mszą św. 3 lipca.
W miesiącu lipcu będziemy się modlić w następujących intencjach Ojca Świętego:
1/ O ulżenie w materialnych i duchowych cierpieniach cierpiącym na chorobę AIDS, szczególnie tym chorym w
krajach najbiedniejszych. I także modlimy się, aby Światowy Dzień Młodzieży, który odbędzie się w Madrycie w
sierpniu, aby zmobilizował młodzież świata do zakorzenienia i odnalezienia swego życia w Chrystusie.
2/ Za zakonników pracujących na misyjnych terenach, aby byli świadkami radości płynącej z Ewangelii i żywymi
znakami Chrystusowej miłości. I, aby chrześcijanie z Zachodu byli prawdziwie poddani działalności Ducha Świętego
i odświeżyli w sobie entuzjazm swojej wiary w Chrystusie.
Serdeczne Podziękowanie
Serdeczne dzięki składam następującym parafianom za ich donację złożone na remont dachu kościelnego: pp. Jan
i Jadwiga Zapolski-$5; pp. Władysław i Zofia Bolbot-$20; Sz.P. Krystyna Ramirez-$27 ze sprzedaży płyt
kompaktowych ze zdjęciami; Sz.P. Stanisław Krózel, właścicel Domu Pogrzebowego „Alliance”-$50; i
Anonimowemu Parafianowi (R.S.)-$100. Wszystkim ofiarodawcom, za ich hojność i dobroć dziękuję z całego serca!
A innych Parafian zachęcam do hojności, bo potrzebne jest mniej jak $8,000 do naszej kwoty docelowej o
$70,000! Wszystko jest w rękach Pana Boga i ludzi dobrej woli.

Dzień Niepodległości Stanów Zjednoczonych
Dzień Niepodległości dla każdego kraju jest świętem całego narodu i przywołuje na pamięć, że kiedyś tak nie
było…, że trzeba było wywalczyć sobie tę niepodległość… Każdy też szczerze myślący naród wie, że niepodległość
nie jest tylko wynikiem bohaterstwa i siły obywateli, ale że poza tym stoi też wiara narodu w Boga, sprawcy
wszystkiego dobrego…
Stąd każdy Dzień Niepodległości, w każdym kraju, wzywa do dziękczynienia przede wszystkim Panu Bogu, a potem
tym wszystkim, którzy dobrowolnie oddali swoje życie, aby tę niepodległość zdobyć.
Nie jest też inaczej w Ameryce, która od roku 1776 cieszy się niepodległością…, bo dzień 4 lipca w Ameryce nie
jest tylko dniem radości, szczęścia, ani też tylko dniem, na ogół rozpoczynającym okres urlopów, ale jest to przede
wszystkim dzień dzięki czynienia Panu Bogu i tym, którzy przyczynili się do uzyskania niepodległości 235 lat temu…
Młodziutkie wtedy państwo Polskie, w roku 1926, wiedziało, co to znaczy być niepodległym państwem, po ponad
120 latach niewoli, wyraziło swoją radość z 150 rocznicy niepodległości Narodu Amerykańskiego. Na tę wielką
rocznicę amerykańską zebrano w Polsce 5 milionów podpisów Polaków gratulujących Narodowi Amerykańskiemu. Z
tych podpisów uczyniono 112 tomów, z których każdy rozpoczynał się inną dedykacją. Do sporządzenia okładek
powołano najlepszy grafików i artystów polskich. Artystycznie zdobione okładki były wykonane z różnokolorowych
skór, płótna i materiałów ludowej produkcji.
112 tomów, z podpisami 5-ciu milionów Polaków, zostały przywiezione do USA przez Leopolda Kotnowskiego,
Prezydenta Polsko-Amerykańskiej Izby Handlowej w Warszawie i Przewodniczącego Komitetu obchodów 4 lipca w
Polsce.
Wszystkim Drogim Parafianom i ich gościom, życzę z całego serca miłego odpoczynku, wspaniałej i bezpiecznej
zabawy i nie zapominajcie być wdzięcznymi Panu Bogu za wszystko.
Druga Składka na Energię
Podczas spotkania z Komisją Finansową doszliśmy do wniosku, że należy wprowadzić drugą składkę, w
okresie letnim – na chłodzenie, w okresie zimowym – na opał. Powodem tej decyzji jest fakt, że
wydajemy miesięcznie na elektryczność i gaz używane w budynkach parafialnych, za wyjątkiem
budynków szkolnych: $4314.32
Przeglądając tygodniowe składki, od stycznia do czerwca br. włącznie, że było tylko 19 niedziel podczas których
składki były powyżej 3 tysięcy, wszystkie inne były poniżej 3 tysięcy. Wniosek prosty, aby zapłacić za elektryczność
i gaz używane w naszych budynkach w jednym miesiącu, musimy na to poświęcić prawie dwie niedzielne składki w
miesiącu. A za co mamy spłacać inne rachunki parafialne, pensje…?
Zdajemy sobie sprawę, że każda rodzina parafialna, jeśli daje…, daje tyle ile może… Ale chyba i też każdy z nas
zdaje sobie sprawę z tego, że dolar, czy nawet pięć dolarów, jakie składaliśmy na ofiarę 15-20 lat temu, dzisiaj nie
mają tej samej wartości nabywczej.
Te dodatkowe drugie składki rozpoczynamy już w drugą niedzielę lipca, tzn. za tydzień: druga składka na
chłodzenie. Bardzo proszę podejść do tej składki z głębokim zrozumieniem potrzeby chwili. Bądźmy hojni podczas
tej i każdej składki, a wtedy kościół będzie chłodzony i zdołamy na czas spłacać również inne rachunki parafialne.
Niech Pan Bóg wynagradza Was stokrotnie!!!

w biurze parafialnym.
Smaki Południowej Strony w Naszej Parafii
Planujemy urządzić tzw. „Smaki Południowej Strony”
na naszym terenie, prawdopodobnie w niedzielę, 24-go
lipca. Różne restauracje będą prezentować swoje
ulubione dania, które będziemy kosztować i oceniać.

planować tego wydarzenia i również zaprosić
