ARCHITEKTURA i NOWOCZESNOŚĆ dyskusja w Como
Będąc następstwem jednej postawy intelektualnej, modernizm objawiał się w postaci różnorodnych efektów dostosowanych do lokalnych warunków klimatycznych, ekonomicznych, społecznych i kulturowych. Modernity avoids superstitions and stereotypes, complexes and ambitions, for it assigns priority to the reason. The use of materials, the construction of architectural form, and all decisions we make and can give reasons for during the design processes – they can be modern. This modern way of thinking can be found in the most distant past, too: timber roof trusses, dams, steam engines, etc. were modern in their time. We can find the roots of modernism; we can track its development throughout the 19th century, define the period of its domination. A sudden passion for the modern movement was immediately spread worldwide. Intriguing enough why such a simple, obvious, and rational an idea waited so long for its protagonists. Modernism spread like the Internet, without emissaries and missionaries, for this idea emerged from the needs of time, it wasn’t imposed by some political power or fed on some political will. This is the reason why modernism has never had one defined centre, a capital. Modernism was progressive for the need of modernity was a common one. If modernity is the ground of modern architecture, style – or fashion, which is worse – will be its end. Being a result of a single intellectual attitude, modernism was embodied in different forms as it adapted to local cultural, social, economical and climate conditions. At the same time – being an international style – it favoured certain forms considered the most appropriate ones falling into intolerant if not totalitarian fashion: considering some solutions superior to all the others it rejected the very modern attitude and contradicted itself. The dictate of forms distinguishes only two types of architecture: fashionable and bad – a trap into which, at certain point, the modern architecture has fallen. While modern attitude acknowledges the supremacy of Reason, rejects intuitional aesthetics and seeks for beauty in the truth of material, fashion in its opportunism and conformism seeks forms and not the essence of things. Modern creative process is an intellectual effort, which gives birth to unique architectural forms resulting from place, technology, applied materials, etc. while following fashion is easier, the results are stylistically uniform and predictable, but it does not give answers to any question. And the question is: is it better to invent processes (which is difficult) or to imitate solutions (which is easy)? Or, perhaps, is it better to promote what is easy (and can be good nevertheless) instead of promoting what is difficult?
