Jelenia Góra – ratusz i herb miasta Klasycystyczny ratusz
Jelenia Góra – ratusz i herb miasta Klasycystyczny ratusz wybudowany został w latach 1744–1749. Jelenia Góra – Town Hall and the City Coat of Arms The Classicist Town Hall was built in 1744–1749. It wasn’t the first Town Hall of Jelenia Góra located in this place. First mentions of the previous structure date back to the 16th century; however, no fragments of that building were preserved, due to numerous fires. The city coat of arms with a red deer against blue and white background, resembling the one presented here, can be found today also on the reconstructed Wojanowska Gate at the junction of 1 Maja Street and Piłsudski Street. Erasmus und Pankratius Wyd.: Männich & Höckendorf, Hirschberg, nie datowana, bez obiegu Jelenia Góra – Church of Sts. Erasmus and Pancratius Built in 1304–1346 as a Gothic basilica, the church was rebuilt and renovated several times. It was partially destroyed in a great fire, which raged the town in 1549. Interior decorations are mostly Baroque in style, dating back to the 18th century. On the right is the main altar by a Norwegian artist, Thomas Weissfeldt. The outer walls contain a collection of over 20 epitaphs and tombstones from the 16th–18th century. Out of these, the tombstone of the daughter of the town commander from the time of the Thirty-Year War deserves special attention. Next to the church is the column with the statue of Virgin Mary, built in 1712, and the memorial statue of John Nepomucen. Monarcha ten wymusił na katolickim, habsburskim cesarzu Józefie I zgodę na zbudowanie „kościołów łaski” na terenie Śląska, a potwierdzono to w układzie w Altranstadt (1707 r.). Dzięki temu dyskryminowani w katolickim cesarstwie ewangelicy zyskali nowe świątynie. Oprócz Jeleniej Góry, „kościoły łaski” powstały między innymi w Żaganiu, Miliczu i Kamiennej Górze. Jelenia Góra – Inside the Church of Elevation of the Holy Cross Lost portrait of Karl XII, the Protestant king of Sweden, is worth attention. The king forced the Catholic, Habsburgian Emperor, Joseph I, to agree for erection of “Churches of Grace” over the territory of Silesia. The agreement was confirmed in the treaty of Altranstadt (1707). Thanks to this treaty, the Protestants, who were persecuted in the Catholic empire, received new temples. Besides of Jelenia Góra, “Churches of Grace” were built e.g. in Żagań, Milicz and Kamienna Góra. Jelenia Góra – Niepodległości Square The postcard presents todays Niepodległości Square (Warmbrunnerplatz) and the perspective view of Bankowa Street (part of the old-time Promenade). The decorative house on the left is the old-time Preußischer Hof hotel, a modern bank since 2005. The Promenade was partially tree-lined; the green belt was destroyed over time in order to make more room for the increasing traffic. str ona 31 Jelenia Góra – plac Niepodległości Po lewej stronie widać dawny dom handlowy Heinricha Thiemanna, a w nim Salon Lnu (Leinen Haus). Hirschberg – Warmbrunnerplatz (Niepodległości Platz) Wyd.: Verlag Carl Klein, Hirschberg, nie datowana, bez obiegu Jelenia Góra – Niepodległości Square On the left is the old Heinrich Thiemann Department Store, complete with the linen salon (Leinen Haus). After the war, the building housed the restaurant “Stylowa” for many years. Just as is the case with many other postcards from the early 20th century, we are str ona 32 dealing here with a manipulated image: the automobile in the center with two people inside was incorporated to make the scene more dynamic, or… to prevent us from seeing some undesired sights on the right of the photo. After 1945, it was renamed to Warszawski Hotel. In the years 1948–1951 Poland offered political asylum to refugees from Greece; many of them settled down in Jelenia Góra. The authorities donated the hotel building to the refugees, who organized a Greek Culture Center there. In the 1980s and 1990s, the refugees began to return to their homeland, leaving the center useless and going to ruin, which led to its demolition in 2001. A spa pool was built here as early as in the 16th century. In 1627 Hans Ulrich Schaffgotsch ordered to dismantle the old, wooden structure, and to build in its place a bathing pavilion in a shape of rotunda. Originally, the pool was lined with timber, replaced by marble tiles soon after the World War I. str ona 61 Sobieszów – zamek Chojnik Jak każdy szanujący się zamek, tak i Chojnik ma swoją legendę. Sobieszów – Chojnik Castle As every respectable castle, the Chojnik castle has its own legend. It is about a beautiful and evil princess Kunegund, who ordered the pretenders to her hand to ride their horses on top of the castle walls. Nobody could survive this; however, one daredevil knight managed to complete the task and rode his horse along the walls. The winner spurned the marriage offer, and Kunegund, unable to stand the affront, threw herself down into precipice. Many picture postcards were published to illustrate this legend. Schmiedeberg (Kowary) Wyd.: Photo-Verlag Wilh. Müller, Herischdorf , nie datowana, bez obiegu Kowary Mining played an important role in the history of Kowary (Schmiedeberg). The beginnings of Kowary reach back to the 12th century. The Thirty-Years War brought an end the prosperity of iron ore mining, and the residents took on to weavery. After the World War II, uranium was mined here for the Soviet nuclear industry. The preserved uranium mineshafts are str ona 92 a huge tourist attraction today and feature an underground radon inhalation room. Kowary is a renowned sanatorium, specializing in tuberculosis treatment. The post-war prosperity was related to the operation of the carpet factory, which has remained one of major employers in the area. Earlier, around 1625, a shepherd’s hut was situated there. In the beginning, cattle pasturage was the occupation of refugees from lower regions, who sought for shelter in the mountains during the Thirty Years War. Most of the shepherds’ str ona 102 huts were transformed to mountain shelters in the 19th century. The organ grinder, standing at the trail, deserves special attention. Porters and organ grinders used to work in the mountains at that time; the tourists’ outfits also differed from today’s standards.
