THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP
The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem,
where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is
the second of three in Mark’s Gospel, and as
usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is
tied to the need for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the
words “child” and “servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of
placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same
awareness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and
Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
And that service might even require of them that they be
“handed over” to death. What would have been—in the culture
of Jesus’ day—an ordinary discussion of social status (“who is
the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the
meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us.
The second collection on September 23 & 30 is for the Fall
Appeal for Catholic Schools. Your donations will be retained
at St. Joseph School for the students use.
CATHETICAL SUNDAY-has been postponed from Sunday, Sept. 23 at 9:30am Mass and rescheduled for Sun., Sept.
30 at 9:30am.
THE ORGAN “PLUS” RECITAL-sponsored by the Holy
Rosary Society will take place on Sun., Sept. 23 at 3:00pm. in
our Basilica as part of our 125th Jubilee celebration. We invite
parishioners and friends to this free concert featuring organist,
William Ness, accompanied by John Whittlesey, baritone and
harpist, Lira Cady. We invite parishioners and friends to join
us for a very special afternoon of entertainment. A light buffet
supper will be served in the school hall following the recital.
The Lottery Raffle drawing will also be on Sunday afternoon.
We are grateful to Roland Malboeuf for his initiative in organizing the artists program for this special event. We also recognize the effort and coordination of Betty Sabaj, President of the
Holy Rosary Society.

125th Anniversary Mass & Banquet-if you are planning to

So far we have approximately 170 attendees and are nearing
the capacity of the Elks Lodge.
The Jubilee Committee-is looking for items of historical
significance to coincide with our 125th Anniversary Celebration. Items such as old photos, organization medals, newspaper
articles or anything pertaining to the history of the Basilica will
be displayed at the banquet. Prior anniversary books will be on
display as they are on file at the rectory. Please give as much
information for the item as possible (i.e.name(s) of persons in
photo, dates, etc.) and label your item with your name and telephone number to ensure it is returned to the proper person(s).

JUBILEE CHALLENGES
Our Jubilee serves as a redefining point in planning for the
future. For several months we had the opportunity to evaluate
our accomplishments—who we are—what we did. With gratitude we recognized many individuals, groups and ministries
who have made this Basilica Family what it is today. It seems
that there is an urgency at this time to develop new strategies,
sharpen our mission and expand the evangelization outreach.
Although the Gospel values are the same, the truth is unchangeable, but it is our obligation to develop a new approach for the
next 25 years. May I ask each one of you to identify new priorities and initiatives in our journey of faith. Perhaps we could
assess the need for additional pastoral services, devotional practices, expand our ministries and develop new plans to reach out
to those who are destitute physically or spiritually, or those who
have lost their faith and as a prodigal son yearning to come
home.
ANONYMOUS RESPONDEE
We received a response card to our 125th Jubilee Banquet in
the collection of Sept. 9 indicating that (1) person would attend.
However, they did not note their name, nor did they enclose
payment of $45. If you think you are the one who returned this
card, please call the rectory during office hours, so we may

ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB-is continuing
their annual membership drive through the month of September. This organization was established for the benefit of St.
Joseph School students and faculty. The club sponsors and
supports class trips, social activities, the school library and the
computer technology program. It awards three college scholarships and one scholarship towards tuition for a student attending St. Joseph School whose parent is an active member of the
club. Parents of St. Joseph School students are invited and encouraged to join. The club holds monthly business meetings
that include a social program and refreshments. If interested,

Christian marriage.

Year of Faith 2012—Youth Kick Off– will take place on

music, an inspiring talk and Eucharistic Adoration. This is a

50/50 Raffle: The Knight’s of Columbus, St. Joseph
Basilica Council #12980, are holding their 50/50 Raffle during

WORK PROGRESS
As the Jubilee Celebration nears, we are intensifying the work
around the Church. The water damage above the St. Anne
confessional was properly addressed. There are several
damaged areas in the side aisle ceiling which must be cleaned
and repainted. The cracked ceiling in the foyer of the main
entrance was cleaned and repainted with a slightly different
color and the marble was also cleaned and refinished. In the
next couple of days we will concentrate our efforts on the front
of the rectory. There is some water damage on the roof which
will be repaired and the corroded paint must be scraped and
repainted to make the rectory presentable for our Jubilee.
The sign will be installed in about a week. There are enough
funds to cover the above expenses from the Jubilee Fund.
However, we don’t have resources to address the heating/
cooling unit, sound system as well as the Jubilee Anniversary
Book. Although the official collection period will at the end of
Sept., pledges will be gratefully accepted to address the
remaining issues. Thank you all for your generosity, caring and
pride in your Parish. May God Bless Your Good Heart!

gdzie ma go spotkać śmierć i zmartwychwstanie.
Ta zapowiedź Jezusowej śmierci jest już drugą
pośród trzech znajdujących się w Ewangelii
Markowej i jest okazją do szczególnego
nauczania skierowanego do uczniów. Dzisiejsza lekcja jest
poświęcona służbie innym. Aramejska gra słów opisujących
dziecko i ucznia pozwala Jezusowi postawić dziecko pośród
swoich uczniów i ukazać je jako ilustrację swojej roli Sługi
Pańskiego. Jezus życzy sobie by jego uczniowie przyjmowali
taką samą, dziecięca postawę w posługiwaniu innym, jeśli chcą
kroczyć Jego śladami. Postawa ta oznacza również, iż i oni
mogą też być wydani na śmierć. To co w czasach Jezusa było
normalną dyskusją nad tym, kto jest większy, stało się okazją
do ukazania prawdziwegoi znaczenia bycia uczniem Pana.

KONCERT ORGANOWY
Jako cześć obchodów Jubileuszu 125-lecia naszej parafii
odbędzie się dziś o godz. 15:00 koncert organowy
organizowany przez Holy Rosary Sodality. Zapraszamy
parafian i przyjaciół do wysłuchania utworów w wykonaniu
Williama Ness, harfisty Lira Cady oraz solisty Johna
Whitlesey. Po koncercie wszyscy uczestnicy zaproszeni są na
niewielki poczęstunek w szkole.
Druga kolekta dzisiejszej i następnej niedzieli będzie
przeznaczona na Fall Appeal for Catholic Schools.

JUBILEUSZOWE WYZWANIA
Przez kilka ostatnich miesięcy rozważaliśmy i ocenialiśmy
nasze osiągnięcia, to kim jesteśmy i czego dokonujemy. Z
radością zauważamy obecność wielu posługujących osób i
organizacji, które poprzez swoją pracę tworzą nasza Bazylikę
taką jaką ona dziś jest. Jubileusz jest również okazją do
spojrzenia w przyszłość i zaplanowania naszych działań. Każde
pokolenie ma obowiązek zrewidowania swoich wartości,
poglądów i potrzeb duchowych w kontekście obecnego czasu.
Wydaje się, że obecnie istnieje nagląca potrzeba do rozwinięcia
i wyostrzenia sposobu realizacji naszej misji ewangelizacyjnej.
Jakkolwiek wartości ewangeliczne są niezmienne to jednak
trzeba nam poszukiwać, odpowiednich do dzisiejszych czasów,
sposobów wdrażania ich w życie. Pragniemy poprosić każdego
z was do zidentyfikowania priorytetów i inicjatyw na następne
25 lat naszej wędrówki wiary. Być może warto przeanalizować
posługę duszpasterską, nabożeństwa i osobiste modlitwy,
rozszerzyć i rozwinąć plany naszego działania, tak by dotrzeć
do tych, którzy cierpią fizycznie bądź duchowo, lub tych którzy
utracili swoją wiarę i są synami marnotrawnymi pragnącymi
powrócić do dom
KOMITET JUBILEUSZOWY
Nadal są dostępne kupony na Loterię Jubileuszową w cenie
$10 za jeden. Losowanie odbędzie się dzisiaj (23 września) po
koncercie organowym.
Formularze spisowe zostały posłane kilka tygodni temu do
wszystkich parafian. Wiele z nich już powróciło, ale ciągle
jeszcze spora liczba parafian nie odesłała wypełnionych
formularzy. Bardzo prosimy o poświęcenie kilku minut na
wypełnienie formularza i odesłania go do parafii. Otrzymany
przez nas formularz jest potwierdzeniem przynależności do
parafii oraz oznaką troski i dumy z bycia członkiem wspólnoty
św. Józefa.
Msza i Bankiet Jubileuszowy - Jeśli planujecie wziąć udział
w obchodach uroczystości jubileuszowych prosimy o jak
najszybsze odesłanie potwierdzenia, które było załączone do
każdego zaproszenia. Prosimy o czytelne wypełnienie
potwierdzeia i załączenie opłaty. Jak dotąd swoją obecność
potwierdziło 173 osoby.

Jubileuszowy
poszukuje
różnorodnych
przedmiotów o znaczeniu historycznym, powiązanych z
Jubileuszem. Mogą to być stare fotografie, okolicznościowe
medale, artykuły z czasopism, lub jakiekolwiek inne rzeczy,
które mogłyby być zaprezentowane podczas okolicznościowego
bankietu. Prosimy dołączyć do przedmiotów tak wiele
informacji o nich jak to tylko możliwe (nazwiska ludzi na
fotografiach, daty etc.), oraz o dołączenie do przedmiotu
waszych danych, tak, byśmy mogli go zwrócić właścicielowi.
Przedmioty prosimy przynosić na plebanię, albo do zakrystii.

ANONIMOWE POTWIERDZENIE
W trakcie kolekty 9 września otrzymaliśmy potwierdzenie
udziału jednej osoby w bankiecie jubileuszowym. Jednakże na
potwierdzeniu nie ma ani nazwiska osoby ani nie została
dołączona opłata. Prosimy tę osobę o pilny kontakt w celu
uzupełnienia danych osobowych, byśmy mogli dokonać
rezerwacji miejsca.
PRACE JUBILEUSZOWE
Przed zbliżającą się celebracją Roku Jubileuszowego zostały
zintensyfikowane prace w i wokół kościoła. Zakończylismy
naprawę sufitu nad figurą ws. Anny. Pozostał jeszcze kilka
miejsc w nawach bocznych, które należy naprawić i
pomalowiać. Przemalowany i naprawiony został sufit w
kruchcie. Także marmury zostały oczyszczone i wypolerowane.
W najbliższych kilku dniach rozpoczniemy prace przy
frontowej częsci plebanii. Potrzeba jest naprawić zniszczenia
zpowodowane przeciekami w dachu, usunąć złuszczoną farbę i
uszkodzone miejsca od nowa pomalować, tak by również i
plebania wyglądała zalezycie na dzień celebracji Jubileuszu. W
najbliższym czasie zostanie również postawiona nowa tablica

St. Joseph Polish Women's Club w miesiącu wrześniu
kontynuuje przyjmowanie nowych członków w swoje szeregi.
Organizacja ta została powołana do istnienie w celu wspierania
Szkoły św. Józefa, jej uczniów i nauczycieli. Obecnie Klub
wspiera szkolne wycieczki, bibliotekę oraz realizację programu
komputerowego. Poza tym uczniowie aktywnych członków
Klubu mogą się ubiegać o stypendia. Zapraszamy zatem

Rycerzy Kolumba. Bilety w cenach $5 za 1 kupon lub $10 za 3
