Zofia Sawaniewska-Mochowa Linguistic and cultural image of Samogitia and Samogitian people in selected written and spoken texts The aim of this article is to present texts written in Polish language, which in many ways verbalize value judgments about Samogitia and Samogitians. The texts vary as for their genres or chronology. Quasi-historical and popular texts (including the entry Żmudź from the nineteenth-century encyclopedias and dictionaries), as well as cliché texts (proverbs, common language expressions) were applied in the research in addition to travel narratives, prose works and poetry. Furthermore, a simple test, based on the associations, was carried out in the group of 62 Polish philology students. Their task was to assign to a Samogitian person their most characteristic features. The respondents were also asked to list these literary works which they most strongly identify with Samogitia and Samogitians. The analysis of the ways of forming the Samogitia concept in the written works is preceded by the study on different understanding and perspective of the territory by the present inhabitants of Lithuania. In accordance with the linguistic criterion, the Samogitia area stretches as far as contemporary Samogitian dialects. Nevertheless, people connected with the gentry’ culture and identifying themselves with the Polish nation, and those of a very good historical memory, would refer to the old Samogitian location to the west of the lower course of the Niewiaża/ Nevėžis River , and without the historical Samogitia, Lauda – land located in the upper section of the river. It is confirmed by the historian Henryk Łowmiański’s studies of the boundary between Samogitia and Aukštaitija/Auksztota till the mid-fourteenth century. The examination of the linguistic formulas and notions included in the texts enabled to extract the following conceptualizations of Samogitia; the ‘former province of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’, the ‘autonomous land, dependent to neither Lithuania nor other country’, the ‘holy land’, the ‘mythical and eternal land’, the ‘country and family land’, and finally, the ‘strange and distant land’ (to the descendants of gentry identifying themselves with Polishness). The most distinguishable and constant characteristics of a Samogitian stereotype, according to the literature and surveyed respondents, are: bravery/ boldness (in the context of the bloody struggle with the Teutonic Knights), devotion, persistence, fierceness and ferocity. Stocky and very strong horses (also called samogitians), or musical instrument, a samogitian horn, playing highly shrill sounds, were the attributes that emphasized the image of a Samogitian warrior and hero. Residents of Samogitian gentry mansions would assign specific resentfulness and vehemence to the Samogitians (more vicious than a snake!), but also phlegmatic approach, simplicity and bluntness, and mental sluggishness. Surveyed students identified the Samogitians with the ethos of national struggle, the homeland defence and associated their characteristics with such works as The Teutonic Knights and The Deluge by Henryk Sienkiewicz and Grażyna by Adam Mickiewicz. Najbardziej charakterystyczne i zarazem stabilne cechy w stereotypowym wizerunku Żmudzina to w świetle literatury i odpowiedzi ankietowanych: waleczność/dzielność (w kontekście krwawych zmagań z Krzyżakami), pobożność, upór, zawziętość, dzikość.
