Monuments and the history of the town A few facts from the past: The first reference to Z³otów which already was a town, comes from the year 1370. During the Swedish Deluge the Swedish troops destroyed the town and the castle built on the island on lake Miejskie (Town Lake). The town belonged to wealthy families: Kocielecki , £abyski, Grudziñski, Dzia³yñski, Hohenzollern. In the year 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, Z³otów became a part of Prussia. Throughout ages Poles, Germans and Jews lived here peacefully together. The inhabitants of Z³otów represented 3 denominations: Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism. One of the most important periods in the history of the town was the interwar period, when the polish people had to fight for the survival of their national identity. 1945 Z³otów finally returned to Poland. The town was many times on fire, thats why buildings older than those from the 19th century can hardly be found. What remained is the old, characteristic system of streets and squares, now subject to heritage protection.
