October - Respect life Month
This is truly the work of God. God cannot leave the crime unpunished: from the ground
on which it has been spilt, the blood of the one murdered demands that God should render
justice (cf. Gn 37:26; Is 26:21; Ez 24:7-8). From this text the Church has taken the name
of the ‘sins which cry to God for justice’, and, first among them, she has included wilful
murder. For the Jewish people, as for many peoples of antiquity, blood is the source of life.
Indeed ‘the blood is the life’ (Dt 12:23), and life, especially human life, belongs only to
God: for this reason whoever attacks human life, in some way attacks God himself.

“CATHOLICS COME HOME “ RETURNS
WITH MAJOR MULTI-MEDIA EVANGELIZATION APPROACH
The Archdiocese of Chicago announced today, August 12, 2010, that the
evangelization initiative, Catholics Come Home Chicago, would return in
December for a second year on local television stations and in parishes
throughout Cook and Lake counties. After a positive response to last year's
efforts, new commercials, combined with various other media, will bring the
welcome message to all people, especially Catholics who have drifted from the
practice of their faith.

The word Rosary means "Crown of Roses". Our Lady has revealed to several people that
each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose and that each
complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses. The rose is the queen of flowers, and so the
Rosary is the rose of all devotions and it is therefore the most important one. The Holy
Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because within it lays the awesome story of our
salvation. With the Rosary in fact we meditate the mysteries of joy, of sorrow and the
glory of Jesus and Mary. It's a simple prayer, humble so much like Mary. It's a prayer we
can all say together with Her, the Mother of God. With the Hail Mary we invite Her to
pray for us. Our Lady always grants our request. She joins Her prayer to ours. Therefore
it becomes ever more useful, because what Mary asks She always receives, Jesus can
never say no to whatever His Mother asks for.

goodness - thank you for everything! I promise to keep you in my prayers. May

prayerfully led us in song: from receiving a rose and hearing many affirming comments
about our sisters to celebrating some success stories over a cup of coffee; from admiring
the beauty of St. Hedwig Church in silence and awe to thanking God for the gift of
laughter while enjoying the creativity and remembered with praise and thanks to God.
We are very grateful for your kind hospitality.

FOCUS ON THE WORD
30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today's reading from the Gospel of Luke [Lk. 18:9-14] also spoke of humility. As you
all heard in the Parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, the Pharisee judged himself as righteous, viewing others in contempt. That is because in those days, the Pharisees were viewed as
being completely "just" before the Law. Therefore, they had great confidence in themselves.
So here we have two persons who are gathered to pray, either at 9:00 A.M. or at 3:00
P.M., these being the hours of prayer. The Pharisee stands before God, all proud of himself, thanking God that he is not like the rest of the people. He bragged about how he fulfills his commitment to God and the Temple by fasting and giving a tenth of his income. In those days, the Pharisees abstained from food and water every Monday and Thursday.
At a distance, the tax collector prayed to God, asking for His mercy because he is a
sinner. Ashamed of his life, he would not even look up towards heaven. He only beat his breast,
such being symbolic of saying, "Mea Culpa." The words of the tax collector echoed the words
that are found in Psalm 51, "For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me." [Ps.
51:3]
The necessity to humble oneself is echoed over and over in the Holy Bible. Here are a
two examples. In the First Letter of Peter, we read, "All of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due
time." [1 Pet. 5:5- 7]
In the Letter of Paul to the Colossians, we read, "As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience." [Col. 3:12]
As Christians, we are called to humble ourselves as Jesus humbled Himself. How great
was the humility of Jesus! "... Being found in human form, (Jesus) humbled himself and became
obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross." [Phil. 2:8] He in Who the fullness of God
was pleased to dwell bodily, [Col. 1:19, 2:9] "emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being
born in human likeness." [Phil. 2:7] What great love for each and everyone of us the Lord Jesus
has manifested through this great act of humility!

Es la actitud de fondo que Jesús ha puesto
de manifiesto en el Evangelio «por algunos
que, teniéndose por justos, se sentían
seguros de sí mismos». Jesús denuncia su
hipocresía y su falta de humildad no sólo
ante los demás, ya que los despreciaban,
sino ante el mismo Dios: «El fariseo,
erguido, oraba así en su interior: “¡Oh
Dios!, te doy gracias porque no soy como
los demás: ladrones, in justos,
adúlteros.
El fariseo efectivamente hace cosas buenas
(no roba, no es adúltero, ayuna dos veces
por semana, paga el diezmo...) pero su falta
de conciencia de pecado le lleva a tener
una imagen deformada de sí mismo y no
ve su pecado, su actitud de desprecio hacia
los demás. Está auto convencido de que ya
es bueno, mejor que otros, y no se
considera necesitado de perdón ni de
conversión. Con lo cual también tiene una
imagen deformada de Dios. En su oración
no hay una actitud de verdadero
agradecimiento hacia Dios, como veíamos
hace un par de domingos, sino que utiliza
la oración para que quede bien patente lo
buena persona que es. No conoce al Dios
rico en amor, perdón y misericordia, que
no busca la muerte del pecador sino que se
convierta y viva.
De ahí que Jesús ponga como modelo al
publicano, porque aunque de éste no se
nos dice que haga “obras buenas”, sin
embargo sí es capaz de verse en su propia
realidad El publicano reconoce
humildemente ante Dios su pecado y por
eso «se quedó atrás y no se atrevía ni a
levantar los ojos al cielo», no intenta
ocultarlo o aparentar que es “bueno”. Pero
sobre todo, Jesús lo pone como modelo
porque el publicano se conoce a sí mismo
y también conoce a Dios y por eso aun en
su humillación es capaz de abrirse a Él. Su
conciencia de pecado le lleva a abrirse a
Dios, a reconocer que sólo Dios puede
otorgarle la misericordia y el perdón que
tanto necesita. El publicano sabe que «si el
afligido invoca al Señor, Él lo escucha»,
como hemos repetido en el Salmo
responsorial, y por esa confianza en Dios
«éste bajó a su casa justificado y aquel no»,
es decir, el publicano fue quien obtuvo el
perdón y la gracia de Dios.

Arystoteles napisał o uzasadnionej dumie, że można ją umieścić między chełpliwością a przesadną
skromnością. Nieuzasadniona duma występuje wtedy, gdy człowiek jest dumny z tego z czego dumny być nie powinien, np.: z krzywdy, którą komuś wyrządził, z własnego tchórzostwa. Winniśmy
być bowiem dumni z rzeczy moralnie dobrych, które filozof starożytni nazywa dzielnością etyczną.
Zauważa także, że ludzie bywają dumni z swego bogactwa lub pozycji społecznej. Jednakże te rzeczy
bez dzielności etyczne nie mogą być powodem uzasadnionej dumy. Na przeciwnym krańcu jest
położona nadmierna skromność, czyli sytuacja w której człowiek nie jest dumny ze swego
postępowania moralnie dobrego choć być powinny.
Poczucie swojej wartości, czyli uzasadniona duma, wiąże się ze czcią jaką człowiek doznaje od otoczenia. Należy ja przyjmować jeżeli człowiek postępuje moralnie słusznie, bo się człowiekowi to
należy. Zgodnie z tym, co mówi o uzasadnionej dumie Arystoteles, faryzeusz z dzisiejszej ewangelii
miał prawo być zadowolony z własnego postępowania. Alessandro Pronzato zauważa, że nie tylko
faryzeusz wypełnia swoje podstawowe obowiązki podatkowe, polegające na płaceniu dziesięciny z
pszenicy, moszczu i oleju. Przeznaczane na utrzymanie świątyni, pomoc dla ubogich i szkoły rabinackie. „On tymczasem dobrowolnie oddaje dziesięcinę ze wszystkiego, co nabywa. Wie bowiem, że rolnicy i
handlarze często wykręcają się od tego obowiązku. On zaś nie chce w żaden sposób uczestniczyć w naruszaniu prawa.”
Faryzeusz ma poczucie swojej własnej wartości, kiedy patrzy na celnika przeżywa swoją wartość, co
znalazło wyraz w jego myślach. „Boże, dziękuję Ci, że nie jestem jak inni ludzie, zdziercy, oszuści,
cudzołożnicy, albo jak ten celnik. Poszczę dwa razy w tygodniu, daję dziesięcinę ze wszystkiego, co nabywam.” Chrystus jednak nie pochwala tak przeżywanej własnej wartości. Prowokacyjnie przeciwstawia jej inną postawę, którą reprezentuje celnik. „Natomiast celnik stał z daleka i nie śmiał nawet oczu
wznieść ku niebu, lecz bił się w piersi i mówił: "Boże, miej litość dla mnie, grzesznika” Zupełnie nie miał
powodu do dumy.
Tym sposobem Jezus ukazuje wyższość pokory nawet nad uzasadnioną dumą. Pokory w której
człowiek staje wobec Boga i siebie samego. Pokory, która pozwala człowiekowi zmienić się od
środka. Taka postawa pozwala człowiekowi modlić się, czyli rozmawiać z Bogiem.
