The Orthodontic Department of the Jagiellonian University
have pleasure in announcing a series of five two-day courses
(Friday and Saturday) intended as an intensive introduction,
“stepping stones”, to modern fixed appliance orthodontic
therapy. The course is intended for those who have relatively
little experience in fixed appliance
therapy or are already working with
such appliances but feel they would
like a more solid foundation to base
their work on. The courses are offered as single units (of two days),
and while there is no compulsion to
attend every courses it is most likely
that participants will get maximum
benefit if they attend the entire series.
Each “step” is separate and has its
own goals, both regarding the theoretical background as well as the
practical part of the study. It is anticipated that on completion of the
study the participant will have a sound knowledge of System
Kracovia, which is an “up to date” standard pre-adjusted edgewise system and is the daily system in use in the University
Orthodontic Department.
System Kracovia is a system which has been created, modified and developed throughout the working life of the presenter, a period which now covers more than 40 years, and
represents a symbiosis of the best features of several well
tried methods including the “Standard edgewise technique”,
the “Pre-adjusted appliances” as well as the principles of the
“Straight wire appliance systems”, and at the same time incorporating biomechanical principles to create optimal appliances. Remarkably simple in its concept, System Kracovia
is technically individualized for the ideal patient approach
though involves relatively little wire bending.
The construction of the System Kracovia system makes it suitable for virtually all orthodontic cases, including complicated
cases in both growing patients and adults, and with suitable
adaptation can also be used for cases involving orthognathic
surgery, prosthetic reconstruction, bite physiological problems –
yes actually any of the problems you can run into in a busy
orthodontic practice.
The courses are arranged fairly close together so that we have
a chance to concentrate deeply on the problem in hand. The
courses are basically connected with practical orthodontics
but will of course be supplemented with a thorough explanation of the theoretical background for each appliance. The
focus will be on quality, both in the production of efficient
appliances but not least in the expected result of treatment.

dwudniowych, piątkowo-sobotnich, kursów będących intensywnym wprowadzającym „przewodnikiem” do nowoczesnego leczenia ortodontycznego z zastosowaniem aparatów stałych. Kurs jest
kierowany zarówno do tych, którzy mają stosunkowo niewielkie
doświadczenie w leczeniu aparatami
stałymi jak i do tych, którzy je stosują,
ale czują, że chcieliby mieć solidniejsze
podstawy na których mogliby oprzeć
swoją pracę. Kursy są oferowane jako
pojedyncze jednostki (złożone z dwu
dni) i choć nie ma przymusu do wzięcia udziału we wszystkich kursach, to
jednak jest więcej niż pewne, że najwięcej korzyści można osiągnąć poprzez
uczestnictwo w całej serii.
Każdy „krok” jest wydzielony poprzez
swój własny cel zarówno w zakresie
teoretycznego tła jak i części praktycznej. Przewiduje się, że po zakończonym szkoleniu Uczestnik będzie
miał solidną wiedzę na temat Systemu Kracovia, który jest
„zaktualizowanym” systemem stosującym standardowe, predefiniowane zamki ortodontyczne ze slotem krawężnym stosowane
w codziennej praktyce Uniwersyteckiej Poradni Ortodontycznej.
System Kracovia jest systemem, który był tworzony, modyfikowany i rozwijany przez całe zawodowe życie Wykładowcy –
okres, który obejmuje 40 lat i reprezentuje symbiozę najlepszych cech kilku sprawdzonych metod, a w tym „standardowej
techniki łuku krawężnego”, „aparatów predefiniowanych” jak
również zasad działania „aparatów techniki łuku prostego”,
a jednocześnie poprzez wprowadzenie zasad biomechanicznych tworzy optymalny aparat ortodontyczny. Niezwykle prosty
w swoich założeniach, System Krakovia, pomimo faktu, że wymaga niewiele dogięć jest systemem optymalnym technicznie ze
zindywidualizowanym podejściem do pacjenta.
Konstrukcja Systemu Kracovia sprawia, że jest to system z wyboru
dla praktycznie wszystkich przypadków ortodontycznych, włączając
w to skomplikowane przypadki zarówno pacjentów rosnących jak
i dorosłych, a po odpowiednich korektach może być również stosowanych dla przypadków ortognatycznych, wymagających protetycznej rekonstrukcji oraz w przypadkach zaburzeń czynnościowych.
Czyli tak naprawdę może być stosowany w każdym przypadku dobrze prosperującej praktyki ortodontycznej.
Kursy są rozmieszczone w nieodległych odstępach czasowych dając
nam możliwość głębszego skoncentrowania się nad rozważanymi
problemami. Kursy są głównie związane z praktyczną ortodoncją,
ale oczywiście każde zagadnienie zostanie uzupełnione o tło teoretyczne. Będziemy się koncentrować na jakości, zarówno wykonania
efektywnie działających aparatów, ale również na oczekiwanych
wynikach leczenia.

The second course of this series is devoted to the Angles class 2 malocclusion the patients of which, as a single class, probably represent the largest work-load of any orthodontic practice. It is therefore
important to develop a rational and efficient treatment protocol
for these patients who, by definition, belong to one group, but in
reality represent a very varied group
and thus significant treatment challenge to any practice.
The theoretical part of the course describes the differential diagnosis and
variable morphology of the Angle class
II malocclusion. Since System Kracovia
considers malocclusion to be basically a
biological problem and not a pure
question of morphology the course
will start with a thorough description
of the differential diagnosis of this type of malocclusion and continue
with a thorough appraisal of the role of growth in both the aetiology and treatment of the malocclusion. These important concerns
are relevant, not just in this form of malocclusion, but in orthodontics
in general, making this section a keynote section for all orthodontic
therapy. The course continues when a discussion of the problem of
extraction or non-extraction therapy which is likewise one of the fundamental decisions to me made in all orthodontic treatment.
The practical part of the course contains many important features:
we start with a complete discussion of headgear which is included
firstly because of therapeutic importance but also as an illustration
of the role of biomechanics in tooth movement. The information
gained in this part of the course is therefore fundamental for all
orthodontic tooth movement. The adjustment and use of the headgear will be described in a step by step manner
While the courses are based principally on fixed appliance therapy
this particular unit describes the Maxillator in detail as well as the
use of functional appliances in connection with two-stage therapy.
Used correctly this system reduces treatment time, increases posttreatment stability and reduces the need for extraction.
The bite jumping devices have earned their place as an extremely
important feature in orthodontics. The original design, described
by Herbst, have been copied and developed as numerous different appliances during the last 30 years. The course will include
a description of the construction of the Herbst appliance and demonstrate typical effects of this type of treatment. We will also learn
two “jumping devices”, namely the Jasper Jumper and Flex Developer which combine a jumping device with standard fixed appliance therapy. Indications for, and the effects of this type of therapy
will be described in detail.
Class II elastic traction has been used for generations in the treatment of class II malocclusion. This very simple appliance represents
however an efficient biomechanical/biological method by which the
normal relationships can be achieved. The special arches used in
class II elastic therapy will be described in detail so the participant
will appreciate the various possibilities and differentiated effect
which can be achieved by this appliance.
Each section of this course will be illustrated by an up-to-date patient material.
Drugi kurs tej serii poświęcony jest wadom klasy II wg Angle’a, która
jako jedna grupa stanowi największe obciążenie każdej praktyki ortodontycznej. W związku z tym ważny jest rozwój racjonalnego i efektywnego protokołu leczenia dla tych pacjentów, którzy choć z definicji
przynależą do jednej grupy, to tak naprawdę są bardzo zróżnicowani
stanowiąc prawdziwe wyzwanie terapeutyczne dla każdej praktyki.
W teoretycznej części kursu zostanie
przedstawiona diagnostyka różnicowa i zmienna morfologia wad okluzji
drugiej klasy Angle’a. Ponieważ System Kracovia, traktuje wadę zgryzu
jako problem biologiczny, a nie tylko
pytanie o morfologię, kurs rozpocznie się dokładnym przedstawieniem
diagnostyki różnicowej tego typu
wady, a jego kontynuacją będzie dokładna ocena roli wzorca wzrostu w etiologii i leczeniu tej wady zgryzu. Znaczenie tych czynników jest kluczowe, nie tylko w tym typie wady zgryzu, ale ogólnie
w całej ortodoncji, czyniąc z tej części kursu konieczną podstawę dla
każdej formy leczenia ortodontycznego. Kontynuacją kursu będzie
problematyka leczenia ekstrakcyjnego lub bezekstrakcyjnego, która
również stanowi jedną z fundamentalnych decyzji, która musi być
podjęta we wszystkich metodach leczenia ortodontycznego.
Praktyczna część kursu zawiera wiele ważnych punktów: zaczniemy od
omówienia aparatu typu Headgear, po pierwsze ze względu na jego
terapeutyczne znaczenie, ale również aby posłużyć się nim dla zrozumiałego zilustrowania roli biomechaniki w przemieszczaniu zębów co
dla ortodoncji ma fundamentalne znaczenie. Dostosowanie i użycie
aparatu Headgear będzie przedstawione w trybie „krok po kroku”.
Co prawda kurs jest poświęcony głównie leczeniu z zastosowaniem
aparatów stałych, to jednak w tej części zostanie również omówiony
aparat Maxillator, jak również zastosowanie innych aparatów czynnościowych w leczeniu dwuetapowym. Poprawne zastosowanie
tego systemu redukuje czas leczenia, zwiększa stabilność wyników
leczenia i zmniejsza potrzebę ekstrakcji.
Aparaty typu „bite jumping”, zasłużyły na zajęcie wyjątkowo ważnego miejsca w ortodoncji. Oryginalny projekt, opisany przez Herbsta,
był kopiowany i rozwijany w postaci różnych aparatów przez ostatnie 30 lat. W czasie kursu zostanie omówiona konstrukcja aparatu
Herbsta i zostaną przedstawione typowe efekty tego typu leczenia.
Poznamy również inne aparaty typu „jumping device”, a mianowicie
aparat Jasper Jumper oraz Flex Developer, które umożliwiają zastosowanie tego typu aparatu równocześnie ze standardowym stałym
aparatem cienkołukowym. Szczegółowo zostaną omówione efekty
tego typu leczenia.
W leczeniu wad klasy II wyciągi elastyczne klasy drugiej stosowane są
od pokoleń. Zastosowanie tego bardzo prostego aparatu jest efektywną
biomechaniczno/biologiczną metodą, dzięki której można osiągnąć prawidłową relację międzyzębową. Szczegółowo zostaną omówione specjalne łuki ortodontyczne używane w terapii wyciągami klasy II tak, aby
uczestnik mógł poznać różne możliwości i zróżnicowane efekty leczenia
jakie może osiągnąć stosując tego typu aparaty.
Każda część tego kursu będzie ilustrowana pokazem przypadków
klinicznych.
