BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN FAMILIES
This weekend, December 13th & 14th, representatives of
the Bethlehem families will visit St. Rose of Lima selling
crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries made of olive
wood, which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. Please consider these for yourself, or as a Christmas gift, while supporting the efforts of these families in the Holy Land.
PILGRIMAGE TO PERU
There is information regarding the August 2015 St. Rose
of Lima pilgrimage to Peru in flyers at the doors of the

REJOICE
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Isaiah proclaims truly good news to us! God’s coming
brings not sadness, guilt, fear, wrath, or condemnation.
No, God’s coming is a source of comfort and joy. Saying
it once is not enough, for today’s readings are full of joy.
Mary’s Magnificat substitutes for our psalm today, and
our second reading encourages us to rejoice, to give
thanks and praise. This is the root meaning of the Greek
word for eucharist. We are urged to rejoice and give
thanks, because the coming of the Lord brings joy,
healing, liberty, release, vindication. It makes the very
earth spring up with new life! Good tidings!
First Reading - As a garden makes its growth spring up,
so will God make justice spring up before all the nations
(Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11).
Psalm - My soul rejoices in my God
(Luke 1:46-50, 53-54).
Second Reading - Do not quench the Spirit. Do not
despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what
is good (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24).
Gospel - I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
make straight the way of the Lord (John 1:6-8, 19-28).
The tradition of anointing the sick with blessed oil is
very old, but developed slowly and unevenly in the first
eight centuries of the church’s life. St. Augustine, who
wrote volumes of homilies from his thriving church in
North Africa, plus pastoral directives, letters, and
memoirs, never mentions it at all. We know from ancient
prayers that it did happen in Rome, Milan, Gaul, and the
British Isles. In Rome the bishop blessed the oil of the
sick, but it could be applied by a priest, deacon, or a
layperson. It seems that sick persons could even anoint
themselves. St. Genevieve of Paris was known for
anointing the sick in her care.
Perhaps inevitably, complaints of abuses, and even
trickery by sorcerers, brought an end to this consoling
practice. In a dangerous world with a dispersed
population, clerics may have preferred that this hands-on
care was a lay privilege. The purpose of anointing,
however, was not simply healing, but forgiveness of sin
and an experience of saving power of Christ. By the year
800, dioceses everywhere were organizing rituals for
priestly anointing. Although anointing of the sick is
reserved to priests today, perhaps this treasured memory
will enrich the future of the sacrament.

REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI... Będąc
u szczytu popularności, św. Jan Chrzciciel mógł nie
zaprzeczać tym, którzy chcieli w nim widzieć
oczekiwanego Mesjasza. Jednak miłując Jezusa, Jan
wyraźnie określa swoje miejsce i to, kim jest.
Odgrywanie w naszym życiu różnych ról sprawia, że nie
tylko gubimy własną tożsamość, ale również
uniemożliwiamy Duchowi Świętemu działanie w nas.
Przyjmując w pokorze prawdę o sobie i swoje
powołanie, znajdujemy pokój, a trwając w nim
„nienaruszony duch nasz, dusza i ciało, bez zarzutu
zachowają się na przyjście Pana” (por. 1 Tes 5,23).
Zbliżający się czas świąt może być dla nas sposobnością
do refleksji nad tym, kim jesteśmy wobec otaczających
nas ludzi, zwłaszcza tych bliskich.

Trzecia Niedziela Adwentu 2014
Duch Pana Boga nade mną, bo Pan mnie namaścił.
Posłał mnie, by głosić dobrą nowinę ubogim, by
opatrywać rany serc złamanych, by zapowiadać
wyzwolenie jeńcom i więźniom swobodę; aby obwieszczać
rok łaski Pańskiej. Ogromnie się weselę w Panu, dusza
moja raduje się w Bogu moim, bo mnie przyodział w szaty
zbawienia, okrył mnie płaszczem sprawiedliwości, jak
oblubieńca, który wkłada zawój, jak oblubienicę strojną w
swe klejnoty. Zaiste, jak ziemia wydaje swe plony, jak
ogród rozplenia swe zasiewy, tak Pan Bóg sprawi, że się

Izajasz 61,1-2a.10-11
Zawsze się radujcie, nieustannie się módlcie! W

proroctwa nie lekceważcie! Wszystko badajcie, a co
szlachetne - zachowujcie! Unikajcie wszystkiego, co ma
choćby pozór zła. Sam Bóg pokoju niech was całkowicie
uświęca, aby nienaruszony duch wasz, dusza i ciało bez
zarzutu zachowały się na przyjście Pana naszego Jezusa

1 List do Tesaloniczan 5,16-24
Pojawił się człowiek posłany przez Boga - Jan mu było
na imię. Przyszedł on na świadectwo, aby zaświadczyć o
światłości, by wszyscy uwierzyli przez niego. Nie był on
światłością, lecz /posłanym/, aby zaświadczyć o
światłości. Takie jest świadectwo Jana. Gdy Żydzi wysłali
do niego z Jerozolimy kapłanów i lewitów z zapytaniem:
Kto ty jesteś?, on wyznał, a nie zaprzeczył, oświadczając:
Ja nie jestem Mesjaszem. Zapytali go: Cóż zatem? Czy
jesteś Eliaszem? Odrzekł: Nie jestem. Czy ty jesteś
prorokiem? Odparł: Nie! Powiedzieli mu więc: Kim
jesteś, abyśmy mogli dać odpowiedź tym, którzy nas
wysłali? Co mówisz sam o sobie? Odpowiedział: Jam
głos wołającego na pustyni: Prostujcie drogę Pańską, jak
powiedział prorok Izajasz. (...) Ja chrzczę wodą. Pośród
was stoi Ten, którego wy nie znacie, który po mnie idzie, a
któremu ja nie jestem godzien odwiązać rzemyka u Jego
sandała. Działo się to w Betanii, po drugiej stronie
Jordanu, gdzie Jan udzielał chrztu.

ESTA DE LA FE
MÁS QUE DISCÍPULOS
Cada uno de los cuatro roles en las Escrituras de hoy discípulo, profeta, apóstol, testigo - forma una faceta de
la vida en Cristo que vivimos día a día. Isaías nos dice
que el profeta es ungido, tal como fuimos ungidos en el
Bautismo con agua y con el Espíritu, para traer la Buena
Nueva y promover el Reino de Dios, un reino de
salvación, justicia y paz. El apóstol, como Pablo, es un
“enviado”. Cada uno de nosotros, a su manera, es enviado
por Cristo a ser una voz de alegría, a animar las voces
proféticas en el mundo y asegurar que prospere la obra
del Espíritu. Juan Bautista nos muestra la labor del
testigo, enderezando el camino del Señor, anunciando la
venida de la Luz del Mundo.
Hoy escuchamos también a María, discípulo modelo.
Su canto, el “Magnificat”, nos muestra el mundo en que
debemos creer y por el cual laborar: uno en donde Dios
sea alabado, donde el favor de Dios se derrama sobre los
humildes, donde los hambrientos quedan repletos y los
ricos se despiden vacíos, un mundo que continúa
conociendo y celebrando la misericordia de Dios que
perdura por todos los siglos.
