Situation
The City of Minneapolis wanted a new, more modern stadium to house their NFL franchise team and to
host other big-ticket venue items. The city can see upwards of 2 feet of snow during the winter months.
The new stadium design needed to incorporate building elements that will provide adequate protection
from snow slides.
opis
Thorton Tomasetti designed the snow deflection barrier, and specified utilizing Geobrugg’s ROMBO
mesh. Naturally as it melts, accumulated snow eventually slides down the roof. Early calculations
estimated that the sliding snow can accelerate to a speed and force equivalent to a semi-truck. The idea
behind the design is that the snow deflectors will catch the sliding snow and divert it into the gutter
system.
The roof’s snow deflector system is comprised of a total of 14 sections from truss center to truss center.
The trusses span approximately 155 feet from center. The snow deflector sections range in height from
8’ 5” feet to 20’ 2”. The snow deflector system was attached to the truss system and then hoisted and set
into place. The lightest section, when hoisting just the frame, was approximately 84,670 lbs.
The project is Buy-American Act Compliant.
