OBLATES OF THE VIRGIN MARY - MISSION APPEAL
Fr. Tom Carzon, an Oblate priest, will be at St. Rose
on June 25th & 26th, to inform us about their work in the
Philippines, and to ask us for our support in their work. In
the Philippines, the Oblates train Filipino men to become
Oblate priests, and shoulder the full cost of their training.
Presently, it costs approximately $2,500 a year to educate,
feed, and clothe a seminarian. Please do whatever you can
to support this worthy cause.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow
or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through
the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horseback,
with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at outlying
celebrations, presided over by presbyters, to express unity
with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters
that they were not free agents. The Council of Laodicea
forbade the custom of the fermentum in the year 348.
Generally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things that aren’t happening.
So, by mid-fourth century, we have an important clue that
what had once been a Roman custom had become widespread.
Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its
related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the
mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from
the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican dioceses for a fragment of the host from the
bishop’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism
Mass) to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday), the fragment is dropped into
the chalice to signify the parish’s communion with the
bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is different
from the “co-mingling” action we are used to, in which a
fragment of the consecrated bread is dropped into the
chalice just before Communion.

HOPE AND FORGIVENESS
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
There were some interesting conceptions of sin
prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was
the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who
suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners
getting their due from the Almighty.
Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God.
When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The LORD
on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b).
Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What
good news that must have been to David and those who,
like him, could be honest enough to admit their
sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and
forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the Good
News would have been too good to believe, too difficult
to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the Godman, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven
because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only
we love enough!
June is the month most associated with weddings in
the United States. Wedding celebrations always require
some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for
hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the
mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the
details of the banquet, and when a very understandable
crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party.
Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table
settings knows the stress!
Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this
marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless
marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from
the family home to the doors of the church, where the
celebration was held in public view. From this practice
came a prayer called the “Nuptial Blessing,” one of the
most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like
the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are
consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the
Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred
fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church
building. All of this gives married couples good reason to
celebrate their anniversaries well, especially with the
clinking of glasses filled with good wine.

HUMOR DNIA
Przychodzi Matka Teresa do Nieba. Bóg Ojciec z Synem i
Duchem Święty przyjmują ją kolacją, na której jedzą słone
paluszki.
Następnego dnia rano Matka Teresa zjawia się na śniadaniu.

Przy obiedzie Matka Teresa spostrzegła, że jedynym daniem są
znów słone paluszki, ale jako zakonnica nawykła do ubóstwa i
nie
robi
jej
to
różnicy.
Po drugim dniu takiego monotematycznego jadłospisu z
kobiecej
ciekawości
spytała
jednak:
- Panie Boże, dlaczego jemy cały czas słone paluszki? Przecież na nas Troje nie będę gotował!
Jeden z faryzeuszów zaprosił Jezusa do siebie na posiłek.
Wszedł więc do domu faryzeusza i zajął miejsce za stołem.
A oto kobieta, która prowadziła w mieście życie grzeszne,
dowiedziawszy się, że jest gościem w domu faryzeusza,
przyniosła flakonik alabastrowy olejku, i stanąwszy z tyłu
u nóg Jego, płacząc, zaczęła łzami oblewać Jego nogi i
włosami swej głowy je wycierać. Potem całowała Jego
stopy i namaszczała je olejkiem. Widząc to faryzeusz,
który Go zaprosił, mówił sam do siebie: Gdyby On był
prorokiem, wiedziałby, co za jedna i jaka jest ta kobieta,
która się Go dotyka, że jest grzesznicą. Na to Jezus rzekł
do niego: Szymonie, mam ci coś powiedzieć. On rzekł:
Powiedz, Nauczycielu! Pewien wierzyciel miał dwóch
dłużników. Jeden winien mu był pięćset denarów, a drugi
pięćdziesiąt. Gdy nie mieli z czego oddać, darował
obydwom. Który więc z nich będzie go bardziej miłował?
Szymon odpowiedział: Sądzę, że ten, któremu więcej
darował. On mu rzekł: Słusznie osądziłeś. Potem zwrócił
się do kobiety i rzekł Szymonowi: Widzisz tę kobietę?
Wszedłem do twego domu, a nie podałeś Mi wody do nóg;
ona zaś łzami oblała Mi stopy i swymi włosami je otarła.
Nie dałeś Mi pocałunku; a ona, odkąd wszedłem, nie
przestaje całować nóg moich. Głowy nie namaściłeś Mi
oliwą; ona zaś olejkiem namaściła moje nogi. Dlatego
powiadam ci: Odpuszczone są jej liczne grzechy,
ponieważ bardzo umiłowała. A ten, komu mało się
odpuszcza, mało miłuje. Do niej zaś rzekł: Twoje grzechy
są odpuszczone. Na to współbiesiadnicy zaczęli mówić
sami do siebie: Któż On jest, że nawet grzechy
odpuszcza? On zaś rzekł do kobiety: Twoja wiara cię
ocaliła, idź w pokoju! Następnie wędrował przez miasta i
wsie, nauczając i głosząc Ewangelię o królestwie Bożym.
A było z Nim Dwunastu oraz kilka kobiet, które uwolnił
od złych duchów i od słabości: Maria, zwana Magdaleną,
którą opuściło siedem złych duchów; Joanna, żona Chuzy,
zarządcy u Heroda; Zuzanna i wiele innych, które im
usługiwały ze swego mienia. Łk 7,36-8,3
REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
W Wigilię Paschalną Kościół śpiewa o „błogosławionej
winie” – o grzechu, który jest tylko przed-ostatnim
słowem o naszym życiu. Ostatnim jest miłość: świętego
przebaczającego Boga i grzesznego nawracającego się
człowieka. W niej Święty i grzesznik stają się jednym,
gdyż wyznanie swoich grzechów jest wyrazem miłości.
Dla faryzeusza Szymona kobieta płacząca u stóp Jezusa
jest grzesznicą, zagrożeniem dla jego religijnej czystości.
Dla Zbawiciela jest ona powodem wesela, większym niż
suto zastawiony stół w domu bogobojnego faryzeusza.
Dalszą drogę do Jezusa ma Szymon niż jawnogrzesznica.
Jeśli boimy się dotknąć Pana, ponieważ upadliśmy lub
wciąż upadamy wskutek duchowej biedy, patrzmy na tę
kobietę: w niej już nie ma grzechu – jest miłość.

NOVENA A LA MEDALLA MILAGROSA
“Tú eres ese hombre”. Estas palabras, dichas al rey
David por el profeta Natán en el pasaje justo antes de la
primera lectura de hoy, es un fuerte llamado a David para
que tome conciencia de que había hecho mal al tomar la
esposa de Urías y ordenado su muerte en la batalla. El
relato que hizo que David se despertara a su propia culpa
fue sobre un hombre rico que tenía muchas ovejas, pero
que tomó y mató a la única oveja de un hombre pobre.
David opinó que ese hombre debería ser castigado, pero
cuando Natán le hizo saber que esa historia era sobre él
mismo, tomó conciencia de su pecado y se arrepintió; y el
Señor lo perdonó.
Hoy el salmo de David nos recalca la necesidad de
reconocer nuestra propia culpa y confesarla ante el Señor.
Entonces, “dichoso el que está absuelto de su culpa, a
quien le han sepultado su pecado” (Salmo 32:1). Dios se
convierte en nuestro refugio, y nos devuelve nuestra
libertad.
