Sytuacja w Polsce Zoonotic aspects of Avian Influenza Abstract: Avian influenza is a contagious disease of animals caused by viruses, members of the family Orthomyxoviridae, genus influenzavirus A. Influenza A viruses have 16 H subtypes and 9 N subtypes. Only viruses of the H5 and H7 subtypes are known to cause the highly pathogenic form of the disease. Wild waterfowl are considered the natural reservoir of all influenza A viruses. The role of migratory birds in the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza is not fully understood. They have probably carried influenza viruses and they can introduce H5 and H7 viruses to poultry flock, which then mutate to the highly pathogenic form. The some migratory birds are now directly spreading the H5N1 virus in its highly pathogenic form. The widespread persistence of H5N1 in poultry population is dangerous for human health. In Hong Kong, H5N1 virus infected 18 people and killed 6 of them in 1997 and second time in early 2003 the virus caused two infections, with one death. The virus has appeared in Asia and from mid-December 2003 through 2004 outbreaks in poultry caused by the H5N1 virus were reported in nine Asian nations. In 2005 AI virus has been expanded in Africa and Europe. At present AI virus has been detected in 50 countries of 3 continents. The H5N1 virus was the cause of the death or destruction of about hundreds of millions birds. In the current outbreak, laboratory-confirmed human cases were reported in ten countries: Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. The virus infected 230 people and killed 132 of them.(14 July 2006). According to WHO, FAO and OIE virus H5N1 appearing in many countries and expanding to the West, is a serious threat for human health. Permanent mutations, particularly in PB2 and changes of amnioacids in HA associated with human adaptation of avian viruses are worrisome. 1. Introduction. 2. Structure of the particie of AI virus. 3. Wprowadzenie Wielkie epidemie od wieków towarzyszy³y ludzkoci siej¹c ogromne spustoszenia, dziesi¹tkuj¹c ca³e populacje oraz wp³ywaj¹c na losy wiata. Wirus ospy przyczyni³ siê do upadku imperium rzymskiego, u³atwia³ kolonizacjê Brazylii, konkwistê Meksyku, osadnictwo Francuzów i Anglików w Ameryce Pó³nocnej i walkê z Indianami. redniowieczne kontakty z Chinami zaowocowa³y wielk¹ pandemi¹ grypy. Wywo³a³ pandemiê tzw. hiszpankê, w wyniku której zmar³o 3040 milionów osób. Kolejne pandemie wydarzy³y siê w 1957 i 1968 r. Stwierdzono, ¿e odpowiedzialne za nie szczepy Asian/57 i Hong Kong/68 powsta³y w wyniku reasortacji antygenowej pomiêdzy ludzkimi i ptasimi szczepami [11]. Wirus Asian/57 spowodowa³ zgon oko³o 1 mln osób, natomiast wirus Hong Kong/68 podtyp H3N2 by³ przyczyn¹ zejæ miertelnych oko³o 700 000 osób.
