through Blizzard 2011 in the Parish service vehicle
plowing the parking lot and grounds the entire night
and then going to his “day job”! And also to our Parish
Custodian, Ryszard Ruszczyk, who actually made it in
on that Wednesday to continue the snow removal
process for our parishioners, neighbors, school staff
and children to resume our daily activities here. God
bless you both for all your hard work and dedication!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
There is a loud call for perfect humanity in the world. The fact is that humans make all things that surround them
better, but somehow they forget about their own perfection as human beings. Our Lord shows us the way to the
perfect humanity: it is above all things about being faithful and observing the Ten Commandments. The
Commandments closely unite us with God and make us better people.
The fully developed interpretation of the Ten Commandments are the Gospels. Hence, if we truly want to know
the will of God shown in the Commandments and subsequently improve our humanity, we must introduce the
daily practice of reading the Gospels into our life. Christ Himself encourages us to do this in the Gospel of
Matthew: “Not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God.” It means
that just as bread is the nourishment for our body, that God is all our soul needs to be nourished. Following the
Ten Commandments will lead to the progression of transforming our inner self. For change needs to come from
within – at the core. This transformation allows us to ponder deeper about life itself and at the whole reality of the
world.
So, we are not surprised when Jesus praises Mary of Bethany for her attentive listening to His teaching with these
words: “…one thing only is required. Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it.” And
for us the daily reading of the Gospel should also be the better part of each day. Could we at least offer 15
minutes of our day to read the Gospel?
Here is found the answer to the call for a perfect humanity composed of the perfect human beings.
As a matter of fact, the reading of the Gospel is a kind of prayer for those who appreciate thinking, searching and
improving oneself and the world.

Holy Name of Jesus Society
Day of Recollection
The Five Holy Martyrs Holy Name of Jesus Society will
be having a Day of Recollection TODAY, February
13, 2011. The morning will begin with a continental
breakfast at 8:00 a.m. followed by a short meeting
from 8:30-9:00 a.m. At approximately 9:00 a.m. the
Day of Recollection will begin with the guest speaker,
Father Thomas Koys - author, activist, radio talk show
host and Pastor of neighboring Immaculate Conception
Parish. Afterwards, the Society will attend the 12:00
p.m. Mass together.
All Holy Name members, auxiliary, parishioners and
guests are invited to attend. In order to renew and
strengthen your relationship with God, every Catholic
should strive to attend a Day of Recollection at least
once a year.
The F.H.M. Holy Name of Jesus Society meets and attends the 9:00 a.m. Mass the 2nd Sunday of every
month. New members, men and women, are invited to
join the Society and its Auxiliary. Seventh and eighth
grade students are also encouraged to join!
Random Acts of Kindness Day-February 17th
Jesus told us not to brag about our good deeds.
Today, do something nice in secret: pay the toll of a
person behind you, put a coin in a parking meter,
shovel snow off a neighbor’s walk, drop off a donation
at the soup kitchen. Just be sure no one catches you!

Potato Pancake Breakfast
The Pope John Paul II Centrum Committee of our
Parish invites everyone to the first of its kind—
Potato Pancake Breakfast—on Sunday, February 27,
2011 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Francisco
School Lower Hall. Admission is free, but potato pancakes, polish sausage, gulash, and bigos will be available for a nominal fee. Coffee, tea, and hot cocoa will
be served free of charge. All proceeds from this event
will go towards the renovation of the PJP II outdoor
altar. Please come...and bring the family!

Federal Legislative Action Alert
On January 20th, 3 new bills on key Pro-Life issues
were introduced into Congress: No Taxpayer Funding
for Abortion Act (H.R.3), Protect Life Act (H.R.358),
and Abortion Non-Discrimination Act (H.R.361).
No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act: introduced
by Reps. Christopher Smith (Republican-NJ) &
Dan Lipinski (Democrat-IL), along with 160 other
original co-sponsors, would establish a comprehensive
policy prohibiting public funding (taxpayer dollars) for
elective abortion in all federal programs.
Protect Life Act: introduced by Reps. Joseph Pitts
(Republican-PA) & Dan Lipinski (Democrat-IL), along
with 88 other co-sponsors, would correct serious flaws
in the Health Care Reform Law. This act would bring
the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act-PPACA
(that was signed into law in 2010) into line with policies on abortion and conscience rights existing in other
federal health programs as supported by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Abortion Non-Discrimination Act: introduced by
Reps. John Fleming (Republican-LA) and Dan Boren
(Democrat-OK), would protect the civil rights of health
care professionals and other health care entities. The
bill affirms the principle that no health care entity
should be forced by government to perform or participate in abortions. It will strengthen existing federal
conscience protection laws.
The National Committee for a Human Life Amendment
is issuing an Action Alert on these three bills. Constituents are urged to contact their Representatives with
the message to SUPPORT H.R.3, H.R. 358 & H.R.361.

WinterFest 2011

WinterFest is the annual fundraiser for Pope John Paul
II school supported by the 4 parishes in Brighton Park.
WinterFest is this coming Saturday (February 19th)
and it will be a night of fun for everyone! Enjoy games,
food, entertainment, prizes, and of course the big
raffle from 5:00-9:00 p.m. that day! This year’s grand
prize is $2,000—and who can’t use that these days?!
Additional raffle prizes include Chicago Bulls tickets,
Chicago Blackhawks tickets, and passes to Wrigleyville
Rooftops to watch a Cubs game. Unlike in the years
passed, WinterFest raffle tickets were not mailed to
every Parish Family this year, but if you would like to
support PJP II School by purchasing WinterFest raffle
tickets, you may do so after all the Masses this
weekend, or stop by the School Office personally
during business hours this week, or COME ON DOWN

2011 Archdiocesan
Annual Catholic Appeal Begins
The theme of the 2011 Annual Catholic
Appeal is „...seek first the kingdom of
God...” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we
are not to worry about the things of this
world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of God and
the Father will reward us. God provides all that we
have and all that we are. Stewardship, in part, is the
recognition of God’s gifts and the obligation to return a
significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work. Our
gifts to our parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church
throughout the world are given in gratitude for what
God has given us. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal
helps to provide education, services, and ministry to
thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese.
The Appeal supports Parish ministries that provide
Religious Education to children, youth and adults in
economically disadvantaged communities. It is also one
of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support
for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese.
Also, when our Parish reaches its goal of $12,443 in
paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received
will be returned to us for use in our Parish. Please
make a pledge and contribution to the 2011 Annual
Catholic Appeal the weekend of February 26-27, 2011.

Cub Scout Pack #3465 Takes Gold!
Five Holy Martyrs Cub Scout Pack #3465
attended the River Trails District annual
Klondike Derby at Camp Sullivan in
Tinley Park on February 5, 2011. The
Pack competed in many events including
an obstacle course, a relay race with
several challenges, archery, BB shoot,
and Scout Trivia Challenge. The Pack
came in 1st place and received the Gold
Medal for Cub Scout Klondike Derby!
Way to go Pack #3465!
Also, an Honorable Mention was
awarded to Boy Scout Troop #465.

Z BIURKA PROBOSZCZA
Myśl...albo dwie...
Nieustannie, tu i tam, słychać wołanie o doskonałe człowieczeństwo. Jest faktem, że człowiek doskonali wszystko
wokół siebie, ale jak dyby zaniechał własną doskonałość. Pan Jezus pokazuje nam drogę do doskonałego
człowieczeństwo: chodzi przede wszystkim o wierne i dokładne zachowanie Przykazań Bożych. One bowiem
zmierzają do ścisłego zjednoczenia człowieka z Bogiem i czynią człowieka doskonałym.
Pełnym rozwinięciem Dekalogu jest Ewangelia. Jeśli więc chcemy być doskonałymi ludźmi, to musimy wprowadzić
praktykę możliwie codziennego czytania Ewangelii. Zachęca nas do tego sam Jezus Chrystus: „Nie samym chlebem
żyje człowiek, ale wszelkim słowem, które pochodzi z ust Bożych”, co właśnie oznacza, że jak chleb jest naszym
codziennym pokarmem dla ciała, tak słowo Boże ma być naszym codziennym pokarmem dla duszy.
Co więcej: „Jeśli mnie miłujecie, zachowujcie przykazania Moje”. Postęp w miłości Bożej przynosi nam stopniowo
przeobrażenie w człowieka wewnętrznego. Uzyskujemy coraz głębsze spojrzenie na życie i całą rzeczywistość.
Coraz bardziej poddajemy się działaniu Ducha mądrości i człowieczeństwo nasze udoskonala się…
Nic dziwnego, że Chrystus chwali Marię w Betanii za wsłuchiwanie się w Jego Boską naukę i mówi: „Maria
najlepszą cząstkę obrała” i dla nas wczytywanie się w naukę objawioną też winno być najlepszą cząstką dnia.
A ile czasu dziennie chcemy poświęcić na religijne czytanie? Czy przeznaczymy na ten cel chociaż jeden kwadrans?
Korzyści samowychowawcze z codziennego kontaktu z mądrością Bożą okażą się niezwykłe i wielorakie; i to
zarówno w zakresie życia wewnętrznego poszczególnej jednostki, jak i w skali społecznej. Na tych drogach rodzić
się będzie doskonalsze człowieczeństwo i lepszy świat.
Pamiętajmy też, że czytanie Ewangelii jest rodzajem modlitwy. Jest to forma modlitwy dla tych, którzy doceniają
myślenie, poszukiwanie i ulepszanie siebie i świata.

jest w rękach Pana Boga i ludzi dobrej woli.

Zimowy, w sobotę, 19go lutego, 2011 od godz.
5:00 p.m. do 900 p.m. Gry dla dzieci i dorosłych,
posiłki, nagrody i konkursy dla wszystkich. Zapraszamy
wszystkich do udziału w Festywalu, który odbędzie się
przy naszej parafii.
Główna wygrana jest $2,ooo. Dodatkowe nagrody to
bilety na mecze Bulls, Blackhawks i wstęp na
Wrigleyville Rooftops aby patrzyć Cubs mecz.

Rozpoczyna Się Doroczna Kwesta Katolicka 2011
W tym roku, motywem przewodnim jest
fragment z Ewangelii św. Mateusza (6:33)
„..starajcie się naprzód o królestwo Boga...”
Jezus uczył nas, abyśmy nie zamartwiali się o
rzeczy tego świata, a raczej najpierw starali się o
Królestwo Boże, za co zostaniemy wynagrodzeni przez
Jego Ojca. Bóg zapewnia nam wszystko czym jesteśmy i
czego potrzebujemy. Podstawą prawdziwego
chrześcijanina jest wyrabianie postawy służebnej, czyli
w tym wypadku dzielenia się swoimi dobrami z
potrzebującymi.
Postawa służebna, to także
zrozumienie przez nas samych, że wszystko co
posiadamy jest darem od Boga i naszym obowiązkiem
jest zwrócić część tych darów, by wspomóc dzieła Boże.
Dary złożone na rzecz naszej parafii, archidiecezji i
Kościoła na całym świecie są składane jako akt
wdzięczności za to, co otrzymaliśmy od Boga. Ofiary
złożone na Doroczną Kwestę Katolicką pomagają w
zapewnieniu wykształcenia, przygotowania i
opracowania programów pomocy, wreszcie stanowią
wsparcie dla duszpasterstwa ubogim wielu tysiącom
osób w naszej archidiecezji, a nawet poza jej granicami.
Ponadto, po uzyskaniu przez naszą parafię kwoty
docelowej w wysokości $12,443 w postaci wpłaconych
zobowiązań, 100% zebranych w ten sposób środków,
zostanie zwrócona nam, do wykorzystania na niezbędne
dla naszej parafii cele.
Prosimy o modlitwę w intencji Dorocznej Kwesty
Katolickiej 2011. Pamiętajmy, że o powodzeniu tego
wyjątkowego dzieła Bożego zadecyduje także nasza
hojność i deklaracja złożonego daru w 26 i 27 lutego.
