t’s coming up! Szczecin will soon welcome the world’s grandest and most majestic sailing ships. During the Tall
Ships Races, held on 3-6 August, nearly 100 vessels will arrive in our city. Szczecin’s waters will anchor sailing ships
from Russia, Mexico, the UK, Germany and even Oman. In the impressive armada you will find such vessels as Cuathemoc, Kruzenshtern, Lord Nelson, Mir, Kapitan Głowacki and Dar Młodzieży.
ARM Cuauhtemoc s a
sail-training vessel of
the Mexican Navy. It also
goes by the names of the
Ambassador and the Sea
Knight. This ship made a
particularly powerful impression on all Szczecin
locals and visitors during
the Regatta Finals in 2007. The vigour of its crew spread
through the whole wharf at Chrobry Embankments.
Kruzenshtern is a
Russian four-masted vessel. It is
one of the largest
sailing ships worldwide. In 2011,
this
legendary
windjammer celebrated her 85 birthday.
Lord Nelson is the first sailing ship ever built to cater
to the needs of people
with disabilities. The vessel
is equipped with automated sails, yard lifts, alarms
for the deaf, and acoustic
compasses. The ship sails
under the British flag.
STS Mir is a Tyree-masted training frigate. Built in 1987
in the Gdynia Shipyard,
currently it sails under
the Russian flag. Mir is
considered to be the fastest sail-training vessel
worldwide. It is a frequent participant in the
Tall Ships Races and a
multiple winner of the
Regatta.
STS Kapitan Głowacki is the flagship of the Polish Sailing Association, named after Włodzimierz Głowacki,
one of the most prominent advocates of sailing in Poland. The vessel takes part in the Szczecin School under
the Sails and the Marine Youth Education initiatives.
Szczecin is also the home
port of the STS Fryderyk
Chopin sailing ship. Thanks
to its construction, this sixyard brig ship can reach an
astonishing speed in the
open sea. It is the second
largest ship sailing under
the Polish flag. It serves as
a training deck for marine education under
the School under the
Sails initiative. In
2012, STS Fryderyk Chopin
won the
Tall Ships
Races.
