St. Blase, Bishop and Martyr—Feast Day, February 3rd
St. Blase was a bishop in Armenia in the early fourth
century. Not much is known about him, but there are
many legends and stories that tell us what the times
were like. It was a time of persecution for the Catholic
Church. The Roman empire was trying to get rid of the
Christians. Many faithful were martyred because they
would not give up their love and faith in Jesus Christ.
Saint Blase received a message from God to go into
the hills to escape the persecution. The Roman governor
sent men to find him. While searching for St. Blase, the
hunters discovered a cave that was full of sick wild animals. There was St. Blase in the middle, healing the animals! They captured him and took him back to the governor. On the way, St. Blase rescued a poor woman’s pig
from a wolf. Other stories say that he cured a boy who
had a fish bone stuck in his throat and was choking to
death. It is because of this miraculous healing that he is
considered to be the patron of throat ailments. After suffering various forms of torture, St. Blase was beheaded.
Seven women were martyred at the Same time.
The blessing of throats will take place after the 5pm
Mass on, Feb. 1st in our church.
Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr,
may God deliver you from every disease of the throat
and from every other illness; In the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 4:12-23
Jesus begins to preach in Galilee and calls his first disciples. (shorter form Matthew 4:12-17)
Background on the Gospel Reading
Today's Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus' public
ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke
(called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus' public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his
retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil.
When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John
has been arrested.
The first part of today's Gospel places Jesus' ministry in
the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew
wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to
do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry
in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to
preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.
When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us
that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John)
dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this
Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the
fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they
heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have
been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that
Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.
The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry
that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue
and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people's diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus' ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among
us.

Archdiocese of Chicago Statement in Response to the
Jeff Anderson Document Release Press Conference

The documents made public by Jeffrey Anderson relate to 30 Archdiocesan priests accused of abusing minors at various times during the
last half century. All of the documents relate to cases that date back
many years, in some cases, decades. Ninety-five percent of these
cases occurred prior to 1988. Today no priest with even one substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor serves in ministry in the
Archdiocese of Chicago.
The Archdiocese acknowledges that its leaders made some decisions
decades ago that are now difficult to justify. They made those decisions in accordance with the prevailing knowledge at the time. In the
past 40 years, society has evolved in dealing with matters related to
abuse. Our understanding of and response to domestic violence, sexual harassment, date rape, and clerical sexual abuse have undergone
significant change and so has the Archdiocese of Chicago. While we
complied with the reporting laws in place at the time, the Church and
its leaders have acknowledged repeatedly that they wished they had
done more and done it sooner, but now are working hard to regain
trust, to reach out to victims and their families, and to make certain
that all children and youth are protected.
We realize the information included in these documents is upsetting. It
is painful to read. It is not the Church we know or the Church we want
to be. The Archdiocese sincerely apologizes for the hurt and suffering
of the victims and their families as a result of this abuse. Our hope is
through this release of documents and the work we are doing through
our Office for the Protection of Children and Youth we can help further
promote healing among all those affected by these crimes.
The Archdiocese of Chicago is in full compliance with the Charter for
the Protection of Children and Young People, adopted by the U.S.
Bishops in Dallas in June 2002. We refer all reports of sexual abuse
immediately to civil authorities. The Archdiocese’s independent Review Board examines the findings of all investigations and makes recommendations to the archbishop regarding fitness for ministry and
safety of children.
The Archdiocese of Chicago is concerned first and foremost with the
healing of abuse victims and has maintained a victim assistance ministry for more than 25 years. In addition, the Archdiocesan Office for the
Protection of Children and Youth, charged with assisting victims and
their families and preventing abuse, has trained and processed background checks on more than 160,000 priests, deacons, religious, lay
employees and volunteers; conducted more than 3,000 training sessions; and trained more than 200,000 children to protect themselves

Al enterarse Jesús de que habían arrestado a Juan, se
retiró a Galilea. Dejando Nazaret, se estableció en Cafarnaún, junto al lago, en el territorio de Zabulón y Neftalí. Así
se cumplió lo que había dicho el profeta Isaías: “País de
Zabulón y país de Neftalí, camino del mar, al otro lado del
Jordán, Galilea de los gentiles. El pueblo que habitaba en
tinieblas vio una luz grande; a los que habitaban en tierra
y sombras de muerte, una luz les brilló.” Entonces comenzó Jesús a predicar diciendo: Convertíos, porque está cerca el reino de los cielos. Pasando junto al lago de Galilea,
vio a dos hermanos, a Simón, al que llaman Pedro, y a
Andrés, su hermano, que estaban echando el copo en el
lago, pues eran pescadores. Les dijo: Venid y seguidme, y
os haré pescadores de hombres. Inmediatamente dejaron
las redes y lo siguieron. Y, pasando adelante, vio a otros
dos hermanos, a Santiago, hijo de Zebedeo, y a Juan, que
estaban en la barca repasando las redes con Zebedeo, su
padre. Jesús los llamó también. Inmediatamente dejaron
la barca y a su padre y lo siguieron. Recorría toda Galilea,
enseñando en las sinagogas y proclamando el Evangelio
del reino, curando las enfermedades y dolencias del pueblo.

La Campaña Católica Anual 2014 está en marcha. Muchos de
nuestros feligreses ya recibieron una misiva del Cardenal George.
En ella les pide que realicen sus promesas de donativos a la Campaña Católica Anual 2014. Por favor respondan de manera generosa. La Campaña apoya tanto a los ministerios parroquiales como a
los arquidiocesanos. La Campaña financia servicios que son de
gran ayuda a otros ministerios aquí en nuestra parroquia. Este año,
el tema de la Campaña es: “Ustedes son templo de Dios”. Somos
templos vivientes de Dios y llevamos Su verdadera presencia al
mundo. Él nos llama a compartir nuestros dones con los demás.
Al contemplar los dones que nos ha dado, debemos reflexionar
también sobre nuestra gratitud por dichos dones. Su apoyo financiero a la obra de nuestra parroquia, de nuestra Arquidiócesis y de
la Iglesia en todo el mundo es, de hecho, una forma de expresar
esta gratitud.

„Nawracajcie się!”
III Niedziela Zwykła
Gdy Jezus posłyszał, że Jan został uwięziony, usunął się
do Galilei. Opuścił jednak Nazaret, przyszedł i osiadł w
Kafarnaum nad jeziorem, na pograniczu Zabulona i Neftalego. Tak miało się spełnić słowo proroka Izajasza: Ziemia
Zabulona i ziemia Neftalego, Droga morska, Zajordanie,
Galilea pogan! Lud, który siedział w ciemności, ujrzał światło wielkie, i mieszkańcom cienistej krainy śmierci światło
wzeszło. Odtąd począł Jezus nauczać i mówić: Nawracajcie się, albowiem bliskie jest królestwo niebieskie. Gdy
Jezus przechodził obok Jeziora Galilejskiego, ujrzał dwóch
braci: Szymona, zwanego Piotrem, i brata jego, Andrzeja,
jak zarzucali sieć w jezioro; byli bowiem rybakami. I rzekł
do nich: Pójdźcie za Mną, a uczynię was rybakami ludzi.
Oni natychmiast zostawili sieci i poszli za Nim. A gdy poszedł stamtąd dalej, ujrzał innych dwóch braci, Jakuba,
syna Zebedeusza, i brata jego, Jana, jak z ojcem swym
Zebedeuszem naprawiali w łodzi swe sieci. Ich też powołał. A oni natychmiast zostawili łódź i ojca i poszli za Nim. I
obchodził Jezus całą Galileę, nauczając w tamtejszych
synagogach, głosząc Ewangelię o królestwie i lecząc
wszelkie choroby i wszelkie słabości wśród ludu.

Ktokolwiek obserwuje szeroko zakrojoną działalność Kościoła, może stracić z oczu to, co w jego misji jest najważniejsze. Zaangażowanie w prace na rzecz pokoju, ratowanie głodnych w świecie, wychowywanie młodego pokolenia, troska o biednych i chorych, obrona
uciśnionych, walka o sprawiedliwość społeczną, ekumenizm, kontakty
z przedstawicielami innych religii. .. a w ramach samego religijnego
życia nowenny, kongresy, zebrania itp., to wszystko jest ważne, ale co
jest najważniejsze? Tylko jedno: wezwanie do nawrócenia! Otwarcie
przed człowiekiem szansy uczynienia możliwym tego, co wydaje się
być niemożliwe, a mianowicie że może uczestniczyć w życiu doskonalszym niż to, które jest, że może sięgnąć po udział w życiu samego
Boga.
Wezwanie do nawrócenia stanowi serce religii. Jezus rozpoczyna swe publiczne działanie od tego wezwania i kończy je tym wezwaniem. Przyszedł bowiem, by pomóc nam w dokonaniu wielkiej
wewnętrznej przemiany, w dorastaniu do życia wiecznego.
Jakie są podstawowe elementy nawrócenia? Pierwszy z
nich to troska o dojrzałość człowieka. Ten się nawraca, kto szuka ubogacenia swego umysłu, serca i uczuć. Nawracanie jest zawsze znakiem dojrzałości człowieka, zdolności do zmobilizowania wszystkich
sił, by sięgnąć po wartość wyższą. Komu nie zależy na pogłębianiu
wiadomości o świecie, o Bogu, o ludziach, o sobie, komu nie zależy na
duchowym rozwoju, ten nie odpowie na wezwanie Jezusa.
Drugim elementem jest postawa otwarta na przyjęcie wartości religijnych. Zależy ona od człowieka i Jezus w Ewangelii wielokrotnie się o nią upomina. Chodzi tu o odpowiednie nastawienie. Na przykład zupełnie z innym nastawieniem wędrujemy do teatru, by oglądać
komedię, a z innym na pogrzeb. Jeśli ktoś przyjdzie do teatru z wewnętrznym nastawieniem takim jak na pogrzeb, nie potrafi odebrać
tych wartości, które można dostrzec w dobrej komedii.
Niewłaściwe nastawienie bardzo utrudnia przyjęcie wartości
religijnych. Czasem nakładające się na siebie drobiazgi decydują o
narastaniu uprzedzeń, które w rezultacie uniemożliwiają przeżycie
nawrócenia. Trzeba ustawicznie zabiegać o postawę otwartą, gotową
na przyjęcie wartości religijnych.
Trzecim ważnym elementem jest widzialny znak, którym Bóg
się posługuje dla przekazania swojej łaski. Może to być tekst Pisma
Świętego odczytany jako Słowo Boga adresowane wyłącznie do mnie.
Tak między innymi przeżył nawrócenie św. Augustyn czytając jedno
zdanie z Listu św. Pawła do Rzymian. Może to być głębsze przeżycie
zjawisk przyrody, majestatu gór lub zachodu słońca, ostatnie słowo
umierającego przyjaciela lub piękna melodia. Pewne z tych znaków
zostały wykorzystane w życiu religijnym. Do nich należy przede
wszystkim chrzest, czyli zanurzenie człowieka w wodzie. Wynurza się
już jako oczyszczony, jako nawrócony. Znak ten znany innym religiom,
był stosowany przez Jana Chrzciciela głoszącego nawrócenie i został
przez Jezusa ustanowiony jako sakramentalny znak nawrócenia.
Wezwanie Chrystusa: „Nawracajcie się!” stanowi doskonałą
okazję do głębszej refleksji nad najważniejszą misją Kościoła, jaką jest
wzywanie ludzkości do nawrócenia. A ponieważ każdy człowiek potrzebuje nawrócenia, jest to również okazja do refleksji nad swoim
nawróceniem, nad dorastaniem do pełnego nawrócenia.
Zbawienie człowieka jest zawarte w jego nawróceniu. Człowiek przez nie staje się w pełni sobą, odnajduje siebie wobec Boga,
bliźnich, świata i sam zostaje wypełniony prawdziwym pokojem.

Kurs Przedmałżeński!
Przypominamy, że w każdą II niedzielę miesiąca w naszej parafii po Mszy św. o godz. 10.30 odbywa się kurs
przedmałżeński. Osoby zamierzające zawrzeć Sakrament
Małżeństwa powinny pamiętać, iż należy:
► zgłosić się do kancelarii parafialnej przynajmniej pół
roku przed ślubem w celu ustalania daty i złożenia
depozytu.
► na trzy miesiące przed ustaloną datą ślubu dostarczyć:
► świadectwo chrztu i bierzmowania wystawione przez proboszcza nie później niż sześć miesięcy przed datą ślubu.
► zaświadczenie o odbytym kursie ”Precana”
► zaświadczenie o zawartym w urzędzie stanu cywilnego związku
lub ”Marriage License”
► w obecności dwóch świadków na trzy miesiące przed ślubem w
kancelarii parafialnej spisać protokół.
Wszystkim narzeczonym składamy Szczęść Boże.
Osoby zapisane do naszej parafii mogą uzyskać informację o ofiarach złożonych w roku 2013 na naszą parafię,
w ten sposób będzie można odpisać tę kwotę od podatku.
