Registrations for CCD
2015-2016 will begin on
July 7. All new and returning students must register
at the rectory during office hours. Classes meet two
Saturdays per month starting September 12 from
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

ministries will be hosting our annual summer food sales starting

Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
Mark 6:1-6
Jesus is rejected in his hometown.
Background on the Gospel Reading
This Gospel immediately follows
upon last week's stories of the raising of Jairus's daughter and the
healing of the woman with a hemorrhage. It sets the context of our Gospel readings for the next two
weeks in which Jesus will extend the work of his ministry to his disciples.
Today's Gospel describes what many believe to have been
the typical pattern of Jesus' ministry: teaching in the synagogue followed by acts of healing. In his hometown of Nazareth, the people
are amazed by what they hear, but they also cannot comprehend
how someone they know so well might move them so powerfully.
In this Gospel, we learn some interesting details about
Jesus and his early life. Jesus' kinfolk know him to be a carpenter,
an artisan who works in wood, stone, and metal. He probably
learned this trade from his father. Family members of Jesus are also
named. Mark describes Jesus as the son of Mary, which is an unusual designation. Adult males were more typically identified with the
name of their fathers. It is unclear why Mark deviates from this custom.
Brothers and sisters of Jesus are also named. Scholars are
divided on how to interpret this. As Catholics, we believe that Mary
was and remained always a virgin, thus we do not believe that this
Gospel refers to other children of Mary. Some have suggested that
these family members might be Joseph's children from a previous
marriage, but there is little evidence to support this. Others explain
this reference by noting that the words brother and sister were often
used to refer to other types of relatives, including cousins, nieces,
and nephews.
This Gospel tells us that Jesus is hampered from performing miracles in Nazareth because of the people's lack of faith. Jesus
is said to be surprised by this. He did not predict or foresee this rejection. In this detail we find a description of the very human side of
Jesus.
This passage unfolds a continuing theme of Mark's Gospel:
Who is Jesus? His kinfolk in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the
son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. Mark is
foreshadowing Jesus' rejection by his own people, the people of
Israel. He is also reflecting on and trying to explain the situation of
the community for which he wrote. While many of the first Christians
were Jewish, Christianity took hold and flourished in the Gentile community. Mark's community was mostly a Gentile community, who
may have been experiencing persecution. By showing that Jesus
himself was rejected, Mark consoles and reassures his first readers.
He also prepares us to accept this possible consequence of Christian discipleship.

Saint Maria Goretti

In 1900, two farm laborers relocated
their destitute families to an old barn
near Nettuno, Italy. Luigi Goretti, his
wife, Assunta, and their six children
moved in with Giovanni Serenelli and
Alessandro, his teenaged son. Soon
after the move, Luigi died, leaving
Assunta to carry on his work. Maria,
her oldest child, who was ten, assumed the household duties and cheerfully supported her mother.
At twelve Maria was already a beautiful young woman. Alessandro,
then nineteen, twice made advances toward her. She rebuffed him
and kept his propositions secret because he had threatened to kill her.
On July 5, 1902, Maria sat atop the hovel’s stairs, mending Alessandro’s shirt. He stormed past her, ordered her into a bedroom, grabbed
her, and attempted to rape her. “No! No! No!” Maria cried. “Don’t touch
me, Alessandro! It’s a sin!” She resisted him with all her strength. Angered beyond control, he stabbed her fourteen times. Maria survived a
pain-filled twenty-four hours in the hospital.
She showed more concern for where her mother would sleep in the
hospital than for herself. Before she died she forgave Alessandro and
prayed for God to have mercy on him.
Alessandro was sentenced to thirty years’ hard labor and imprisoned
at Noto, Sicily. One night in 1910 he dreamed that Maria handed him a
bouquet of lilies and he began to feel remorse. Soon after, Bishop
Blandini of Noto visited him, explaining that Maria had forgiven him
and that God would also forgive him. The message struck home. A
few days later Alessandro sent the bishop this letter:
I cannot tell you what comfort has come to my sorrowing soul through
the conversation with your Excellency, for which I send my most heartfelt gratitude.
It is indeed true that in a moment of mental aberration I was led to
commit a barbarous murder which the law has already punished. . . .I
regret doubly the evil I have done, because I realize that I have taken
the life of a poor, innocent girl. Up to the last moment she wanted to
protect her honor, sacrificing herself rather than give in to my wishes.
This it was that drove me to so terrible and deplorable a deed. Publicly, I detest the evil that I have done. And I ask God’s forgiveness and
that of the poor, desolate family for the great wrong I committed. I
hope that I too, like so many others in this world, may obtain pardon.
May your prayers united to mine obtain for me the forgiveness of him
who governs all things, and the calm and the blessing of the poor departed one.
Alessandro was released from prison early for good behavior. He reformed his life and ultimately joined the Franciscan Third Order. Pope
Pius XII canonized Maria Goretti in 1950. Assunta was present for the
event, the first time a mother was present when her child was declared
a saint.

se extraño de su falta de fe. Y recorría los pueblos del contorno enseñando.

Las nuevas registraciones para
el Catecismo 2015-2016 empezaran a partir del 7 de julio. Nuevos estudiantes como aquellos
que regresan por Segundo año deben de registrarse en la
rectoría durante horas de oficina. Las clases son dos sábados por mes de 8:00 a.m.—10:00 a.m. empezando el
12 de septiembre.
Requisitos para Inscribirse:

entrenamiento de VIRTUS en español el día Miércoles, 15 de julio de 7:00 p.m. ha 10:00 p.m.. Este entrenamiento es mandatorio para todos los voluntarios
y catequistas que trabajan o supervisan actividades
con menores de edad.
Los participantes se podrán registran en línea
en www.virtusonline.org o en persona el día del entrenamiento.
No menores de edad serán permitidos asistir al entrenamiento.

Jezus przyszedł do swego rodzinnego miasta. A towarzyszyli Mu Jego uczniowie. Gdy nadszedł szabat, zaczął
nauczać w synagodze; a wielu, przysłuchując się, pytało
ze zdziwieniem: Skąd On to ma? I co za mądrość, która
Mu jest dana? I takie cuda dzieją się przez Jego ręce. Czy
nie jest to cieśla, syn Maryi, a brat Jakuba, Józefa, Judy i
Szymona? Czyż nie żyją tu u nas także Jego siostry? I
powątpiewali o Nim. A Jezus mówił im: Tylko w swojej ojczyźnie, wśród swoich krewnych i w swoim domu może
być prorok tak lekceważony. I nie mógł tam zdziałać żadnego cudu, jedynie na kilku chorych położył ręce i uzdrowił
ich. Dziwił się też ich niedowiarstwu. Potem obchodził okoliczne wsie i nauczał.

Święty Benedykt z Nursji,
opat, patron Europy
Benedykt z Nursji należy
do najgłośniejszych postaci w Kościele łacińskim.
Wsławił się niezwykle mądrą i wyważoną regułą,
która stała się podstawą
dla bardzo wielu późniejszych rodzin zakonnych na
Zachodzie. Przez założony przez siebie zakon
Benedykt przyczynił się tylko do pogłębienia życia religijnego w Kościele, ale i szeroko rozumianej kultury. Jego synowie duchowi zasłużyli
się najwięcej dla pozyskania Chrystusowi ludów
germańskich. Te racje skłoniły Pawła VI do tego, by w 1964 r. wyróżnić św. Benedykta zaszczytnym tytułem głównego patrona Europy.
Ojciec Benedykta był właścicielem ziemskiej posiadłości w Nursji. Benedykt urodził się ok. roku
480 wraz ze swoją bliźniaczą siostrą, św. Scholastyką. Pierwsze nauki pobierał w rodzinnym
miasteczku. Na dalsze studia udał się do Rzymu. Nie pozostał tu długo. Opuścił wieczne miasto, gdyż chciał oddać się Panu Bogu na wyłączną służbę jako asceta. Udał się ok. 60 km
na wschód w kierunku Tivoli i osiadł w przysiółku Enfide (dzisiaj Affile) przy kościele świętych
Piotra i Pawła u stóp wzgórz Prenestini. Z niewiadomych bliżej przyczyn opuścił jednak i to
miejsce i przeniósł się do Subiaco. Znalazł tu
nie tylko ciszę, ale również dogodną grotę,
gdzie mógł zamieszkać i oddać się wyłącznie

kontemplacji. Z rąk jakiegoś mnicha przyjął też
habit. Obrana przez niego grota zapewniała mu
zupełny spokój. Przebywał tam trzy lata. Miejscowi górale, wypasający kozy zaopatrywali go
w konieczną żywność.
Z czasem zaczęli przyłączać się do Benedykta
uczniowie. Pod jego kierunkiem utworzono 12
małych klasztorków po 12 uczniów każdy. Na
czele każdego z nich postawił Benedykt przełożonych, od siebie bezpośrednio zależnych..
Kiedy stanął już klasztor i kościół, a mury nowej
placówki zaczęły się zapełniać adeptami, Benedykt postanowił ułożyć regułę.
Zasadniczą jej cechą jest umiar. Celem zasadniczym, jaki Założyciel wytyczył swoim synom
duchowym, jest służba Boża. Całe życie mnicha, jego wszystkie chwile i czynności winny
zmierzać do tego, by głosiły chwałę Stworzyciela. Dewizą Patriarchy było: Ora et labora - Módl
się i pracuj! Ze szczególną pieczołowitością
strzegł kultu liturgicznego, co pozostało do dni
obecnych pięknym dziedzictwem jego zakonu.
Poważną część dnia zakonnika przeznaczył na
lectio divina - czytanie Pisma Świętego.
Benedykt zmarł 21 marca 547 r. w kilka dni po
śmierci swojej siostry, św. Scholastyki, założycielki żeńskiej gałęzi benedyktynów.
Zaraz po śmierci św. Benedykt odbierał od swoich duchowych synów cześć ołtarzy.
W Polsce najbardziej znanym opactwem benedyktyńskim jest Tyniec. Do Polski benedyktyni
przybyli wraz ze św. Wojciechem (+ 997). Za
czasów Bolesława Chrobrego założyli klasztor
po kamedułach w Międzyrzeczu. Zamieszki, jakie po śmierci tegoż króla powstały i nawrót pogaństwa, doprowadziły do upadku klasztoru. W
XI wieku widzimy benedyktynów w Trzemesznie, w Łęczycy (Tum), w Gnieźnie, w Tyńcu, na
Łysej Górze, w Czerwińsku, Płocku, Kruszwicy,
w Krakowie, Sieciechowie, we Wrocławiu, Oleśnicy, Lubiniu i w Gdańsku. Obecnie istnieją ich
opactwa w Tyńcu, Lubiniu koło Kościana oraz
Biskupowie.
W ikonografii św. Benedykt przedstawiany jest
w habicie benedyktyńskim, w kukulli, z krzyżem
w dłoni. Jego atrybutami są: anioł, bicz, hostia,
kielich z wężem, księga, kruk z chlebem w dziobie, księga reguły w ręce, kubek, pastorał, pies,
rozbity puchar, infuła u nóg z napisem "Ausculta
fili" - "Synu, bądź posłuszny", wiązka rózg.
