Seminarium dotyczy funkcji języka jako instrumentu osiągania
konkretnych celów komunikacyjno-społecznych. Omówione zostaną
następujące zagadnienia:
- pragmatyczna struktura perswazji, narzucania i obrony ideologii,
tworzenie wiarygodności komunikatu językowego i jego nadawcy,
psychologia retoryki
- język w komunikacji masowej – perswazyjna funkcja reklamy, struktura
przemówienia politycznego i debaty politycznej, tradycje i współczesne
kanony retoryki społecznej i politycznej w Polsce w świetle sytuacji w
krajach anglosaskich
- analiza dyskursu rzeczywistego (real-world discourse), odnajdywanie
pragmatycznych nośników przekazu na poziomie morfologicznym,
składniowym i fonetycznym
- świadomość pragmatyczna w nauczaniu języka obcego
- metodologia pragmatyki – status pragmatyki wobec socjolingwistyki,
antropologii, psychologii społecznej, psychologii eksperymentalnej,
neurolingwistyki, kognitywizmu i nauk o kulturze
Course content
Pragmatics, Rhetoric, Argumentation
This MA-level course will describe the current state of research in the field of
linguistic pragmatics seen in the broad sense of a functional (i.e. cognitive,
social and cultural) perspective on language and communication. A wide
variety of topics will be discussed and students will acquire both theoretical
and practical expertise within the following areas:
- application of linguistic pragmatics in the analysis of real-life discourse
(language of politics and the media; advertising; social communication;
misunderstandings; humor, etc.)
- status of pragmatics in relation to such disciplines as sociolinguistics,
anthropology, social psychology, experimental psychology, neurolinguistics,
cognitivism and culture studies
- methodology of pragmatic investigation and parameters of analysis (deixis,
presupposition, implicature, speech acts, politeness, relevance)
- implementation of pragmatic awareness in foreign language teaching
Theoretical approaches to the discourse of traditional and new media
entertainment
This seminar is addressed to students whose interests lie in the discourse of
traditional and new media entertainment: films, series and serials (all
representing different genres), diversified television shows, advertising, standup comedy, entertainment websites (e.g. YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter), and
the like. These discourse domains will be discussed from different theoretical
perspectives with reference to a selection of (interdependent) research topics:
the pragmatics of participation; forms and functions of humour (e.g., pictorial
humour, canned jokes, teasing and banter, and conversational humour in its
many forms and guises); irony; metaphor; deception; impoliteness; taboo
words and swearing; and non-verbal communication. The course participants
will be encouraged to carry out novel research projects based on analyses of
data of their choice, in the light of relevant theoretical frameworks suggested
by the supervisor.

Akcenty w badaniu i nauczaniu wymowy języka angielskiego
Akcenty języka angielskiego to fascynujące pole badań dla osób
zainteresowanych zmiennością w mowie, pochodzeniem i rozwojem
odmian języka angielskiego na świecie, ich użyciem i funkcją we
współczesnym
świecie.
Akcent
będzie
tematem
wiodącym
proponowanego seminarium; w czasie zajęć zajmiemy się najpierw
przyczynami, dla których badanie akcentu jest podejmowane oraz
metodami, które można w takich badaniach stosować (semestr 1), a
następnie pracą nad wybranymi projektami (semestr 2 i 3). Celem
seminarium jest pomoc w rozwinięciu wiedzy i umiejętności niezbędnych
do zaplanowania i wykonania projektu magisterskiego poświęconego
badaniu rodzimych lub nie-rodzimych akcentów języka angielskiego, przy
czym projekty te mogą dotyczyć społecznych i/lub pedagogicznych
aspektów wymowy. Dziedziną seminarium jest zatem fonetyka i fonologia
języka angielskiego jako pierwszego / drugiego, zaś główne perspektywy
badawcze to socjo-fonetyka, World Englishes oraz nauczanie i uczenie się
wymowy.
Psycholingwistyka i dydaktyka języka angielskiego jako języka obcego
Seminarium ma na celu wyposażenie uczestników zajęć w wiedzę
teoretyczną i umiejętności praktyczne niezbędne do opracowania w
formie rozprawy magisterskiej tematu metodycznego, wraz z
odpowiednim zapleczem psycholingwistycznym oraz samodzielnie
przeprowadzonym i zanalizowanym projektem badawczym.
Problematyka seminarium magisterskiego o profilu psycholingwistycznym
i metodycznym obejmuje szerokie spektrum teoretycznych i praktycznych
zagadnień językoznawstwa stosowanego i dydaktyki nauczania języka
obcego.
Accents in researching and teaching the pronunciation of English
Accents of English offer a fascinating field of study for those interested in
variability in English speech, the origin and development of varieties of English
around the world, their present-day usage and function. Adopting ‘Accents’ as
a leading theme, this seminar will concentrate on the reasons why accents are
worth studying and the methods for the study (semester 1), providing
guidance in designing and executing an MA project devoted to the
investigation of accents as used by native and/ or non-native speakers of
English (semesters 2 and 3). Topics under investigation include social and
pedagogical aspects of pronunciation research, situating the seminar within
the field of L1 and L2 phonetics and phonology approached from the
perspectives of socio-phonetics, World Englishes and/or pronunciation
teaching and learning.
Język, umysł i kultura
Seminarium przyjmuje założenie, że język stanowi odbicie ludzkiego
systemu pojęciowego. Jego przedmiotem będą podstawowe i
zaawansowane pojęcia językoznawstwa kognitywnego, takie jak metafora,
metonimia, kognitywne schematy wiedzy, kategorie oparte na
prototypach, itd. Zdefiniujemy te pojęcia, a następnie zobaczymy jak one
funkcjonują w tak różnych językach jak angielski, węgierski, niemiecki,
japoński, polski, hiszpański i inne. Będziemy też omawiać sposoby
zastosowania wyżej wspomnianych pojęć w opisie różnych społecznych
odmian języka (slang, żargon, grypsera), przestrzeni, czasu, emocji, a także
w komunikacji niewerbalnej i tekstach literackich. Analizy będą więc
prowadzone z perspektywy wielości i różnorodności kultur i języków.
Language, Mind, and Culture
Relying on the idea that language reflects human conceptual system, the
seminar will focus on basic and advanced concepts of cognitive linguistics, such
as metaphor, metonymy, cognitive scenarios, prototype-based categories, etc.
We will define those concepts and, adopting a cross-cultural and crosslinguistic perspective, look at how they function in languages as diverse as
English, Hungarian, German, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, and others. We will also
discuss the application of cognitive linguistic concepts in the analysis of slangs,
jargons, argots, space, time, emotions, as well as in non-verbal communication
and literary texts.
Psycholinguistics and teaching English as a foreign language
The seminar aims to equip the participants in theoretical knowledge and
practical skills indispensable for compiling an M.A. thesis on a methodological
topic with adequate psycholinguistic background, based on a self-managed
and analysed research project.
The scope of this M.A. seminar, devoted to psycholinguistics and language
teaching methodology, comprises a wide range of theoretical and practical
issues in applied linguistics and language pedagogy

Język wśród innych środków komunikacji
Główne obszary zainteresowań, na jakich będzie się koncentrować
seminarium, to językowe i niewerbalne środki konstruowania skutecznych
i przekonujących komunikatów w szeroko rozumianych dziedzinach języka
mediów (prasa, TV, komunikacja internetowa), reklamy, czy komunikacji
politycznej. Inne możliwe obszary badań to humor językowy, komunikacja
multimodalna, tłumaczenia intersemiotyczne, aspekty stylistyki,
psychologia i socjologia języka. Zapraszam studentów, chcących napisać
pracę w którejś z tych dziedzin, lub zaproponować inne tematy, w
przypadku specjalnych zainteresowań (zwierzęta, muzyka, sztuka,
językowe aspekty literatury, itd.). Seminarium ma orientację
językoznawczą, ale ponieważ język jest używany w komunikacji na każdy
temat, językoznawca ma tu naprawdę szerokie pole do badań. Podstawy
teoretyczne seminarium to

Teorie i paradygmaty przekładu audiowizualnego
Pojęcie przekładu audiowizualnego jest na tym seminarium pojmowane
bardzo szeroko i obejmuje tłumaczenie filmów i audiowizualnych
materiałów reklamowych, udostępnianie treści osobom z niepełnosprawnością wzroku lub słuchu, nadpisy teatralne i operowe, a także
przekład słowa żywego i lokalizację oprogramowania i stron
internetowych.
Podczas zajęć omawiane będą zagadnienia związane z oceną jakości
przekładu, tłumaczeniem humoru i odmian językowych, odbiorem
przekładu audiowizualnego, ograniczeniami przekładowymi, użyciem
więcej niż jednego języka w filmie, kompetencją przekładową itd.
Kognitywne podejście do języka w oparciu o dane empiryczne
w badaniach naukowych i zastosowaniach praktycznych
Seminarium magisterskie poświęcone wskazanej w tytule tematyce ma na
celu przygotowanie uczestników do samodzielnego napisania pracy
magisterskiej, której tematem będzie opracowanie wybranego
zagadnienia z perspektywy językoznawstwa kognitywnego w oparciu o
dane empiryczne pochodzące z wyselekcjonowanych utworów,
samodzielnie zebranych zbiorów tekstu lub korpusów językowych.
Opracowywany temat może mieć charakter ściśle naukowo-badawczy lub
odnosić się do zastosowań praktycznych w przekładzie, nauczaniu języka
obcego lub tworzeniu tekstów użytkowych na potrzeby marketingu i
reklamy.
Language among other modes of communication
The MA seminar will focus on both linguistic and non-verbal means of
constructing effective and persuasive messages in the broadly understood
domains of media language (including newspapers, TV and Internet
communication), advertising, or political communication. Other possible
interests include language play, multimodal communication, intersemiotic
translation, aspects of stylistics, language psychology and sociology. You are
welcome if you would like to write a thesis in any of those areas, or perhaps
propose some other ones, if you have some special interests, such as e.g.
animals, music, art, or linguistic aspects of literature. It is a linguistics seminar,
but since language is used to talk about anything and everything, a linguist can
potentially study any possible topic. As for the theoretical orientation of the
seminar, it will be based on cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, semiotics,
and what may be called general functional linguistics.
Theories and Paradigms of Audiovisual Translation
For the purposes of this seminar, audiovisual translation is understood in the
broadest possible sense and includes film translation, translation for
advertising purposes, accessibility for the vision- and the hearing-impaired,
opera and theatre surtitling, as well as interpreting and website/software
localisation.
Areas to be discussed include translation quality assessment, rendering
humour and language variety, reception of AVT, translational constraints,
multiple languages in films and their translations, strategies of interpreting,
translation and interpreting competence, and many more.
Cognitive linguistic approach to empirical language studies in research and
practical applications
The seminar aims to prepare the participants to write an original MA thesis
that focuses on a selected linguistic problem from a cognitive linguistic
perspective using empirical language data from selected texts, self-compiled
collections of texts, or referential language corpora. The problem in question
can be researched from a purely academic perspective or with reference to
practical applications in translation, foreign language teaching or texts created
for marketing/advertising purposes.

Kobiecy głos. Amerykański feminizm w beletrystyce i tekstach
nieliterackich
Celem kursu jest pogłębienie wiedzy studentów na temat problematyki
feministycznej w kontekście amerykańskim poprzez zapoznanie ich z
tekstami autorstwa kluczowych pisarek pochodzących z USA, z których
wiele było w przeszłości marginalizowanych i pomijanych w
podstawowych programach nauczania literatury i kultury amerykańskiej.
Głównym założeniem seminarium jest jednak zachęcenie studentów do
dyskusji o kwestiach feministycznych i genderowych, mających istotne
znaczenie w stuleciu, które ma szansę stać się “wiekiem kobiet”, i w kraju,
w którym wiele osób ma wciąż problem intelektualny i ideologiczny z
pojęciami takimi jak gender i feminizm. Lista omawianych autorek
obejmuje zatem tak szerokie spektrum nazwisk jak Mina Loy, Betty
Friedan, Sylvia Plath, Gloria Steinem, Erica Jong czy Alice Walker.
Angielskojęzyczna literatura fantastyczna
Seminarium jest generalnie ukierunkowana na literaturę fantastyczną
(fantasy i science fiction) i jej związki z religioznawstwem, literaturą ustną
oraz kulturą średniowiecza. Prace magisterskie mogą dotyczyć wyżej
wspomnianych rodzajów literatury, a także różnych gatunków dawnej
literatury angielskiej (mniej więcej do 1900r), nie wyłączając dramatu, jak
również adaptacji filmowych.

Course content
Literary Plenitudes and Systems of Beliefs: American Literature in Critical
Contexts
The seminar will focus on American prose and poetry. The discussion will
present selected literary works within the frame of the theoretical concept of
“plenitude.” The aim of the class discussions in the first semester will be the
development of topics for the MA dissertation.
The narrower critical term explored by the seminar is “literary plenitude.” By
this term we will understand the capacity of literary works, both prose and
poetry, to present an excess of interpretive possibilities. We will try to identify
the way in which the literary excess put into play by various texts combines,
contextualizes, and puts pressure on various systems of belief espoused by
literary characters or voices.
The reading list will include works by such authors as Hawthorne, Hemingway,
Nabokov, DeLillo, McCarthy, Philip K. Dick – among the prose writers, and
Ashbery, O’Hara, Creeley, Gizzi, Armantrout – among poets. The reading list
provided by the instructor is open to student preferences and suggestions.
A Woman’s Voice: American Feminism in Fiction and Non-fiction
The aim of the course is to deepen the students’ knowledge of feminist issues
in the American context by acquainting them with texts by major American
women writers, many of whom used to be marginalized and excluded from
basic American literature and culture syllabi. The overall intention behind the
seminar is, however, to encourage a discussion of feminist and gender issues,
vital in a century which is likely to become “the Century of Women” and in a
country where many still have a problem, both intellectual and ideological,
with terms such as gender and feminism. The list of authors discussed will thus
include names as seemingly disparate as Mina Loy, Betty Friedan, Sylvia Plath,
Gloria Steinem, Erica Jong or Alice Walker.
A seminar in anglo-phone fantastic literature
The seminar is, generally speaking, focused on fantastic literature (fantasy and
science fiction) and its links with religious studies and medieval culture. The
planned master theses may concern the above mentioned genres, butl also
other genres of early English literature (written, roughly speaking, before 1900)
including drama and film adaptations.

Dramat i adaptacje filmowe literatury
W czasie zajęć będą analizowane wybrane angielskie dramaty
współczesne oraz zagadnienia związane z filmowymi adaptacjami
literatury. Studenci obejrzą wybrane filmy video z zakresu ich
zainteresowań. Będą oni proszeni o przedstawienie prezentacji pisanych
przez siebie prac magisterskich
Drama and film adaptations of literature
During the seminar attention will be focused on analyses of modern dramas
and chosen aspects of film adaptations of literature. Some video versions of
selected plays and novels will be watched and discussed. It is also expected
that the students will submit individual presentations of their work in progress.
Seeing and Reading. The Interaction of Modern Literature, Painting and
Photography
The MA seminar offers an in-depth examination of the relationship between
literature and arts through the study of selected works by a range of modern
writers and artists from Britain, Ireland and the United States. Topics discussed
will include literary responses to paintings and photographs; interactions of
words and images in graphic novels, comic books, and picture books; the use
of narratives in visual arts; the role of titles in paintings; the art of book covers.
Examples of collaboration between writers and artists will be discussed.
Special attention will be given to literary works which combine verbal and
visual elements, presuppose a viewer as well as a reader, and blur the
distinction between writing and painting. We shall also try to answer such
questions as how to read paintings and photographs, can images be
adequately described in words, and what are the limits of verbal and visual
representation.
Encounters with the uncanny in contemporary (British) fiction and film
Sigmund Freud talks about the uncanny (Das Unheimliche) as that which
“belongs to the realm of frightening, of what evokes fear and dread”, which
“was meant to remain secret and hidden and has come into the open”, and
which “derives its terror not from something externally alien or unknown but –
on the contrary – from something strangely familiar which defeats our efforts
to separate ourselves from it”. Literature, which often roams over dark and
perplexing regions of human experience, probes the psychic boundaries of the
self, and struggles to find the representation of identity, is bound to collide
into the uncanny in its explorations. Writers evoke an uncanny response in
their readers by balancing on a frequently thin and indistinct line between the
real and the unreal.
The course proposed, the continuation of the previous semester pro-seminar,
will attempt to examine the phenomenon of the encounter with the uncanny,
using examples selected from contemporary British (and occasionally foreign)
fiction (and occasionally film). The seminar will also look at several crucial
aspects of literary theory and postmodern philosophy relevant to the issue.
