SUMMARY This dissertation has two objectives. One is to investigate which discursive strategies are typically employed in American televised news discourse when informing people about Muslim- and Arabrelated events. The other one is to establish whether there is a connection between the context of a presented news item and the discursive strategy chosen to present it on air. There have been two hypotheses designed to address these objectives. The main hypothesis declares that CNN and Fox News in their news programmes have the same pan-American tendency to portray Muslims and Arabs as terrorists, and by doing so, they contribute to the negative connotations people in the West have about these two social groups. Furthermore, it is hypothesised that any differences in the way Muslim and Arab collective identities are presented in the news broadcasts of the two stations can be explained by the ideological profile of the news providers – whether it is conservative (Fox News), or more liberal (CNN). The analytical approach designed to test these hypotheses draws on the postulates of Teun van Dijk's socio-cognitive view of critical discourse analysis and a quantitative study dedicated to the analysis of the phenomenon of semantic prosody. The study of language in context benefits from using a multi-layered methodological approach that encompasses a qualitative and quantitative perspective due to the fact that discourse usage is complex and changes dynamically. Based on the premise that media discourse has an immense impact on the perception that the receivers have, regarding the wide array of subjects discussed on air, great care was taken to select a narrow, yet specific and comparable sample of news broadcasts from CNN and Fox News. As a result, the gathered data containing information about Muslims and Arabs was obtained from online sources. The discourse of the news broadcasts was studied from the perspective of identity creation of the subjects of the discourse: Muslims and Arabs. In many cases the discussed subjects were assigned an explicit type of identity resulting from their representation in the news. The attributed identities included: Refusers, Drifters, Guardians, Searchers and Resolvers. The analysis conducted in Chapter 5. produced a number of conclusions that relate to the two hypotheses stated in the introduction. The results indicated that there are many similarities in the usage of discursive strategies in Fox News and CNN. The findings of the present dissertation have partially supported the first hypothesis. The discursive (re)presentations of collective identities of Arabs and Muslims were generally negative and contributed to the growth of negative connotations people in the West, specifically the United States of America, have about Muslims and Arabs. The news about Muslims and Arabs is predominantly set in the negative contexts of war, terrorism and socio-political problems which was indicated by the qualitative analysis and supported by most of the outcomes of the quantitative analysis. On the other hand, there is no panAmerican news media narration responsible for portraying Muslims and Arabs. Additionally, the ideological profile of the television station that provides the news is not the only factor that is responsible for the uncovered differences between the approaches of the two broadcasters in the process of discussing and identifying Muslims and Arabs in their reports. As was shown, the ideological profile of a television news broadcaster plays a role only together with the specific context surrounding a presented news item. Hence, the second hypothesis was partially disproved. Finally, the present dissertation revealed a number of intricate correlations between discourse, contextualised identity formation, possible social attitudes and news report narration. Analiza dyskursu programów informacyjnych przeprowadzona została z perspektywy kreowania nowych tożsamości podmiotów owego dyskursu, a więc Muzułmanów i Arabów. Konkludując, niniejsza dysertacja ujawnia wiele zawiłych korelacji pomiędzy dyskursem, rozpatrywanym w szerokim kontekście tworzenia tożsamości, możliwymi postawami społecznymi i narracją programów informacyjnych.
