International media trainings for young NGO activists
Background
Picture this: A group of young people has
started a campaign to raise awareness for
environmental pollution in their hometown.
They approach the local newspaper and mass
media but find out that they cannot promote
their ideas there, because the owner of the
local industrial plant, the main pollutant, is in
control of the established media. What could
they do?
Scenarios such as this one are in the focus of
an international project entitled ‘New Media
as a Catalyst for Civic Engagement’. Four
organisations from Belarus, Germany, Poland
and the Ukraine are joining forces to promote
the huge potential which internet, laptop,
mobile phone & Co. are offering to grassroot
initiatives. In a series of three media trainings
taking place in all three countries, NGO
representatives will be shown how to use the
new media to reach an audience and have an
impact on society. The project will run until
the end of 2010. Thematic contributions will
be made to the internet portal www.tri.net.pl,
bringing together information on project
activities and opportunities to become
involved, as well as practical recommendations for activists.
The media training #1
The first event in Germany will deal with the
issues of generating, editing and publishing
content in audio format, with the possibilities
of the present-day internet (Web 2.0) and
with PR and communication strategies in
general.
The training will be comprised mainly of two
elements: 1) the exchange of ideas and knowhow among the participants and with
external experts, and 2) practical workshops
in which new media and communication
skills can be learned and directly applied with
a hands-on approach, guided by experienced
trainers.
The event will be of a highly interactive
character. Plenty of time and space will be
reserved to discuss issues, either individually
or in the group, and to engage in networking.
The main working language of the training
will be English, but other languages (German,
Polish, Russian etc.) are also possible and will
be translated wherever necessary. The event
will be attended by approximately 20
participants from different countries.
The outcome of the workshops (i.e. audio
features or written content) will be published
on-line at the end of the training and after,
and there will be the possibility to provide
further content to the joint website.
The dates
The event will begin in the evening of
20 March 2010 (Saturday) and end in the
morning of 27 March 2010 (Saturday).
The other two separate events will take place
on 12-19 June 2010 in Elbląg (Poland) and on
25 September – 2 October 2010 in Lugansk
(Ukraine).
