Stary Sącz is a small Polish town in a picturesque part of the Carpathian Mountains called Beskid Sądecki. It has a unique climate created by fully preserved, historic urban structure and numerous valuable buildings. For this reason the town is referred to as the “Mediaeval Pearl of the Beskid”. In 2007, Stary Sącz celebrated its 750 anniversary. INVITATION Mr. Mrs. We have the honour to invite you to Stary Sącz for a two week creative visit – a meeting of painters, from 16th to 31st July, 2014 IX INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF PAINTERS SYMPOSIUM OF LOCAL CULTURES STARY SĄCZ 2014 Jacek Lelek Marian Nowiński Mayor of Stary Sącz Commissioner, Art About culture What does the local culture, folk or regional culture mean for us, the artists? What cultural environment do we live in? What elements of local culture do we remember from our childhood? Has the local culture affected our present lives, our creativeness? Do the products of the regional, folk culture of the past influence us today? Have the values of local culture we had met left their trace inside each of us? Please send a short text in English, reflecting your own opinion on: “What is or what was the folk, local culture of the region where you live”. The text should not be longer than 7 sentences. It will be published in the catalogue of works. We ask you also to provide us a photograph of an object typical for your local culture. This cannot be the portrait of the artist. The reproduction will illustrate and complete your text. If possible, please take this piece of your local culture with you to Stary Sącz. We will show it in the final exhibition. Exhibition In the final exhibition of our meeting, besides the works which will be painted in Stary Sącz, we will present the pieces of local culture which you will bring with you, and your texts about culture. We intend to provoke a discussion between the artists and the visitors on the real meaning of local culture for us. We plan to record and write down the statements. Participants Artists from i.a. Italy, Germany, Portugal, Japan, China, Russia, Belarus and Poland. We provide for the participants of the workshop Accommodation and maintenance free of charge during the workshop Publication of the catalogue of works Visits in Stary Sącz and its surroundings Meetings with local inhabitants and regional artists Varnishing parties and exhibitions during the workshop Stretchers, paper and sketchbooks We expect from the artists Financing of their own travel to and from Stary Sącz Bringing basic painting materials (brushes, paints, etc) with them Donating the organisers, at the end of the meeting, with at least two works painted by each of the artists in Stary Sącz In addition, we expect you to send us as quickly as possible (not later than 15th May 2014) the materials which are necessary to prepare the catalogue: 1. Brief artistic CV (maximum 5 sentences, or 400 signs, in English); 2. Minimum three (or more) reproductions of your own works to be included in the catalogue (on a CD, format: TIF, JPG or PDF, quality sufficient to print A4 size, minimum 300 dpi); 3. Photograph of an object typical for the region where you live (format similar to that of your reproductions of works) 4. A brief text – your personal statement on regional culture, “What is or what was the folk, local culture of the region where you live” (in English, no more than 9 sentences, or 600 signs).
